being what i presume is an old hippie ... he is known for naming a lot of his own plants with rock and roll names .... lets call this the lightening round.. and list some ...

i can think of satisfaction...

i am wondering about maggie may ...

and i am sure there are many others.. of which i am now blanking.. since i started typing....

and i would prefer we play the game.. before someone pulls out a list by don or some such ... maybe he can make a new list.. if he never thought of this one.. of which.. i doubt .. lol ...

sooo.. for now.. off the cuff... can you add some rock and roll names????

i think if you dilute the heck out of it it would be ok... i try and recycle everything, in fact if im buying certain things that will likely break or deteriorate before i die, i think about how am i going to dispose of it. it saves me money. my patio table/chairs was bought becuase its aluminum(if it breaks i can still recoup a few bucks) lately my thing has been pallets. last weekend i brought 3 home from work, and built a crate (for 2 SWCs i built from neighbors cat litter buckets, wife wasnt thrilled about the sight of cat litter buckets in the yard, dont blame her) a build as you grow potato bin, birdhouse(funny story, that was a bet that i could build a birdhouse in 30 minutes, i took me 45, but still) and a nice toasty fire outside while i admired my creations. i love pallets check out global buckets.org? just google global buckets. great stuff. google "self watering container plastic tote" at my thrift stores theres ALWAYS(unless im looking for them) plastic totes. you can make a seed starting heat mat out of xmas lights, cardboard and an old cookie sheet(items usually at the thrift store) i save water bottles(we dont use alot) for mini drip irrigation waterers. poke 3-5 holes in the bottom and one in the cap. fill from rain barrel, sit down at base of tomato. 1 liter of water in the soil. less disease. less water wasted. i can go on for days. i likely will.

this post makes me close to cringing... not from funny so much as close to my heart. I've been 'red neck chic' long before it had a name and have dealt with the county over it for quite some time. the part of the old ratty couch...well, in one place, I did have a comfortable old thing, with a dark blue cover over it..got nailed for that one, from the county.. and it wasn't even mine!..we rented and I decided not to take it away cuz the grandkids liked to jump on it.. finally, I got fined $250 for my garden junk... we moved back to my place and I began a collection of more junk and defended it to the core.. this past year I went to battle again..different county..different county officials..(gestapo) long story short...... in a way I won.. in a way I didn't.... my health went down cuz of it but the upside is that the stoooopid county office has had to go back to their antiquated books and have actually had to 'rewrite' Article One, for the county. although I used to think all the cutesy junk in the yard was fun and whimsical, now I just don't care for the pink flamingos..now, cuz of the harrassment that I"ve gotten from my neighbors..I don't care about cute. I'm more interested in hanging some taxidermy animals from trees...(no, I'm not going to do it but the thought is there). I'm into anything that I can get away with, that will pisss the neighbors off! the toilet planter is going to be first on the list, come spring. I want one of those signs or metal cut out of a boy peeing, that you see in the back window of trucks.. aimed in their yard's direction.. a witch that will be anchored to the tree, that will stay up all year.. maybe a cauldron... or, I could just let it drop all together and pay $75 for a permit to build a fence, right next to the one they built, that's higher than 8 feet...with irregular top, cuz they did such a good job of making theirs rather straight.. and also I'd love to enlist the help of high schoolers over, to use their artistic ablilty to paint away, along the entire fence, to make a black silhouette of something stark and weird.. or probably only plant some ornamental grasses along the fence line.. I don't know, the fight just isn't there any more for me. the garden junk theme has taken on an entirely different entity. I still like to read all that's going on but now I don't go out with such enthusiasm to find good curb shopping things.. it's time to pass the torch to those who still do or just learning of the thrill of the hunt. for me...I'm more inside now, doing mosaics..lol drawing and painting..wait for the rains to come and water plants that I don't pay so much attention to. and if you haven't seen the picture of the metal shopping cart, turned 'redneck barbeque grill'..you gotta do a google imgage search for that one.. it's hilarious, no matter how jaded you become.......

Has anyone had experience with Hostas Direct? I'm waiting on an order from them, and after some of the posts I've read, I'll be looking at my shipment with a critical eye. There are 3 features of their website that swayed me to buy their products: 1. Many Hostas are available in 3 different sizes - starter (rooted tissue culture starts), advanced starter (about 2X bigger) and mature division - so you can get a small Hosta for a small price, or a larger Hosta for a reasonable price. 2. They have several cultivars for less than $5, and they are not always the smaller sizes for that price - sometimes you can get a mature division. 3. After placing a $50 order, I got a free Hosta of my choosing (from a list). I chose 'Stained Glass', which is a newer Hosta. They were swift in sending me an order confirmation with an invoice number, which not all online nurseries do. I also like their website. When you are looking through their selections, you can sort by name, price, rating, bestsellers, etc. And you can search by color, 1st letter of the name, sun-resistant, slug-resistant, AHS rating, etc. They give detailed information about each Hosta, listing everything from leaf color to leaf size, number of vein pairs, lineage, plant size, etc. You can do a side-by-side comparison of Hostas. They have a shopping cart and a wish list. My wish list is full of Hostas that I intend to buy next month, in $50 increments. So far, I am really impressed, but like I said, I am still waiting for the plants to arrive. I would appreciate anyone's input on their experience with this company. bejoy2

I did buy one label. My BF in junior high and I went to Mervyn's so we could buy genuine Sonny and Cher labeled outfits. I bought the pants in the picture. But was a petite little hard belly and I rocked them with the mating halter style tummy tickler they came with. The low cut hip hugger pants and top were bright yellow daisy print. The eyelet was white with a bright hot pink/fuchsia velvet ribbon at the knee. The top had the same eyelet at the bottom with the ribbon. Wish I still had the outfit . It would be worth something today. My friend bought a more conservative outfit in turquoise. It was in a poorboy (vertical ribs) knit with large bells and a babydoll top. The pic is not me. I was a lot smaller than that girl. I just found the pic on the net to show the pants.

Purple Haze....now where did you find that was a Wasitis plant? I missed it totally, and is Revolution his too? Wow. That expands the list beyond the 2 pages on AHS Registry.

This is his, Purple Passion.....but not a song that I recall. It has meaning to me though....my college had the PUrples and the Golds in competition. The Golds were Lions....how boring. And the Purples were....(are you ready for this)....PURPLE COWS. So there was a lot of Purple Passion on campus.

It's not, Mocc. Neither is Bell Bottom Blues. I guess I misunderstood Ken's post. I was thinking Ken started off mentioning Chick's plants, but then asked, 'can you add some rock & roll names?' I thought he meant hosta rock n' roll names in general. My bad, I hereby disqualify my answers and withdraw my opportunity for lightning round.

i dont care.. if you guys are having fun ...

but i was being specific to chic ...

i have never met him .. he is one of those nursery owners who does NOT travel far and wide ... in season .... or out of season ... the MI groups USED TO pay such.. to travel to talk in winter ... maybe he came and i missed it ... and i dont ever recall him at hosta college.. etc ....

but i think he has quite an eye.. for offering new plants that are actually different enough to be great additions to the hosta family ...

i just figured.. if i somehow stroked him.. he would send me plants.. lol.. no thats an outright lie.. lol ..

does moc satisfaction look right.. maybe its just the wet leaves and yellowish pic ... and early leaves ... isnt it supposed to be darker green???? .. i bet its just the pic... as moc has this sorta love affair with these darn plants... lol ... a mother always knows her own babies... lol ..

anyway.. as you were ... have fun ..

Ken, I'm glad you made your statement about my Satisfaction. It was actually my Satisfaction NOID, not purchased as such, but was one which came from PDN in 2010 in my first order. My intro to this forum was trying to identify what actually arrived in that my initial hosta order EVER.

It was the top name for my NOID, and I had on its label, Satisfaction NOID. So, could be you are right. I have never felt totally SATISFIED....."I can't get no"....if you will....using that name for this plant.

Here is the real one, which I purchased from Hornbaker in 2012. If I had known Wasitis originated it, I'd have gone to Bridgewood for it. On left is the NOID, on right is the Hornbaker purchase. Taken October 2012

Oops, I am not the song police here, just wanted to ask if they were Wasitis hosta, which was my reading of the question. I jump to conclusions a lot, and did not think any of yours were "wrong" but just asked if Wasitis what whositis. :)

More the merrier, right? We're talking R&R here.

I made a mistake here.
Purple Passion is NOT a Wasitis hosta, although Bridgewood sells it. Herb Benedict is credited with Purple Passion.

Well, 'Little Town Flirt' was my "playing by the rules" contribution, but now that we're letting just any old rockin hosta on the thread, I've gotta throw in 'Sergeant Pepper'

Photo is not mine (probably one of ya'lls!), as mine was already half dormant when I picked it up last fall.

Ah, of course it is! I bought 'Sergeant Pepper' from Bridgewood, and now I remember reading in the description that it was one of their first introductions. Somewhere along the line I got it into my head it was Bill Meyer's...I mixed it up with his similarly variegated 'Luna Moth.'

Thank you for pointing that out. I'm really looking forward to seeing Sergeant Pepper this year. It multiplied nicely and is coming up with five pips. I like that soft Spring variegation which sharpens over the growing season. It also had an especially bright fall look.

Mocc, I thought you were talking about Purple Passion, the drink. (That's been a while.)

You're right about the radio and Stevie Ray Vaughn. I heard 'Pride and Joy' it the day my Don R hosta arrived. I never hear the song now, that I don't see the hosta in my mind.
