Can I still plant my daylilies in the ground?

I cannot believe that I'm writting this but last night our temp went down to 37 degrees this is not normal for us this early. It warms up to high 60's to 70 degrees right now. So I'm wondering how my three new daylilies will take if I plant them in the ground. Forecase for the next week shows lows in the mid to high 40's at night with day time temps in the lower 70's.

This is Jan. weather for us with the lows in the 30's at night. BTW I'm in Texas

I really think that I would pot them up and not put them in the ground now.The cooler thmps will slow their recovery and they may not get a good enough root system going before you get winter.They need 6-8 weeks before frost and freezing.

Well, not to be contrary, but I don't think your ground is frozen. I don't have good luck in overwintering daylilies in pots...remember all those stories from folks this past spring? You're warmer, so it might be different for you.

If it were me, (and...laugh...it IS me because I am still planting) I'd plant them. Give them really good mulch.

It is Labor Day Weekend, and I am still planting daylilies, or should I say: moving them. At this point, I am no longer trying to make major divisions, but I am still dividing the big ones (just not into as small a division as I would in the spring). I use plenty of compost around the roots to give them a head start. I will also cover them with straw for this first winter, to prevent heaving. I've done this in the past -- actually planted right up until the end of September -- and the plants did just fine. Hope this helps. MacThayer

Plants found for sale now in bloom will be greenhouse or florist's hydrangeas. And they are often (even typically) sold without identifying names. It is very difficult to assign a specific cultivar name to them as the greenhouse forcing process often involves complicated procedures to modify flower color and bloom size - what you see now is not necessarily what you will get planted in the ground. Most macrophyllas are root hardy to zone 5 although they will be damaged by winter cold unless they are protected. Often, greenhouse hydrangeas do not show the same degree of hardiness as those grown naturally for the landscape. Growing it in a container may be a good alternative, as it can be more easily moved indoors for winter protection. Hydrangeas do not make good houseplants - ones sold like this are generally intended as temporary flowering plants. If you do grow it on in a container, it will need to be hardened off or acclimatized to the outdoors before you can move it to a porch or other location. And winter protection can be as simple as just moving the container to an unheated basement or insulated garage -- somewhere cool (some freezing OK) so the plant can go through a normal period of dormancy. Bringing it into your living room or elsewhere under normal comfortable living conditions for the winter will alter the natural process and can create problems.

Peonies usually do well when planted in the fall. I have moved some as late as the end of October, so you should be O.K. in your zone. I do not have lots of experience with roses - last year was my first. I had planted out four plants (from cuttings) in late summer, of which three survived, but by November 7, I had no room for the remaining four plants, so I sunk the pots in the ground and covered them with leaves. They survived the winter and bloomed this summer. I find sinking pots in the ground and mulching a good way of overwintering plants if I'm not sure they will survive the transplant shock. Burnt Ridge is a grower and Raintree is for the most part a middleman. Their value is their large selection. However, I have had repeated quality control issues with them over a long period. When an item is offered by both and still in stock I would always try to get it from Burnt Ridge first. Some of their plants can be dinky but others are quite nice. When I was on a tour there some years ago I was impressed by their approach to production of field stock and the results they were getting (as well as their seemingly extensive collection of chestnut and walnut trees, something on a par with the National Collection system plantings of garden plants they have in England - maybe I'm wrong but surely Burnt Ridge has been growing way more kinds of these than they sell).

As you know... I am no expert as this is only my second year with DLs - but I planted some yesterday. For me, I KNEW they wouldn't survive in pots. I am just way to busy to remember to water them. Besides, I already have a pot ghetto going and I am determined to get rid of it! Really, when I planted yesterday afternoon the ground was nice and warm from all the sun we still get. Granted, as gonegardening says... I have mulch on my beds and I am sure that keeps the warmth in the ground. The night time temps are colder, but the ground is definately not frozen. We'll talk about it today over coffee!
