I mean that is a LOT of data to be input. It is a world class site.

Leafwatcher, it is a good idea IMHO, to see the updates. A good idea for the viewers, don't know how a site manager would work that option into the format.

Bob provides an invaluable service to all us hostaholics with the work he has done and continues to do on the Hosta Library. I'll bet each and everyone of us use it at least once a week, if not once a day.

A ran across a useful bit of coding done a number of years ago by Hugo Philips that allows you to view the images in the HL of 2 different cultivars side-by-side. I expanded that list last year and have made it available for use through my website, HERE.. I did the last update in February 2012 and it's about time to go through the time consuming process again to compare the list I have with what is currently posted by Bob in the HL. It'll take a bit of time, but I'll gitter dun....

Don, my "Twisting The Night Away" is coming along. I have lost a few of the initial divisions -most notably the one that lead to the name in the first place- but have enough left to keep it going and growing. I'll be committing a couple of them to a garden bed before too long, I want them to grow as big as they can to get a better idea of garden worthiness.

I have begun the work of updating the comparison list, it's a slow, pedantic process as I have to compare each of Bob's page info to what I have in my list... there now are 5833 entries and the number has grown. I'll advise once the work is done.

Pietre, are you using that split screen setup to compare hosta? I had the link to that and then lost it. Do not know how to describe it to do a search, and it took the Hosta Library pictures and let you enter one hosta on one side, and then name another for the other side of the window, and scroll to it. I enjoyed using that, and now I cannot find it.

EDIT: I reread the thread, and discovered that you linked to this in a post above which I missed reading. Thanks for the link, I figured you knew what it would be. :)

And I just used the HL Comparison side by side which is actually hosted at the website of the creator of this thread. He so modestly gave the link in his post above too.

What I did in a search there could be imagined before but not so easily compared side by side. I'd wondered how White Elephant and Eskimo Pie would compare--close enough ? WE to replace EP? .... I have a healthy WP---a gasping EP with two tiny leaves to show for it in THREE YEARS.

Other than not wanting to give up on EP since it apparently wants to live.......I'd say ........replacing it in the lineup is a good move......and White Elephant is a good substitute. Not exact, but "close enough for gummint work."

So you see, the Comparison Tool has a practical application. If someone like DonB is trying to balance the look of a new flower bed---make some specific choices---well, I recommend he take this tool and find his solution. Because the Comparison Tool also lets you see how two particular hosta will look "side by side" (in your garden next time)....

...For each hosta you--or SOMEBODY!-- chose what photo characteristized it among all the photos submitted to the Hosta Library. That photo shows up when we play Comparison Tool. You also had to know what a good'un looks like. And who knows what else to make this tool work.

It's been updated! The latest version of the comparison tool now lists 5980 varieties of species and cultivars found in the Hosta Library.
