Really fine color for Orange Marmalade.
But I think I saw the other plant in another shot, and was wondering if it was Whirlwind? The one I got from Lowes looks something like that, really like it too. If anything is wrong with it, I'll be replacing that little guy.

It's supposed to be Ann Kulpa, but I question it. This is it's first year, and it looks like the first Ann Kulpa at the HL. It doesn't look like a mature one, so we'll see. Both Whirlwind and Ann Kulpa are John Kulpa introductions,

Maybe I am learning a little at a time, like some breeders tend to introduce plants of a certain style.

Now I'll have to check out Ann Kulpa or John Kulpa hosta introductions. Whirlwind is sure nice, and I already have Second Wind, a sport of Whirlwind I think it said.

I was holding my breath over Orange Marmalade, I moved it in the early summer just before the drought, and it sure didn't like being in more sun and less moisture, sulked all the rest of the year. But it's coming up, and looks good so far.

Can't tell yet about the color, it was in so much shade last spring that it was mostly green and yellow and was almost covered up by a bigger hosta..

I find that Paul Aden hostas do well for me and I really like them. He was supposed to be an odd duck. He was very secretive about his hosta. I love a story. Maybe someone will tell this one.

My original Orange Marmelade did not like all the sun and the moisture I was providing, so I split it and planted two plants behind dwarf conifers. Here is a picture of one of them last spring. I also split of a third one. Bernd

Be careful talking about splitting Orange Marmalade. We don't want the hosta police breaking down your door since it has a patent. ;)

BKay, you use past tense--Paul Aden WAS---is he no longer in this world? I have run across his name a lot from reading material from Tony Avent at Plant Delights.PDN mentions him a good bit, and has some of his hosta available as well. Their breeding program features plantaginea and warm climate hosta, but not exclusively I'm sure.

Bernd, I'd keep all I could grow of Orange Marmalade, and put motion detectors to expose hosta rustlers in the night.

I saw Orange Marmalade at Lowe's late last summer. I passed, at first. Then Phil said how lovely it was in the spring, so I went back and bought it. (I get so few chances to buy a hosta in person, I can't resist.) We had the summer from hell last year and of course, it melted. That didn't seem to hurt it, though. It's colors are blazing, that's all I can say.

Yes, Paul Aden died in 2010. Many of the great hosta breeders have been lost the last couple of years.

I have been reading this post with interest,and I find a glaring error. I'm sorry to hear that Paul Aden passed away,because I have several of his introductions in my garden. The glaring error is that Bob Solberg,not Paul Aden was the one who introduced Orange Marmalade back in 2002. I get Bob Solberg's newsletter every year,and I even bought my Orange Marmalade directly from him several years ago. Sorry! The other Phil from NC

Well, actually I didn't know who introduced Orange Marmalade. It's a lovely plant. Mine is spectacular, thank you very much for the recomendation.

I was just remarking that I enjoyed many Paul Aden hosta after Moccasin asked about Ann Kulpa and Whirlwind, two John Kulpa introductions. We were just remarking about breeders in general and how they tended to introduce similar hosta.

Sorry we weren't clear. I didn't mean to imply that Orange Marmalade was a Paul Aden hosta.

Bob Solberg introduced (and patented) Orange Marmalade. It came up in our conversation at the convention last year. Note the fact that the plant is named after a food. That's Bob's hallmark.
