hoya kerrii

Hello all. I just received a new Hoya I am so impressed. Thae plant arrived today in super shape. It is over a foot tall and looks to be in excellent shape. I have it temporarily planted in common soil but will go after the proper soil tomorrow.

This is also called "Sweetheart Hoya" due to the Heart shaped leaves.

If anyone has any knowledge first hand they would like to share, please do.

Hi Betsy,

Where did you get your Kerrii? I want to order one, but don't want to order anymore from Glasshouseworks until I get the order I've already placed. I want to see if all the plants look good and are healthy, e.t.c before I spend more hard earned $ with them.

Pug, I wonder if your kerrii could be one of the other clones - "hairy kerrii" or the veined clone. Can you give us a closeup of a leaf? I suppose that might make a difference in the color of the sap. I have all three, but hairy kerrii and veined kerrii haven't bloomed for me yet. I think they both will this year because they've both set peduncles. If they do, I can compare flowers... I was whacking away at my kerrii a couple days ago - it's gotten so large and out of control, and I'm selling Hoyas this year (mostly to my cactus club...) to try to supplement our "budget deficit"... Anyway, I found one vine that had three opening peduncles on it, so left that one on for now. They're open now and no signs of any nectar at all yet. I'll have to pay attention and see how long it takes before they produce the nectar. It's not something I ever paid attention to before... Denise in Omaha

Hi Ian, Had you ever changed the earlier mix? That may have been a problem there too. It certainly looks much better, great save. Pardon me, but why would you want to cut this stem? Especially since Pepe says he can see a peduncle on its tip (which I can't see from here). Wouldn't you want to give that a chance to bloom? I know I would. I have found these long, crazy Kerrii stems are pliable when young & can be lightly curled, say around a trellis or wire hoop. Tho' that may cause it to bleed white sap, looks like Elmer's glue. A spray of water will stop the white sap from leaking out further.

I bought a Hoya Kerri plant about 4 years ago - it was just a leaf in a pot (one of those Valentine's specials). The leaf remained the same for about 6 months. There was no sign of growth above the soil. I was eventually curious un-potted it and was surprised to see that it had a strong root system going. I then checked on the net and found info that you can only expect it to start showing signs of growth above soil level after about a year. I repotted it into a small clay pot and after about 6 months a small shoot appeared, which then grew steadily and at about 2 years it flowered for the first time. My plant is now about a metre long creeping up a wall, winding itself along a wire i had suspended to help it grow vertically. Maybe I was just lucky....I don't know. I did buy a second plant in its leaf cutting form about a year ago (this one was varieagted). It died after a few months!

To clarify, that's not a Hoya plant, that's a single leaf. As Pepe suggests above, w/out a portion of the stem attached, it's unlikely to grow into a plant. It may grow lots of roots, but it's most unlikely to grow into a plant, sorry. I hadn't heard of them being sold in the Green Sponge, which sounds like what Florists in America refer to as 'oasis', a medium often used in vases as a base for cut flowers.

I find that Hoya kerrii ("Heart Leaf Hoya") is best watered when it gets a little dry. How often depends on your soil mix. I would just feel the soil and if it feels somewhat dry, water - but be sure to empty any overflow. Hoyas don't like "wet feet."

When you start to see flower buds, put it in a place where you don't care if the dark red sappy flowers drip. They make a terrible mess! I have mine on a top shelf in my GH and I've often, while on my little step-stool watering other plants, gotten that aweful goo in my hair. Yuck - what a sticky mess! But they're beautiful and worth the trouble...

Update, I have a flower beginning to bloom and will find a tray to set under it just in case. I will get a photo for you and post it. The leaves leave a lot to be desired as far a color goes. I have 2 other Hoyas and they both have nice greenery but this is paled in color.
Darned if I know what it should look like.

Yes, I think people buy the H. kerrii for it's leaf "shape" instead of it's color. Now the variegated one is prettier, but it still is not shiney if that is what you like. They also leave a lot of space between leaves once they get growing it seems.

Other than the flower, it is a fairly ugly duck compared to my others.

I think it's lovely, BetsyBr! But I'm a 'foliage fanatic'.

Congrats on an upcoming bloom on a new plant!

I have the variegated one, and agree with others who've posted here that it's a stinker....never did get the green one,and have wanted one, so I'm curious, too, as to where you obtained it.
Would you mind emailing me with that info, too?

Hi Betsy-My hoya from Logees is about a year old and is sporting 2 penduncles about to bloom. It was a slow grower until about three months ago-then just went crazy. I don't know how I'll handle it when I have to bring it in.

In NJ we have too many critters flying around. I keep them all inside and avoid the hastle come Fall.
