From the AHS Email Robin ... Charlotte had put out an email earlier this year that she would be starting her GOTW. I asked her if she was interested in a WNY garden, and she definitely was ...

I enjoyed the "pictorial tour" of your garden very much. Isn't the name of your garden Mystic Meadows? When I saw the picture with the water in the early morning backdrop, it was easy to see why you chose that name. It looked wonderfully "mystic" with the early morning fog swirling about. What a wonderful water feature you have!

My youngest BIL grew an avocado tree from a pit back in the 60's. When it grew big enough, IL's planted it outside their bedroom window. All well and good for several decades (lived through several serious frosts which did lots of damage in the Bay Area) - there was another avocado tree close enough that theirs did grow fruit which we all ate for years. They finally took the tree out some time around 2000, as it was damaging the sidewalk outside the bedroom, and they were afraid it was going to damage the foundation slab of that end of the house. It was also a raccoon magnet, and they ate and fought over the avocados on a nightly basis as long as there were any of them ripe. I missed the avocados, but did NOT miss the raccoon fights up on the roof!

Thanks. Doing that Stocktank pond inground was one of my better ideas. It really was a very big project, more work than I had initially immagined but I am extra pleased with the results. Yesterday I saw a frog sitting in the water hyacinths in the floating ring.

A week away from my garden - too long?

It probably would be fine, assuming we don't have a heat wave kicking temps up into the upper 90s, which is not real likely based on the cooler-than-average weather so far this year. (I know both our counties have had a few warm days already this year, but they have tended to be the exception and not the rule.) Also, your "little" plants HAVE been in the ground for a while and should have pretty good root systems by the time you go on vacation. You can help prepare them for your absence by watering them very deeply (to a depth of 6") less often as opposed to watering more shallowly more often. That will send their roots down deep to where more moisture resides in the soil. Finally, don't feed them any fertilizer in the week to ten days before you leave. Fertilizing them at that point would give them new growth that might get thirsty more easily than older growth. If you are really worried about it and don't have anyone in your neighborhood that you can rely upon to check on your plants, you can buy a timer and put a soaker hose on a timer and put it in the bed with the plants. You can set the timer to water briefly every day or every other day or whatever will give you peace of mind. Having 2" to 3" of mulch on the ground will also keep the soil moist by slowing the evaporation of moisture from the soil. Being gone a week in May is not going to be too detrimental to your garden, especially if we receive anything close to our average May rainfall. Being gone a week in July or August would be a lot worse for the garden. Dawn

I just finished a wonderful tour of your gardens. Just what I needed on a rainy day! The water pond was really nice. Do you recall the name of the dark burgundy peony? It's a gorgeous color and looks really nice with the Soloman's Seal. Thank you for giving me a 'grand tour'. Marg

Pam, your home and gardens are so lovely, I am turning terribly green with envy here. Since I won't be able to achieve anything close to what you have, I will console myself by being a copycat and getting a blue gazing ball like yours. I enjoyed the seasonal changes in the pictures and especially liked daylily Mystic Avalon. Only missing thing: pics of your two dogs that have quite a task in protecting things from the deer.

Thanks everyone ... right now my farm is a disgusting muddy mess! Can't wait until it gets colder this week .. and freezes.

Floota - yes, my farm is Mystic Meadows Daylily Farm ... and I often have misty mornings like that. And I just love my pond!

Avedon - I'm sure your gardens are lovely too! Please do copy my gazing ball ... I actually have a couple of them around the gardens.

mantis - I can't post pictures from work, but I've attached a link to the Pets forum where there are quite a few pics of all my furry kids!

Marg - that's a tree peony, I'll have to look for the name at home ... it's amazing in the spring.

I took a peek when Charlotte posted on the Robin. Really nice and I have to say, the snow scene is my favorite along with the pond when not frozen over.

I always check the Garden of the Week, but didn't realize that the beautiful garden last week belonged to a daylily forum member. Your garden is absolutely gorgeous. It's so nice to see such a lovely garden at this time of year.

Thank you for alloing all of us to tour your gorgeous garden and see the beautiful blooms, they are soo paretty, snd I love our little DOnkeys.The colors of them are very nice, too.Love that pond, too, and the gazing ball.I have wanted a gazing ball for ever but, so far have not been able to get me one, so I have to injoy every one elses.
