A few observations...

I love this time of year when everything is changing so fast that you can hardly keep up! My obscura is pumping out blooms like crazy...

I think I mentioned in a post that I had to chop my large macgillivrayii completely down this spring. I think it must have been the roots because so far, there are no signs of life with the old "stump." But the ones I rooted and potted up first are putting out strong new growth. Here's one...

I love the new bronze leaves on McG...

I took callistrophylla down yesterday for it's weekly VF-11 bath and watering and found that the buds I'd found the week or so before had aborted =( But I did see some new buds forming in the same place, and as a bonus, I found this one particularly gigantic leaf that had apparently been an explosion of growth...

And one more... I didn't get a photo yet, but cagyensis is one I've had for over a year. It rooted quickly but has never done anything but sit there and taunt me with it's very cool leaves. Seems like the more I wanted it to grow and see more of the beautiful leaves, the more stubborn it got! Anyway, the three node cutting now has a growth point at ALL THREE nodes! I'm so excited! When the growth is more obvious, I'll post a photo.

"They get paid for big pretty fruit and that means fair to good quality at best" Yup, that's why so much of it tastes like Kleenex. I think that the average backyard grower in a reasonable climate who just leaves it up to Mother Nature will usually be pretty happy with the results in terms of flavor and sugar content - generally far better than anything the grocery stores can throw at you. My only really disappointing year with stone fruits was 2009, when it was abnormally cold and went wet-dry-wet. Fruit was large and pretty and even fairly sweet but with no flavor. I let most of the peaches just drop and then composted or fed to birds, they were that bland.

I appreciate how you enjoy your plants. Possibly the roots of your kirkii were damaged more than you realized causing the leaves to fold. Kirkii leaves are fairly stiff, but it will recover over time. Give it a little balanced fertilizer, a porous potting mix such as area commercial nurseries use, open shade, make sure the soil remains dampish and conducive to root growth, and thats about all you can do.

ATTENTION PEOPLE No dishwasher is silent or anywhere near silent. Do not believe your friends or neighbors, or GWebbers or the sales or marketing people. That product just doesn't exist. The new generation of dishwashers especially the Europeans are very quiet. That is not silent. Do not take what someone around here say literal: "I can't hear my dishwasher when it's running" They really mean: it's very quiet and "I can barely hear it" and "compared to that GE Potscrubber I had it darnnear sounds silent" Not really the same as silent. Fridge had a poor experience with Miele service, no one is perfect as these companies employ humans and all of their frailaties. What people gush about around hear is that Miele generally makes really good products and responds well to service. They do make a shoddy item once in a while and have some turkeys working for them but odds are favorable you'll have a good experience. Besides , who else gives you your money back because you don't like a dishwasher 3 months later? Other brands don't have as good of odds, but even so you can still get a unit that works well for 20 years or finds a gem of a customer service rep should you call on them too. Nothing is absolute or lasts long term. Look at Toyota, they pretty much owned the car industry at the turn of the century, lead everyones top 10 list and were lights out with J.D. Powers. Got a bit too big for their britches the last 2 years and things have changed. It's NO GUARANTEE , just ask the folks that bought a Prius recently who reasoned "it's a Toyota, it'll be great, perfect , and lovely for ever, and if it breaks they'll hold my hand and ply me with hot chocolate and I'll feel all warm and fuzzy again." samie - western Canada is very large and sparsely populated, how many svc. techs would make you feel good? A better question to ask would have been " My DW is broken, how long before you can get to my house to look at it?"

My observations from Italy and the citrus in Florence...photos!

I think a lot of people here are missing the point about the citrus collections in and around Florence. They are a 'museum collection' of ancient citrus varieties - some individual plants believed to be around 300 years old. They have survived floods, freezes and wars, and they are grown in the traditional way with the only fertilizer being composted animal dung. The soil (US=dirt) in the pots was, and often still is, the local sandy river-basin loam. The majority are lemons, citrons and bitter oranges because other species common today were unknown in the Medici era. Many are 'bizarre' or 'monstrous' types (horned, furrowed, strangely-shaped) because people were becoming interested in how these deviations arose. And they are not grown to produce lots of fruit, but to enhance the look of ornamental gardens and to preserve the old varieties. It is unfair to say that Italy is not a modern citrus producer. But not in the Florence region. If you check the statistics, you will find that Italy grows about a third of the tonnage of USA. Not bad for a much smaller country. For tangerine/mandarine/clementine types production is even equal to that of USA. Oh no! Now I really need callistophylla!

Obscura is adorable. Glad to hear macgillivrayii is doing well. Do you have cagayanensis, or fitchii formerly known as CFM-8 formerly known as cagayanensis? Just curious. I'm planning on getting both anyway.

Yep, callistophylla is a must have, those leaves are so hard, but they are beautiful.

Denise, did you find obscura to be a young bloomer or did it have to mature some.

Denise that new callistophylla leaf is huge! The Hoya obscura is very cute, I swear one day I will get my darn plant to bloom.

I think Hoya pimenteliana is the accepted name of the white flowered, satiny leafed plant that was sold as Hoya cagayensis. My plant has impressive spurts of growth as well but I always seem to kill the vines when I try to get them under control and secured on their trellis, instead of everything else that is in reach. I may just give my plant more height/space and let it go wild.

Dee - for me, obscura was an early bloomer. It became VERY potbound FAST, so I moved it to a huge pot. From about a 5" pot to a 12" pot. It took it about a year to settle in, and now it's growing and blooming profusely.

Mike - so is cagyensis not an accepted species? I like to think I have correct names, so I'm just wanting to know if I need to change my tag...

Here's what I read about cagayanensis. Apparently it used to be known as pimenteliana, and CFM-8 used to be known as cagayanensis. Then somewhere along the line they decided that was wrong, that CFM-8 (now known as fitchii) was NOT cagayanensis, and that pimenteliana was now an invalid name.

It's all confusing. But when you said it had cool looking leaves, I figured it was probably fitchii, as cagayanensis has smooth leaves, from what I've seen in pics, and fitchii has interesting looking veined leaves.

Yes I was mistaken Quinn is right, Hoya cagayanensis is the proper name. The leaves are plain green but with a satin sheen and the flowers are white.

Well, I'm glad we cleared that up, but now I realize I was using the wrong species name! Silly me... I got cagayanensis and deykeae from the same person, and even though they look NOTHING alike, I'm always mixing up the names! Cagayanensis has been a strong grower for me...

Deykeae is the one that's FINALLY starting to grow. Here it is before it started to grow...

This one has succulent leaves, very textured. The new leaves are growing fast, so I should be able to post a photo in a week or so where you can really see the new growth.
