starting a hoya from a clipping

I have read a few posts about this but mine is a little different. . . I have always wanted to try growing a hoya but rarely see them for sale . . . I finally saw one at Walmart but the price was $20.00 and not knowing if I would be able to grow it or not didn't want to spend the money to experiment. . . so I took a slip from the plant and stuck it in my bottle of water. When I got home I stuck it in a small pot with a Christmas cactus as the groing directions were the same. I don't see any new growth (it's been about 3 months) but when I tug on the stem it seems to be stuck in there pretty good. I was wondering if I put it in it's own pot if it would do better and I could see if there are actually roots there, or should I leave it alone for a while longer? It hasn't lost any leaves or changed in appearance at all so I think it is OK. Did I do the wrong thing by sneaking a slip instead of just buying the plant?
