Hi Jeff,

Lacunosa is a good choice. I would put it in an east window - if you can hang it right in the window, that would be idea, but it will do ok to hang to the side, too. I put little teacup hooks (that's what I call them...) in the center of my woodwork directly above each window so that every window has a plant centered right in front of (and practically against) the glass. Hoyas really like that few hours of morning sun they get in an east window.

There's no need to prune lacunosa unless you want to start cuttings. Just let it grow. Mine hangs about 2' out of the pot.

Your soil mix sounds fine. Lacunosa doesn't like to get too dry, so water it as it begins to dry out. Mine gets watered about once a week, but it's in a north window. In an east window, it might need to be watered a little more often.

Good luck with your first Hoya. And watch out for the addiction that comes with falling in love with your first Hoya!

I am also thinking of getting some serpens as well. Do they have similar/same requirements? My window has blinds but at least now I know where I'll put it, just on the side of the window.

And Denise, do you have a pic of the 'teacup hooks'?

I've put a link at the bottom to a link at Lowe's. They're a common little hook. With most Hoyas, I use a few links of chain to bring the pot a little lower in the window. I buy chain that's meant for hanging light fixtures, and it comes in a package that's a few feet long. I pry the links apart to make the lengths I want.

As for serpens, I've grown it (gave mine away to a friend) and it's a cutie. It's a little more succulent, so can be allowed to dry out a bit between waterings.

I have had a lacunosa for several years. When it arrived from Logees, I put it in a 4 inch pot and it's been there ever since. It has not grown excessively, in fact one stem died. It has bloomed several times also. Lately the leaves are looking more yellow and I'm worried that it's in a decline and I don't know what to do! I have fed it regularly with Gardens Alive for houseplants, at least three times a year. I'm wondering if I should put it in a larger pot with more peat? I thought hoyas didn't like to be repotted so have been reluctant to try that. The mix I potted it with was 50/50 perlite and peat moss. Maybe it needs more feeding with something else? Any advice would be appreciated.

I avoid peat at all costs! You have to repot every year to 18 months w/peat as it breaks down and turns "sour" which is hard on your plants. They stop growing or don't flower. I use coir (which you can get online) and perlite (I'd prefer pumice, but it's hard to come by and expensive around here...)
