Seedlings 2nd year

Here's a some of my 2011 seedlings (all open pollinated) that got a head start in my porch.

Spring Fling Seedling - definitely has leaf shape

On Stage Seedling - about 1/2 from On Stage were yellow, looking to do some culling of these this year.

Northern Exposure Seedlings - planted a couple of similar seedlings to the garden last summer

Northern Exposure Seedlings part 2

Northern Exposure Seedlings part 3 - have some solids also with big very round leaves

2011 Maui BC Seedling - nice yellow, no cupping so far

2011 Maui BC Seedling - a couple had cupping and some blue last year, hoping blue is a bit more this year

2011 Golden Sculpture Seedling - has a very textured feel

2011 Christmas Tree Gala Seedling - was distorted last year and happy to see it continued - very interesting. Have a couple of streaked from CTG as well.

Assorted Seedlings- Onstage, Niagara Falls (green blue), Abba Dabba Do - Kept most of the yellows, will see how they do this year

2009 Zounds Seedling - went to sleep in 2009 with a patch of center color and woke up last year much different - very slow so far.

Those are some fantastic seedlings. Looks like you have some definite keepers to hopefully put on the market.

A few to add Dancing Stars, a sport of Dancing in the Rain - 1st year Daybreak - its two neighboring hosta were moved so hopefully Daybreak starts to stretch out a bit, keeps yellow pretty well for me Delta Dawn, has some Breeder's Choice and Aztec Treasure in it - 3rd year, last summer it started to look stronger, love the colors Devon Green, a Halcyon sport - third year, nice green, veins attractive Diana Remembered, a sport of Seventh Heaven - third year Diva, an Elatior seedling - 2nd year, can't wait for this to fillout Paul

Oh, Steve you are right. This one's not mine. It's at the Dallas Arboretum. This is after 50 something days of 100+ temps, two hail storms and no rain for months (irrigated of course). I'm impressed. I bought one last fall. bkay (I just can't spell Victory)

Steve, All three of my OBL's look alike. Probably because they were bought from the same local nursery. They are young and have been transplanted every year. The pic above was a late summer view of one in a sunny location. They are in more shade now and are not moving any more. Hopefully, they will look more like Francis Williams this season. My FW is beautiful. Maybe my OBL's were just mismarked!

Phil, 1 or 2 - 4in pots of Sweet Woodruff can go a long ways. All this is from 1 pot that was divided in 4 and then divided a couple of times in next couple of years. I try to keep a patch or two of ground covers going in each garden area - ginger, ajuga, vinca, lamiums, hardy geraniums, etc. If you were close I'd drop some SW off. bkay, saw your Chihuly pics very neat. Ken, I'll keep an eye on them.....glad the 'how to' is useful. Paul

The one you call Northern Exposure seedling in interesting,in that NE is marginally variegated,unless maybe I'm reading that wrong? Phil

Thanks Gesila and Cher - no illusions of something that will have market appeal, but it would be nice in 5 years to have something unique to my gardens to share with hosta friends.

Phil, most of these NE seedlings came up misted last year. That first seedling seems to be settling out quickly to a green edge. I have a 2010 NE Seedling that last year appeared to be settling to an edge variegation - part of the fun of seedlings (and a box of chocolates- Forrest Gump).

You can send a piece of that Christmas Gala seedling to me when it gets bigger. Wow. Don_r will really like that one. I also really like that Golden Sculpture seedling. That leaf twist is beautiful. Great work, Paul.

How many did you say you culled to this point? The ones you picture are inspirational. Open pollenation keeps a bit of gambling and more fun. Or, que sera....and then the gamble is recognizing which ones to hang on to. You seem to have a good eye for it.

They say Hudson Bay is better than Northern Exposure, would it be worth trying for open pollenation? Or is it not fertile?

I'm surprised Northern Exposure produced any sort of variegation since it's not a streaked hosta. May have to plant a few seeds next year.

Thanks Steve - I'm hoping the CTG seedling doesn't loose too much of the irregularity or leaves tearing as it gets more mature. I think 1 more year in a pot and then to garden in summer 2013. The Golden Sculpture seedling's grainy leaf texture doesn't show in pic well, but very different and decent substance - 1st leaves as seedlings were noticeable. Already a couple of divisions, so growing well.

moccasinlanding - Out of the original trays (20+ diff hosta moms) initially I would keep about 6-12 seedlings from each - a few I kept a bit more like the yellows from On Stage - since I figured quite a few would have thin substance and peter out. Hardest to toss are those that were growing so strongly. Since trays had 100 or more seedlings - a lot of culls. Towards end of summer I did a second cull - setting all of same mom seedlings together and tried to be ruthless - lol, maybe got down to 200+ with a few reprieves planted directly in garden to fend for themselves. I had a couple of trays of rejects that were really growing strong and looked similar (same mom) - so they were pardoned in mass - figured mother nature could sort out the weak - In a few years, I could have a few very interesting clumps that look very similar but yet have a few different shaped leaves.

Still way too many greens(kept a few of everything) left and will need to cull at least 1/2 of these by end of summer - hoping for waviness and blues to develop. So maybe I get down to 75 at end of summer.

Regarding Hudson Bay, getting streaked/misted seedlings from a Northern Exposure is such a bonus, especially 2 yrs in a row - besides at this point I'm doing this for fun and to keep from going hosta deprived in the winter months.
