New garden--need sun tolerant ideas

I have decided to get rid of my perennial garden that I planted before this hosta bug hit me. It faces south and gets FULL/HOT sun most of the day. I would like some ideas of some hostas that may fare well here. I plan to put down soaker hoses and keep them watered (especially since they are on a slope). Thanks! Jenna

I find they do extremely well, grow lushly and bloom lavishly with morning sun and later afternoon/evening sun. They wilt something awful and burn a bit in a couple hours of direct afternoon sun - again, in my experience. ===>>>> the alternative way to say this is.... no sun in the heat of the day .... say 2 to 6 pm .... give or take ... it is the exact description of what sun a hosta would like .... in fact.. most 'shade' plants are really only shade tolerant .... and would like some sun .... presuming you can get them the water they need in that sun ... and by avoiding the highest water loss time.. the heat of the day ... 2 to 6 ... you reduce the amount of water you need to provide for them to thrive ... most plants sweat ... transpire .. give off water ... and if they get too hot.. and cant pump enough water .. then the leaf tissue will be damaged [think sunburn on pasty white skin] .... so its a fine balance between sun.. heat.. and water ... ken

Switchgrass--there are several really nice varieties marketed and they are quite beautiful when in bloom which starts in July and are ornamental all winter. Queen of the Prairie, Maximillian Sunflower, Amorpha fruticosa, Helianthus angustifolius (Swamp Sunflower) An impressive specimen grass that will get very large & dramatic when grown wet --bottom photo--Muhlenbergia lindheimeri). That's an interesting article morz. Seattle having a night time low of 71F is a bit mind boggling, it's almost the high. I happened to be visiting the PNW during one of the worse heat waves you had in the early 1990s...maybe 91? I can't remember exactly when my family took that trip. It was no more than a couple years after the Loma Prieta earthquake because there was still evidence of it in San Francisco. Anyhow, although Port Angeles (where we spent the warmest 24h before taking the ferry to Victoria) was in the upper 80s, which they said never happened, we all agreed the humidity was not as bad as eastern US humidity. How could it be, with all the cold, deep water around? So I bet when Seattle had that 71F low the dewpoint was still several degrees lower. Dewpoints at or above 70F is where the discomfort truly becomes surreal. Anyhow, yeah the PNW is a rather different kind of maritime climate than the UK. Much sunnier in the dry season, alas, also wetter in the wet season. Which might explain why people have a little more luck establishing plants like Phoenix canariensis, at least temporarily until the next Siberian outbreak, in places like London than in even the urban heat island of Seattle. London's DJF precip total is 6 inches, Seattle's is 14.5! Main advantage of the PNW compared to the UK's is the relative lack of late spring freezes over a broader area, instead of just the favorable maritime areas like Cornwall. Hence the reason we can buy Oregon grown hazelnuts and not West Midlands grown ones!* Probably related to the changeability of Atlantic conditions and jet stream movements versus Pacific, which is strongly influenced by the monotonicity of the Asian monsoon/Siberian high. (and all this from a Seattle gardener of many years who extensively studied the climate, a certain Robert Wagner...not my deductions but I agree with them) On UK gardening forums I often spot posts of some spring flower being snatched by a late freeze, at least in frost prone parts of the garden. * (among other reasons, of course. Fresh UK grown agricultural products are rare in the US, period. I noticed when I was shopping in the UK that most of the even the temperate produce came from the European mainland. I think a lot of UK agricultural land just grows grains, not fruits and veggies. Spanish clementines? All over the US in winter. But I welcome a correction if I'm wrong. At any rate, my gosh, some of the pit fruits grown in France were absurdly tasty and reasonably priced to boot, at least when I spent a summer in the UK in the mid 90s...also noticed on later visits. OTOH packaged foods like orange juice, of course, are much more expensive in Europe, period. No 'Juice Trains' crossing the continent LOL, as in the US.)

if you moved it from full shade. to sun.. after it leafed out.. without hardening off ... then that is sun burn ... as well as transplant shock ... no way gold standard.. it doesnt have any gold... if it has 3 inch white fragrant flowers .. royal standard a maybe ... i dont see hvx.. and its early for most of us.. for nems ... i feel like there is a lot of chicken little in this post ... but what do i know ... Chris' fred flintstone computer.. cant handle houzz ... and he is very busy.. but he does work his own website... if you want to send the pix there .... let us know if you do also.. i would never fert a transplant .. its already in enough shock ... ken

all hosta are ONLY shade tolerant.. ergo.. in theory.. they should all do fine in sun ... grow like stinkin weeds ...

what you want to avoid is most white tissue in high heat ...

and blue, since the wax that makes them blue can melt off ...

other than that.. its really all about how any given hosta will do in the spot you have for it.. and frankly we cant answer that ...

if something doesnt work.. move it ... eh

Jenna - I'm in Minnetonka, Minnesota. I have many hostas in full sun. They'll be fine as long as they get enough water. And they grow much faster than when they are shaded.

Sun tolerant" is subjective. It all depends on your zone. I'm about the same latitude as southern Illinois, but we get REAL sun in summer, with no clouds and no rain so my hostas do very well with a few hours of direct eastern sun, but the rest need that 50% shade cloth stretched over 2x2 lumber. It does all depend on your latitudes...or your attitudes..haha If you are watering a lot and they are still getting sun burned, well then, move them. They won't die.

Babka, we get real sun here in southern IL too and usually have a 2 to three month drought every summer. No hosta do well here in full sun even with adequate water.
