Where did you see that SSU has no kids? I did a quick search on the AHS database (advanced) and came up with this:

I forgot to mention that, to find out whether a cultivar is a parent, you go to the advanced search page, then scroll down to, well, "Parentage" LOL. Then input the name of the cultivar you're interested in. Don't input it both in the first box (Cultivar Name) and in the Parentage box, else you'll get back a "No Results Found" result. Use just the Parentage box. Hope that helps. :)

My (very humble) opinion is that people should be using the AHS tools and pages far more often than they do. I'm not sure why everyone tends to gravitate to Tinkers only; perhaps it's a matter of familiarity? I'm not sure what that says about AHS in that case! But whenever one has a question about a particular daylily or about daylilies in general, my first thought usually is: why not see whether the answer is to be found with the national daylily organization? At any rate, glad I could help you, dani. You might like to do what I did when I first discovered how useful that database is, and that's play around, especially with the advanced search page, just to see what kinds of things you can come up with. For daylily geeks, that would be considered fun LOL.

Lee Pickles also has a new Spiny Sea Urchin kid. I don't remember its name, but it is a cross of Wonder Of It All and SSU. Spiny is a reluctant pod setter, so most of the kids come from pollen use. I have a few seedlings with SSU as the daddy. I do not recommend it as a parent or as a good garden flower. I've said this before, and have gotten blasted for it, but that's my opnion. Why spend money on it when there are much better quality lavenders and purples out there? By the way, the database program Tinker's does not show all of a daylily's offspring by pollen due to a glitch in the software. This problem surfaced a few years ago when Tinker's switched software, and to my knowledge it has never been remedied.

Gotten blasted? Yikes and ugh. Sorry to hear that....I've read similar things, elsewhere, where someone has mentioned getting blasted for a negative comment on a cultivar or some aspect of daylily hybridizing or selling or something. I guess feelings could get hurt. (Imagine sarcasm when you read that sentence.) OK I'm doing what I wish others wouldn't do, and that's going way off topic (imagine sheepish grin at this point)....Debra maybe you should start a discussion on good purples and lavenders to use? I know I want to collect more in those colors, so I'd be interested in what you & others have to say.

dani, I discovered that through trial and error (to be honest, mostly error LOLOL). That's one reason why I suggested playing around with it. I have to stop posting and just read now, as my 20+ pound cat has his head on my keyboard. (she says, waving good-bye for a while.)

I usually look at the Hortiplex, Daves and Tinkers to get an average of how the flower looks. Not sure why, but the AHS nver crossed my mind! I'm just starting to get serious with my backyard Hybridizing, so it will be a great tool.

Yeah, lets start a thread on that!!! I'd LOVE to see more purples and things with white teeth. I'm a sucker for purples. Yet I hate Barney...

Lynxe thanks for explaining how to use the advanced search to look for parentage. I had no idea it could do that. Now I can use both databases for decisoin making. AHS for data and tinkers or dave's for pics. If only there were more good pics on the AHS database( wistfully twirling hair).

Of course if I'm super interested in a cultivar I search here as well to see if any of you have posted a pic or opinion.

This daylily stuff is just so much fun. Yep I guess I'm a daylily geek too.LOL

Ah, now you've hit the nail on the head so to speak.

The reason I go to Tinkers db first before AHS is because there are more photos and it is easy for me to donate photos of those they don't have. In fact I do that often as I see it as a way to contribute to the "daylily community" at large.

I do recognize that Tinkers is limited, especially on being updated with current releases, so go to AHS for those details.

I've also noted issues with the parentage listings coming back wrong. For example if the plant you are researching has name "wordx" and another plant is "wordx + anotherword" children from both plants will show up if you use the "children" button to see offspring.

I regularly used advanced search options on both db's for doing historical research on regional hybridizers & also for specific plant research.

While I go to Dave's for iris research, I find the advanced search options way more convenient on Tinkers and AHS db.

It's taken my SSU a bit to settle in. This was its best year, this year...and I am probably going to move it...sigh. In my garden, that generally sets things back. I have gotten a few seeds from it...hmmm, I didn't realize I should value them that much...lol.

I hope we don't blast each other. From my perspective, I think it's important to remember that someone's experience is just that...their experience...and may be based on all kinds of factors, not necessarily disclosed.

My understanding is that pictures are being added to the AHS database...one day, hopefully, they'll mostly all be there! I think, then, it'll be the best source.

I didn't know about the advanced search features either, so thanks for that!

Hhhhmmm, well knowing that maybe it takes awhile to settle in will keep me from shovel-pruning it. If I get it, I could put it in a spot where he will have his own space and time to grow! Abd if he's ugly, he can stay there. Maybe that will make him happy? *wink wink*

Hi everybody.

I participated recently in a discussion of purples and posed a question similar to this original thread about CELESTIAL SHORE. Why on earth does it have no children? Its beautiful and performs well for me every year. It also has that nice clean white edge Dani spoke of.

I think that with this one, it was introduced in 2007. Since it usually takes 2 years to get a bloom off a cross, that means that they might be blooming this year or next. So in this case it just might be timing.

Often times hybridizers share pollen looong before a plant is introduced. For instance, Trimmer's PINEAPPLE MOON was introduced in Spring 2008 with Smith's Fall 2008 Patsy Cline genetics. ORANGE BLOSSOM TRAIL followed in 2009. They (hybridizers) share with each other long before we ever see the plants. And many hybridizers have perfected the 9 month bloom. If anyone has any tips or tricks on how to do that in the mid atlantic... Im all ears.
