Got My 'Golden Meadows' From Hosta Patch Today

OK, I can finally see it with my own eyes. Nice, single-eye, good roots, looks to be a healthy little plant. Was happy with this item from Hosta Patch.

I ordered two plants from Hosta Patch, and the second one was 'Lakeside Roy El'. Was a 'Super Size' as they call it. Cost 15 bucks, and is a good-sized plant with 10 eyes and some very healthy-looking early growth on it. What I was not happy with is they obviously cut the roots way back before they shipped it. I'm not really angry about it, but WHY?? That's rookie cr*p. They cut a lot of it off. Maybe it was a new guy. I hope they don't do this with all their 'Super Size' plants. Now it has 'Under Size' roots. LOL Oh well, live and learn.

Don,for what it's worth,those are good roots on your Lakeside Roy El! Maybe a little short,but plenty thick,and should take off and grow really well! The other plant has a head start,with leaves already. Just get them in some dirt,as soon as you can. Phil

Deanna, that is where I got mine too. My eyes almost bugged out when I casually dropped by the auction just to look, and after all the furor over Golden Meadow, there it was. I held my breath until the auction closed that somehow I'd lose it. I noticed this morning that the middle white is quickly turning to a sort of fresh green, although the pattern is still visible. No way could I describe this plant except with "indescribably beautiful." The plant markers I ordered came, and I used the 15 inch tall spikes. Well, I see they will be too short for some, including this one. So I order more 20 inch spikes. Really, I hesitate to tally how much of my allowance has gone into hosta alone, not including other plants and garden materials. It does keep me out of trouble, and keeps my mind off remodelling the kitchen--much to my DH's delight.

Melissa- After reading your post, I immediately jumped in my car and flew to Gertens - and I live in Wisconsin. 'Empress Wu' is at the top of my wish list. However, when I got there she was priced at $39 (yikes!! - lol) That is a little rich for my blood, so I settled for a huge 'Big Daddy' ($9), four 'Mona Lisa' lilies (in one pot), two hakone grass, 3 Ajuga reptans, 'Burgundy Glow', a HUGE Datura and some Creeping Jenny. I had a $10 gift card so I got the whole thing for $49.00 I felt a little better getting so much more for the money. I guess I am just cheap/frugal (lol). 'Empress Wu' will have to wait. Gerten's, by the way, has more than quadtrupled their hosta inventory and had quite a few new varieties. Thanks for the heads up, Melissa.

Yeah - pretty sure it's only one eye. It's wrapped around itself actually, which is kind of weird in itself. I bought it from a local Hosta grower I went to a few weeks ago. I'm telling myself for now that they're just immature and I wouldn't even start to look to see if it's a sport until I have more than 3 leaves. I guess I'll just watch and wait. It just looks like everyone else's come up looking like GM, not like mine (don't get me wrong, it's pretty!!!) I'll try and get another picture tonight, or maybe tomorrow. The weird thing is that it looks like the GM leaves kind of rotted off (stems were kind of mushy where they came off) so maybe it's just gone back to a really immature version because of something that happened when they potted it up...I dunno. It's in my nursery bed with a few others so we'll see how it does.....I'm just totally confused.

Oh wow, Naylor started my week out with a shipment arriving on Monday, send a second which arrived Thursday I think, because other arrivals were from Hornbaker and Mason Hollow. Then today, not to be outdone, two big boxes arrived from Chris at Hallsons. My cup runneth over. I apologize for any typos here. I ate a cPhilly chease steak sandwich with a big red jalapeno on the side, and forgot about the pepper on my hand. I am typing with my eyes closed and tearing out of my right eye. This is after a good bit of eye drops.... It poured again today, just finished actually, and I cannot deal with the potting up issues today. Maybe in the morning early early. It is beautiful in the morning. I have enough new pots in my SUV to do them all up and place in the shade spots.

OH boy! Speaking of getting the roots into dirt....I have 12 or so hosta just arrived late yesterday from Green Mt. that need potting. It will be around the time the rains begin (promised for 3 days) that I shall have the chance to pot em up. Under an umbrella, you reckon? :)

Indeed, Phil, it's doing just fine and unfurling already. I thought it'd be OK, that's why I wasn't angry about it....It's a big pet peeve with me. Cutting back roots is just d-u-m-b!
