Hey everyone,

I found great deals on amazon books. I was able to purchase Daylilies, The Perfect Perennial by Hill for only 2.19 and the 3 dollars and change for shipping by buying used. The book was written in 91 so focuses on what we would consider older DL. My total cost was under 6 dollars for a good book that looked brand new. I see it is now offered for 2.83 plus the $3 shipping. Prices can change from week to week on the used books. If you go to books on the amazon website and then use daylilies as the search all of the books come up that they currently have available along with new and used prices. The really best deal was The Daylily Guide for Gardeners by Peat and Petit. The pictures are stunning. I was able to buy used total cost of $10.00, a couple of weeks ago, but now I see the lowest is around $15.00, The book, although used, appears brand new, and it is really good. New purchase price is $30.00, so used is the way to go. Also, The New Encyclopedia of Daylilies by Peat and Petit is being released next month. Everyone is taking advance orders. I searched and compared quite a bit and found the cheapest was from Tower Books because shipping was free. Can't wait for this one!!! Oh, I know you could go to the library but I don't want to part with the books after just a few weeks and my library didn't have the books I wanted.

Just wanted to share, I will be spending the winter reading and planning.

I have the book The Perfect Perennial by Hill which made me smile at the thought of the title since the perfect perennial to me is one which you plant and it takes care of itself. LOL.
Enjoy your reading. Hmmm, we are predicted with a rain/snow mix here in upstate NY. Hope they are wrong.

Yes to have some gardenbooks for the winter reads is necessary. How could we survive without them? Thanks to you Cindy, I ordered Hill's book you mentioned above.....I did find 'The Gardener's Guide to Growing Daylilies' by Diana Grenfell, second hand, some months ago. Like it very much.
Can't wait to hear your opinions of 'The New Encyclopedia of Daylilies' by Peat and Petit. I have the old encyclopedia.

"Gaia's Garden," by Tony Hemenway. It's about using permaculture systems to make your garden stronger, and the new second edition is full of drool-worthy color photos. I love "Farm City"! I got it just before Christmas and I'm already re-reading it. Another great farm book is "Little Heathens," by Mildred Armstrong Kalish, which reads like the Little House books updated for the 1930s. :) Seymour is amazing. I constantly re-read his "Self-Sufficient Life" book--the illustrations are magical--and I just got "Self-Sufficient Gardener" for the first time. My chicken book of choice is currently the incredibly charming "Keep Chickens" by Barbara Kilarski, but if we actually take the plunge this spring (we're thinking about), I suppose we'll get the Storey guide to keeping and raising chickens.

I frequently borrow gardening books and magazines from our local library. I also have about a kazillion websites bookmarked for pretty pics and I especially like some from the UK, even tho their climate is milder than mine, because I like cottage style gardens. One site with North American gardens is www.houzz.com - one can view landscaping from various areas of NA, also porches, etc. There are a lot of good gardening blogs also - one of my favs is a GW poster - her site is http://definingyourhome.blogspot.com/ - again a warmer zone but still lots of nice eye candy and info. Pretty pics from the Netherlands here: http://www.korfhoeve.nl/ - just click on fotogalerie - no need to speak the language, the pics say it all! Magazines such as http://www.homesandgardens.com/gardens/ from the UK have lots of garden ideas. Many other magazines also have garden pics online. I'm in a bit of a hurry right now so am just grabbing links as I find them in my bookmarks. http://yardshare.com/ has quite a few 'real' gardens, some are inspirational. And sometimes I even like looking at all the plants at http://www.richters.com/ for inspiration. My apologies for not posting clickable links, I must learn how to do that! :-)

Here's an example from Gardenweb. Someone in southeast Asia put up a picture of a beautiful HT. But I knew that HT had only been introduced eight months earlier (I knew the hybridizer and that he was no where near se Asia.) So I asked how the poster managed to grow that rose. I got an on line response that was dripping in snottiness to the effect that I was stupid for not realizing that he could grow great roses and maybe I didn't know the country he lived in. I responded with my reasoning that even if he got budwood, it was unlikely that he could propagate a budded rose big enough in the time available to produce that large and perfect a bloom. ( I then emailed spike about the problem.) To my knowledge that poster wasn't heard of again. BUT , off line, I got an email from someone I recognized from Hawaii, and she included a link to the photo she had posted, and pointed out how the troll ahd photoshopped her image to match the petal colors of the rose in question. Why did a troll do that? Boredom? Wanted to hook up with someone in this hemisphere? I doubt we'll ever know.
