I'd love to have them interspersed in the hostas.

Thanks Melissa. I hope they don't become invasive. I've got more purple violets than I want, but they are easy to pull out of the ground -very shallow roots. And I have to admit, I love the sea of purple in the spring when the grass is still brown and the hostas are not peeking up yet! I read somewhere that VBB naturalize readily in Minnesota.

I have a Virginia Bluebells plant in my woodland garden,and it hasn't done anything,in all the years that its been there! Every year it comes up with a few pathetic leaves,and that's it. Next question,why would you pull out purple violets? I have them all over my woodland garden,and they just accent the hosta. Besides,they are free! This year,I have zillions of Trilliums,coming up,and I just let them grow right where they come up,and just build my gardens around them. A beautiful plant,and God gives us them for nothing! Just my two cents worth! Phil

VBB is native to MN, but I don't think it's on the invasive species list.
I think even if they did take over, I'd leave 'em, so long as they don't choke out the hostas. Gotta love a ground cover!

I don't pull many out Phil. But sometimes they get so thick I can't see my hostas! The ones I pull out get put in the mulch around the few trees I have. I also put them along my driveway edge and edge of the street where the grass does not seem to want to grow.

Nope - not invasive. Neat plants.

I've had some in back for many years, collected from a woodland. The clump enlarged very slowly, and the last couple of years I've found several more around, mostly within about 6 feet - seedlings, I'm sure. Easy to control by weeding or moving or thinning. Like pulmonaria, they have both pink and blue depending on the age of each blossom.

I have lots of them Teresa,but my hostas are a lot taller than them,so the hosta cover most of them. We have two types here in western NC. The first ones to come up are more vigorous,and they have light blue flowers. They have finished flowering now,but the little purple ones are just now flowering,and they are scattered all over the place. Phil

Phil - the ones in the grass don't get very tall - maybe 5-6". But the ones that have made there way into the beds get 10-12" tall. Must be the Osmocote and all the water!

I got my start of VBB's from my son and in looking for clumps to dig I found white flowers in 2 clumps so took those too. Now I have both growing in my garden. I just pull them out if they crowd my hosta.

teresa - VBB will go dormant around June. I would enjoy it and mark location. I picked up some last year at a garden club sale - it is stronger looking this year not much wider. Waiting to see if it follows sleep, creep, leap pattern for next year.
