Where is Hosta 'Second Coming' ?

I was looking for something else, like Second Wind, and ran across Second Coming in Hosta Library. Then I remembered that it is on Don Rawson's Fragrant Flowered Hosta list.

From there I checked Myhostas.be website, and it says Second Coming is a sport of Honeybells. Not registered.

No listing of availability in the Hosta Finder for 2013. So. Is this one which is not ready for prime time? Is it one which is now in TC?

I am intrigued by its green leaf with white veins. Look at the picture in Hosta Library and tell me if you find it unique. Sort of like a reverse White Wall Tires, huh, which has white leaf with green veins turning more green as the season passes.

It is unique, and it is fragrant. What more could I want!!

Oh my that is one unique hosta! Not difficult to pick it out at 10 feet, 20 feet, next door.....

As far as I know it is in two gardens. Gary Bennett of Hanover, MA has the original clump in his garden, he discovered this sport. Rick Goodenough has a piece that was in a pot the last I saw it. There may be a few other pieces in private gardens, but these are the only two I'm aware of. Here's the original clump.

I don't believe this is scheduled for TC. I don't think it TC's well.

Ive never seen one in a retail nusery here, KOs our king at the retail box stores, even local nuseries who know better, dont sell anything else, I talk to one or two nusery I know, and its basically.. its the only thing people ask for to buy, so he sells them. Drives me nuts, literally, instead of educating the public on what works, they just give in.. Im not really anti KO, im more pro.. what works where you live. KOs on the whole are only slightly hardier then a hybrid tea here, there is a business that has like 40 planted, every spring I drive by and half of them are dead, they just replant them every year. .. BTW I WISH nuseries would stock ramblin red, a much hardier and nice northern rose that should be more available to the public. There is not such thing as one plant for all the country.. I wish they would stop selling junk advertisement like that, its like in the old days when they sold CURE alls and people believed it. Oh well..

In St. Louis the snow melted weeks ago. For the last two weeks, the weather has been in the 50's sometimes the 60's. My daffodils and crocuses are halfway out of the dirt but no hostas. I went to work this morning and looked in their landscaping where they have about 10 planted hostas and nothing is showing there either. I guess I'm very anxious due to last year being my first time working in yard and I planted around 12-15 hostas and I want to see what some up.

Your guess is the same as mine... a little seedling... frankly, if you are growing hostas and not getting volunteers, it is probably because you are a good weeder and/or use preen. Not all hostas will set seed, and not all seed is fertile, but lots of varieties are very fertile. S&S, for example, is a very good breeder. If you move it, you'll know the answer. A young seedling will probably have no identifiable crown and about two major roots heading out as much horizontal as vertical. If it is a piece of an older crown, you'd likely find a little chunk of crown at the base of the eye. As far as care goes... hosta seedlings behave pretty much like anything else you start from seed. They like moist soil, plenty of water - but they want good drainage so they don't rot. They like bright shade, especially a yellow one. Enjoy your baby - and leave some areas unweeded or watch for teeny teeny teeny hosta leaves when you weed. The emerging seedling will often have one leaf that looks like its stem is under the earth and half or two-thirds of the leaf sticking out - and the leaf will be perfectly hosta leaf shaped - except tiny tiny tiny tiny version of a miniature. Better yet - collect some seed and plant it like you would carrots next spring. If you are excited about your first little yellow seedling, I can only imagine how you'll respond to a row of mixed yellow, green, and blue seedlings. You don't even have to collect seed from a lot of plants as the seed from even one plant may very well give you babies in all colors and sizes... Better yet - find somebody who started seeds this winter and can't bring themselves to commit hostacide - lots of seed starters end up with hundreds, maybe thousands, more seedlings than they can keep. Anybody live near St. Louis that wants to give BettyLu a hundred seedlings of so to adopt?

hi mary.. welcome .... fight the slug fight... but i would not go cutting them up ... they do have a second flush here.. in the next few weeks/month .. after that.. cut A FEW of the worst out.. and they should look better ... but lets get a little zen here ... THE IMPORTANT PART IS THE DINNER AND THE NUPTIALS .. not the darn garden ... whatever it is.. it will be a wonderful setting for the dinner ... i highly doubt.. after the important stuff is done.. some nut is going to come up to you.. or snicker behind your back.. that the hosta were ugly .. or that the garden was not all it could be .. just do the best you can ... and FORGET ABOUT THE GARDEN ... and personally.. i would quit moving them ... you are really making this a stressor that it should NOT be ... good luck ken PS: your wedding???

Seems Gerry Bennett had a garden on the tour of the AHS convention in 2011, so some of the "hosta guys' may know him. I'm not exactly sure where that convention was, but it seems that it was somewhere around/in Connecticut. There are several Gerry Bennetts on Linked in and on facebook.

Well, hope nobody minds, but I set the photo as my desktop background. An incentive not to forget it.

I can see this one set up beside White Wall Tire, total reverse.
Who cares if it blooms! Who cares if it has a scent or not. It is totally drop dead gorgeous. I'm smitten.

I could hope it turns up in First Look next year. I mean, after all, with all the hosta I'm not buying this year, I'll have a pot load of hosta money to use at the auction. But, if it were between me and an accomplished hybridizer, I'd bow out.

Yes, the Bennets have two large clumps growing next to their house. A very unique hosta.

A brief description is given in the 2011 AHS National Convention booklet: "...a highly visible sport of 'Honeybells' that he calls H. 'Second Coming'. H. 'Second Coming' is characterized by bright green leaves with virtually every vein a pure white color. Now that is a high drama hosta worth seeing."

Thanks for pointing out the similar hosta on your Lined-Leaved Hostas list, Don.

I have Maya Tritone. I am really enthused about the Second Coming being a fragrant hosta with a minimum of white, just at the veins.

If they have two large clumps, and it is staying true to type, one has to hope it can be a nice garden hosta some day.
I know nothing about a hosta being good for tissue culturing, do not know how they decide to try. Too bad, but perhaps it can be divided as time goes by without harming the OS.

Now that I finished my taxes, I can pursue some hosta gardening and wild bird watching. I'm saving my tax refund to finance First Look bidding.

Oh, I'm a member of AHS, Ken. Paid two years dues this time.
And wouldn't you know it, he lives in MA ? Learned that after we just sold the house up there!

Perhaps I could plan a trip up north later in the spring, just to pick up the hosta.....I mean, we made some trips that far to deliver and pick up parrots, so why not.......for a good reason.
I mean, I'm looking at that hosta on my wallpaper all the time now, and it is still gorgeous.

Well, there goes my tax refund, sooner than I'd planned. But we'll see if there might be a deal. I wanted Stud Muffin, and called Paula Lehtola about it, she ended up putting it in First Look auction and I won it. Maybe the Bennets would consider doing their hosta in First Look as well. Because I'm not familiar to them, and could hardly expect any favor of trusting a stranger with the hosta they babied all these years.

We'll see. Now that I'm done with taxes, my spirits are soaring and confidence is high, and the need for more hosta more hosta is overwhelming. :)

Ken, did you not feel that way about the Moonbeam hosta?
