H. brevialata-H. heuschkeliana

Do the leaves of these two differ much? Neither of my plants seem to have very thickened leaves, but H. heuschkeliana is supposed to be leathery and 'succulent'. I have not seen flowers yet of either.

P. Clark (1996) published a list of Hoya cultivars; does anyone have a copy? Yale

They are similar, but brevialata's have a more pronounced curve or "cupped" shape to them, and I heuschkeliana's leaves get bigger in size - well, length-wise anyway! And that can depend on enviroment.

I don't think they are so similar that you wouldn't be able to tell them apart, though.

I have only a cutting of heuschkeliana, but here's the differences I observe:

Heuschkeliana has more pointed leaves, whereas brevialata are oval

Brevialata's color is a little lighter green

Heuschkeliana's leaves seem **almost** leathery, but not as much so as DS-70 (tsangii) whereas brevialata's are more smooth

I've gotten only one flower so far on my brevialata...

From what I read, heuschkeliana can have either pink or yellow flowers.

It's frustrating at times trying to find the right ID for these plants! Hoyas and Haworthias - I'm constantly changing the names these two groups of plants!! Anyway, at a particular vendor that this site will not allow me to mention (what kind of BS is that??), they say (under brevialata): "Hoya brevialata is often confused for H. incurvula." I tried to put a link below to the page to show you, but it won't let me do that either. I can't, for the life of me, tell the difference myself! I wish they had leaf length/width or other details. It only says about incurvula: "Small rounded leaves, very recurved margins which almost fold." I think my leaves look more like the closeup of the incurvula pic, but the manner of growth looks more like the pic of brevialata. Anyone wanting a link to the site can contact me personally. I enjoy the glimpse of the cat and the dog in one of your outdoor hoya shots : ) I decided to try to walk to Lowes today, and it turns out to be quite doable (as in, not as pedestrian unfriendly as I thought it would be). I got my very first ever EA hoya, a nice basket of brevialata. It wasn't mislabeled, because it wasn't labeled at all, ha! But I already have a small cutting of brevialata, that hasn't really decided whether or not it wants to grow, so it is nice to have a second one that is ahead of it. I also picked up a lovely little philodendron scandens micans, a clearance ceramic orchid pot, and some rather nice trellises that surprisingly weren't expensive at all. Oh, and some hanging hardware, and plastic coated wire so I can make hoop trellises. I did kind of look like a bag lady walking home though, because I also stopped by the grocery store, and Target... an old guy sitting on his front step asked me if I wanted to buy a car : P Now I can make good progress on my Hoya projects. I've already re-trellised both sp. Tanna Island and finlaysonii... woo hoo! I love your pics of your datura, Tigerdawn. I am a night person, but I don't actually go out into my yard at night much (avoiding mosquitoes) so I feel your pain!

Okay John,i'm gonna hold you to that!!!!! Mike, I believe there is only the pink flowering form of the variegatd heuschkeliana so far. The Australian seller has it listed on Ebay all the time and the flowers are always pink. I have a plant of H. flagelatta that produced a vine with some variegated leaves on it. I am watching it to see what happens!!! I also have a large plant of H. kerrii albomarginata threw out not one but two vines with unusual leaves on them. This took place a few years back and I think I may have mentioned it before on this forum but don't remember. One of the two vines has a mix of solid yellow leaves and then some are green and yellow ( more yellow though) the second vine has nothing but solid yellow leaves. I have left these vines attached to the mother plant because I am scared if I remove them they may die. I know with hoyas like the carnosas if you get a white or pink vine they almost always die off. Neither of these vines has produced any flowers yet either but the rest of the plant blooms like crazy. Maybe i'll get up the nerve one day to at least take a cutting from the solid yellow vine and see if it'll root and continue to grow producing all yellow leaves. david

Thanks for the help. H. brevialata seems to fit your descriptions with leaves distinctly arched and cup like. H. heuschkeliana is flatter and the tip more acute, but the leaves of both are rich green in color and similar in length/width. Neither seems succulent to me, but are somewhat stiff. Each is grown from a cutting and doing quite well at this time. Will hope for flowers. Yale

My heuschkeliana leaves are very curved. I wonder if it could be brevialata instead.... Today I looked at it and it seems as if it has buds forming!
