I'm having no luck trying to trade regular old plants for beloved Hoyas on the exchange board!

How else can one get Hoya cuttings that one can afford?

You probably need to have hoyas to trade for hoyas...do you live near a Home Depot or Lowes? They usually carry nice full 6" or 8" hanging baskets of Exotic Angel hoyas for around $10 to $15. It takes a while for most hoya cuttings to grow into plants, you know!

haven't seen any Hoyas yet at our HD -- it's a very lame store, you can rarely find anyone to help you, and their plants are so bone dry it makes me hurt to look at them!

I am not surprised, not all Home Depots are the same. In my neck of the woods the plants are all drenched to the point of soaking!! I'd rather buy them dry. Still, if you stop in on a regular basis, you should see carnosas, lacunosa (mini wax leaf), linearis, and kentiana - those are some of the more common ones at my Home Depots, there are several stores in my area.

What part of the country are you in that yr. HD sells H. Linearis??? I want some!!!! I had some a couple of yrs. ago from a plant friend (from here) living in NJ; Linearis can be tricky (wants very wet conditions) & after some time I lost mine & want more!!! It's such a cool plant & looks nothing like the average Hoya!!

I'm just south of you, about an hour and ten down the parkway or the turnpike...I have seen linearis at Home Depots in Burlington, Moorestown, Manahawkin and I think Toms River - though not positive about Toms River.

You know, most of the people I know that have killed this one think it was due to overwatering...I have had no problems with mine, and I treat it as I do all my plants, hoyas and otherwise..water when dry. Nothing gets a drop until it dries out, meaning like 80 or 90% dry!! Now this doesn't mean my plants sit there bone dry for a week until I notice they need water...I check them pretty much every day, so I water AS SOON as the plant dries out. I have noticed that as soon as it reaches that "dry" point, the needles on linearis droop a teeny bit right away. I have treated it this way since I got it, and haven't lost a leaf or stem or had any problems whatsoever.

So I don't care what anyone says about a plant liking it wet, mine only get water when they are newly dry, a few hours dry won't kill them - but it is so difficult to figure out how wet is too wet and what is going on down below where the roots are, so I think you are better off letting a plant go a bit dry than trying to achieve that perfect "wet" balance! And if you are vigilant, it won't be dry long enough to do any real damage or harm to the root system.

I just sent cuttings out, but if you don't find one, ask me in the spring and I'd be happy to send you some.

I had a couple of small sprigs of Linearis, for maybe a yr., grew them on a bed of pumice in an open top glass jar, 'cause I kept getting drying up needles. Otherwise except for my Lacunosa, I DO let my Hoyas dry out btwn waterings, hum ...

oh boy, lacunosa takes some getting used to - kinda finicky. Mine was soaked/waterlogged when I bought it and it took forever to get that one straight, I am amazed it even made it. I finally put mine in a clay pot, that way even if I do keep it one the wetter side, the clay keeps the air circulating thru the soil and it isn't TOO wet.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. I'm looking for some help with a hoya carnosa plant i just purchased from navlet's nurserie. When i brought it home it's soil was moist so i didn't water it for about a week. I guess i was thinking that since it had the thick succulant type leaves it could stand a little drying out. So, after i watered it the leaves started to quickly shrivel up and fall off, the stems started drying up half way up. I have it in a bright south window. I'd appreciate any advise on what to do. I've always admired my aunts hoya plants she had, when i was young she knew i loved her plants and would give me cuttings from her hoya. But being to young, never got them to do anything. She has passed on, and i would love to be able to grow these wonderful plants. How do i go about getting cuttings to try? Thanks for any help anyone can give me. --tami

Nova is right...you'd have better luck getting replies if you start your own thread since this one is from over a year ago.

As for getting cuttings, you should go to the exchange forum for that and post a thread there (just click the link at the top right of the main hoya forum page - it says "exchanges" I think). You can either offer postage for cuttings or trade for cuttings. If not, you can try some online places or Ebay. Also, you might want to try posting a picture of your carnosa.
