How to keep squirrels from digging up the bulbs?
Comments (44)Tried it, both liquid and the granule stuff. The squirrels/ rabbits were like, "Thank you for the seasoning" and went ahead and ate the stuff anyway. Or they waited for the next rainstorm or after I watered. Whatever the case it didn't work, even after a day of use. I also used cinnamon, both powdered and oil form. That helped with some success. At least until either it rained or the stuff wore off. But being too expensive to apply on a regular basis, didn't help. (But I'll add specifically for this topic, the powdered form of cinnamon did not do anything for bulb planting.) But so far the trick I did mixing like thai hot pepper garlic + Habanero seeds + neem oil and rubbing on/ soaking on approx.. 41 daffodil bulbs seems to be helping. I left one half rotted bulb out with said treatment just to allow them to try one. That one was tried and shredded, but very few others have been dug up since then. But it remains to be seen if it will work in the long run....See Morekeeping cats from digging in mulch?
Comments (10)Thanks, Mammie. I think I'll see if I can find some pine cones to put around. I also read that pieces of chicken wire laid over the beds might work, as well as using inexpensive bamboo skewers broken in half and inserted in mulch with the points sticking up a couple of inches. I don't think that would injure them, just keep them from digging in the mulch. I like cats but I wish their owners kept them indoors. I know they are natural predators, but don't like them hunting wild birds. I also don't like coming across their poop in my garden beds! Comments (14)I realize this is 6 years later in this thread, but maybe someone else will answer. I have a squirrel problem (digging in my pots) and am just afraid to pot hot pepper flakes. Won't that burn the plants?? I have citrus trees in pots, among other things. Just worried when I start watering them and the flakes go into the soil if it'll damage the roots....See Moresquirrels digging holes!
Comments (6)sprstguy76- Last summer when it got hot and dry around late June, early July, the squirrels began using my ripening tomatoes as a source of liquid refreshment. Purely by accident, I noticed that after I sprayed my tomatoes with Garden Safe brand insecticide/fungicide available at Walmart(contains extract of neem oil that I understand is organic/safe), the slaughter seemed to stop. Now to be honest I'm not sure they stopped because of my spraying(neem oil smells and while I haven't personally licked any myself, I'm willing to bet it tastes bitter) or it just started raining enough to satisfy their thirst elsewhere. This year has been extremely dry, but my tomatoes haven't ripened yet, so I don't know for two years in a row for sure whether it works or not, but if you need an insecticide/fungicide that I can for sure recommend for dealing effectively with aphids, you may want to try it on your squirrels. Good luck... Tom D....See Moremarquest
