make hoyas fuller

how do i make my hoyas fuller? do i cut the very long stems back to make the get bushier and fuller? the soil in the 8-10 inch pots that i planted the cuttings in last year seems to be very dried out even to the point of being almost like a powder. should i replace the soil and should i put into a smaller pot. the do not seem to be thriving at all. thanks

In terms of making your hoyas fuller, it depends on the hoya. Some branch out when you cut the stems back, but I would say that most don't. The best way to make them fuller is to take cuttings and put them back into the pot (in order to root, you need to stick at least one node in the pot).

8-10 inch pots sound pretty big for hoyas. But that also depends on how big they are. Most of my hoyas are in 3-4 inch pots, and my biggest ones are in 6-8 inch pots. Hoyas like to be rootbound.

If the plants are not thriving and the soil is very dried out, it's time to repot. It might have been a very peaty soil. When you repot, downsize to a pot that will keep the roots snug. Also, use a fast draining soil since most hoyas don't like wet feet. I use a mixture of regular potting soil, perlite, and fir bark (or any kind of bark-type chips, like coconut chips). I use about a 1-1-1 ratio. I sometimes just use 50% soil and 50% perlite. Anyway, I won't get too into soil mixtures, because that discussion can go on and on! Just use something loose.

thanks gabi, i can use all the help i can get on this house plant thing. love them but was never very good with them. would love to have them all over the house inside. will try again and see. thanks again

I have just transplanted two of these plants. They are already sending long runners onto the support. Can I pinch out the top of each runner to cause side shoots to develope. I've never even seen one of these vines in person so don't know if more side shoots develope off the leaf nodes of each runner automatically or if each runner simply continues to grow in length. Just because someone enjoys a drink doesn't make them an alcoholic, but alcoholism is complex. Not all alcoholics hide their drinking, some, like my ex, just don't care. His job wasn't impacted because he owned the business. He didn't drive around, so he didn't get arrested. I took care of the kids so that wasn't an issue. He bought a shirt that said "I'm not an alcoholic, alcoholics attend meetings. I'm a drunk." My ex still drinks every day but now he owns a health food store, so he will "sneak" a drink or two in the afternoon, and then he drinks all evening. My Mother drinks a glass of red wine in the evening and it takes her about 3 hours to drink it. She doesn't NEED it and doesn't get annoyed if she doesn't have it, but she likes it and there's always a bottle of Paul Newman wine in her house because she's an 83 year old fan-girl, LOL. My Dad said nothing tasted better than a cold beer when it was really hot outside. My son in law goes out for a drink with the guys after work once a week but never drinks at home. There are different "types" of drinkers just as there are different types of alcoholics. It's something about all people being different. I don't think that Sooz was being particularly insulting or judgmental, just that she thought the excitement was a little over done. Since the Food Network is made up of people who aren't actors, I'm guessing that they are told to convey a certain "persona" and some of them just aren't very good at it. I've always thought that "reality television" isn't real and it's just a way to entertain us without having to hire real actors. What else could explain the Kardashians, Honey BooBoo or Duck Dynasty? Let pups make fuller plant?

Yes and no. Just like Agave the Sans will die (stop growing). Just takes several years to do so. Any cut leaf will continue to root and make a new plant (unlike Agave). Just like the Agave, the Sans will make new pups from dying main. Must need to note not all Sans will develop a flower stock. Most if not all hahnii will not flower and most futura does not flower. My Asahi which I had over 10 years has never produced a flower and continues to stack. It has more leaves than you can count. If no mishap happens to hahnii, they will stack to the ceiling. I saw one common hahnii which was over 4 feet tall with thousands of leaves. Wish I had taken a picture of it. There is one Sans which produce a flower stock from the roots so in this case, no main stock needs to stop it's growing cycle.

I agree with Gabi. Also - if you cut them back and they DO branch out, then you have won both ways!

If the soil is very sandy it's likely to have lost all its nutrition, I would definitely pot them in new soil/perlite mixture in a suitably -sized pot.

On some hoyas (polyneura and cummingiana), I find pinching the tips forces new branches to form from the side at lower nodes. This will keep the tip from continuing to grow (sometimes), so you should have a bushier/compact plant.
