Hosta Shopping on a Rainy Day

Headed south to Romence Gardens in Portage and picked up some hostas today. A few of these have been on my list for over a year, a couple were impulse buys. I think I've filled up the living room already since I'll be hauling all the other ones in off the porch tomorrow.

'StirFry' has 25 pips? Awesome!! I thought mine were doing good with up to 9 pips. But not 'Stir Fry'.

Know the feeling, flattened wallet, but happy! Went to a local vendor on Saturday to buy one Hosta; 'Liberty', came home with 16, plus some other plants. In addition to 'Liberty', purchased 'Old Glory'(2), 'Radio Waves' (2), 'Blue Mouse Ears" (2), 'Blue Shadows', 'High Society', 'Bitsy Gold', 'X-Rated', 'Winter Lightning' (2), 'SIlver Threads & Golden Needles', 'Cameo' and 'Tea & Crumpets'. Most had multiple divisions and I will probably derive about 30 plants from the haul. Many of my recent purchases have been minatures, since I'm doing a lot of troughs, dish gardens and bonsai with Hostas. I can also tuck those into my small rock garden. Looked for 'Peanut', but he had sold out. Guess it's got to be TC for those, if I'm to get any this year, at a reasonable price. Good luck with yours! Hope you are having some rain. Curious where in NJ are you?? I have been enjoying this Spring and the fairly regular rains most of last year too (except late in the year). I am in central NJ (not far from Flemington) and there were several hot summers where rain seemed to avoid us.............often going a little south, north or west. Those drought years played havoc on the Hostas and I had several large, established clumps dissapear. Hopefully the regular rain continues. Very nice Hosta you have!

utog..thank you!..I have lots of plans to make it look "finished"..if there is such a thing..if only I was able to move heavy logs, rocks and pots myself..but I need my husband..he's a fabulous helper but he's not always ready to start working when I am..😂

Wow, they have leafed out hostas for sale in zone 5, and we will have 2 nights with frost on Monday and Tuesday in my zone 5. You have to watch out! But we all thank you to keep the economy accelerating!

Very good haul, indeed! I placed my first hosta order this morning. I'm going to try great restraint this year to not blow all of my money on plants. There are a few heuchera/ella I want to try out, but other than that, I'm going to keep as best as I can from buying more plants. Ultimately, I know I'll fail. lol! I ordered three hostas from Hallson's, they are: Spartacus (to replace the one that has decided to be a mini), Key Lime Pie (McTavish's photos were the inspiration for this one), and Stirfry (to see if it does better than my Bridegroom).

So it appears there are 2 different Romence Gardens in Michigan? I thought that was a great looking list so I googled Romence and started looking at their hosta list, and many of the ones you bought weren't on their list. Then I realized their website said they are in Grand Rapids, and you mentioned Portage.

So I rechecked Google and found a different Romence Gardens and they have a much more extensive list. Even so, 5 or 6 of the ones you bought aren't on their list either, so they must have a lot that aren't listed.

I am planning a nursery road trip to Michigan this year, so are either or both highly recommended? I was also planning to visit Rob's Lakeside Acres, Gee Farms, Hallson Gardens, and Arrowhead Alpines. Any others I need to visit?

I highly recommend Romence Gardens in Portage. And yes, they have more hostas available than those that are on their web-site. They up-size their hostas in bigger pots as they grow and are too busy to divide them so you'll pay the same price for the variety no matter how many eyes it has.

The other place I would recommend is K Gardens in Byron Center, just southwest of Grand Rapids. They have about 800 varieties of hostas. I have bought many hostas from them that had over 20 eyes.

I stop by Romence Gardens in Grand Rapids when I need a hosta fix on a Sunday. They are the only nursery in our area that's open on Sundays.

When you visit Chris at Hallsons, let him pick out a hosta for you! He's picked out several for me that I never would have on my own! Chris also has hostas in his nursery that aren't on his web-site.

I haven't been to Rob's Lakeside Acres yet, but have an order in that we are going to pick up instead of having him ship to us. I'm looking forward to meeting Rob!

If you want to travel all the way north into Michigan, there is Cedar Hedge Gardens in Interlochen. I haven't been there yet, but they have over 800 varieties plus 4 acres of display gardens.
