Spring is only a few weeks away.

Any lurkers out there? I have my favorite sites I go to, But I'd really like to talk to some one closer.

Just tell me you're here. OK? I don't care if you're a lurker like me. Just say "Hi" just a "hi" won't hurt.

Hello, I live in the lower hudson valley. I don't spend much time on this particular forum (mostly on the tomato forum). The real reason I never post much here is that the forum is kind of dead but if people are here I'll stick around.

I live in orange county.
I'm usually on the winter sowers forum. This thread is pretty dead.lol. I grow tomatoes too but last year we got that stupid blyte I grew from seed and still got it. I've been gardening for 15+ years but mostly flowers.

Opps! I mispelled my title and must have forgotten to hit submit when I tried to answer this before. LOL! Anyway, thanks for the growing tip. I don't have the lights right now to keep them growing but I was glad to hear that the lights would work because I will add them when we get some other lighting done. I was wondering if I could just store my plants in the garage for the winter. Some of my begonias planted in the yard last year came back (I am in NC) so I was thinking if the plants in the pots were sheltered a bit better, they might survive. Anyone know or want to make a guess? Thanks all.

Jstropic, my DH used 1/2" conduit(sp?)Pipe and PVC for sprinklers that we bought at H.Depot, and cut it with a hacksaw. I cleared all the mulch off during the day to catch as much sun on the soil, I wrapped the lights on the highest part of the trunk, and laid the rest of the Xmas lights on the ground, covered it up around 5-6 pm and turned the lights on around 7 pm and didn't turn it off till the outside temps got above 40 degrees. I was also lucky enough to get some of these plastic Xmas light stakes that were clearanced at Wmart, that I used to tack down the frost cloth, since it was windy that night. Main thing was to keep the heat from the lights inside. Make sure the cover goes all the way to the ground to retain the heat. I ordered my frost cloth online, since the stores here only carried the very light weight ones. I bought the medium grade, I think it is 1.5 Oz. It came in 12'x50', you can cut to size. I'm sure there are others out there that are just as good, and come in different sizes. You are lucky though since you are in zone 10, you should be a little warmer than me. I live 2 hours south of Orlando. It is a lot of work, but for me I love Mangos and lychees, so I really wanted these trees to survive so it was well worth the extra work...

I recently bought that Phlomis; it's struggling a bit right now. The seeds for Hedeoma and that Stachys [great picture!) are on my current want list from Southwestern Native Seeds. I do have Stachys a. Hidalgo, which is a nice plant with coral colored flowers. Currently what I wish there were more of in the trade are Cupheas. The only resemblance to Salvias is that they are loved by hummingbirds. Strybing told me that they will soon be offering many varieties; they didn't put them out for the winter sale, but I saw them blooming in the park.

Hi! I'm reading, such as it is ;)
Just to keep this on the gardening topic, I was shocked to see that the seedlings I had starting under lights in the basement actually LIVED through 5 days without power. Woo! You go, little strong seedlings!
I also grow tomatoes, but *blush* I have always bought starts of heirlooms from Burpee. This year is my first attempt at any tomatoes from seed--I have two little green zebra seedlings that look nice and healthy at the moment.
I also just discovered winter sowing, so you might see me around there too!

I have always lurked this forum and was enthusiastic when it got started. I guess the folks who campaigned to get it started had departed by the time it was up and running? I'd try to help a revive if others join in.

I am new to the forum thing but I love gardening! A friend gave me the gardening bug about 3 years ago; now IÂm hooked!

About 12 days ago I was surfing the net and found someone talking about winter sowing. I asked myself, "What is this winter sowing?" My searches lead me to wintersown.org and the gardenweb.com. I am happy that there are people in my area who are willing to share their knowledge and experiences. I look forward to helping breath new life into the HV Forum.

By the way, in the past 10 days I have WS 52 containers at my house, 34 at a friendÂs house and 7 at school with my student. I will sow more as soon as they bring in the milk containers. IÂm hooked.

I'm in Newburgh!
I have a yahoo group that I started in order to share garden excess...like a freecycle thing. Most summers, I have zucchini coming out of my ears. IF you're interested - it's called HVFC-group I'd post the link, but somebody seems to think it's a spam/business link.

I just finished rebuilding my chicken coop, and will plant next week
