Mine just grew it's third node, so it's still small. Will be curious to read what others have to say!

I have a fairly large Imperialis not in the best condition but no flowers.
It's in part shade, it does not like to dry out too much.

I don't have this species because I just don't have the space it needs but I would guess that your plant might want more light. The extra energy that is needed to produce such large flowers is probably just not possible in a somewhat shaded position. I don't know the light limit for this one but generally the larger species tend to climb quite high and then flower on the more exposed/brighter portions of the vine, you won't find the peduncles forming down near the base where the plant is shaded. I have read that it can take a few years to flower from a cutting but increasing the light slowly can hasten blooming. Just like orchids in nature you can find beautiful lush plants but without the proper light they may never flower, it's all a waiting game but with Hoyas like this they go to the light and when they get enough the bloom.

I have one and it grows peduncles and tries to bud but they always yellow.Its not very healthy right now so I am thinking about cutting it up and will try to re root. This time I will put it a self watering pot.This one like water in the growing season.

My imperialis is realtively young, and it unfortunately took a downturn right at the end of winter. I chopped it up and restarted it. The new plant seems to be doing fine so far. In fact, I'm finding a bit of new growth on some of it, so I'm pretty secure it's going to make it.

I think Mike's right (though I can't speak directly from experience...) From everything I've read, it needs a fair amount of light. I hope to get blooms on mine one day, too!

Thanks for all the responses and advise. I might have to put this one outside and slowly acclimate it to a little sun, I just have to keep an eye out for snails that come out in the summer. They've eaten some of my hoya leaves before that I had under some palm trees.

I've also noticed that the leaves are very delicate and sensitive, the slightest touch can cause the leaves to bleed...the ladder trellis I'm using doesn't help.

Cindy, what type of light do you give yours? At least you've gotten peduncles.How long have you had it before it started getting peduncles?

I guess most of us has some issues with this one, I'm in good company.

In the winter I have this hoya very close to my grow lights and it sits on a heat mat,It likes heat and moister.In the spring and summer I have it growing south with 50% shade cloth. It started to grow peduncles after one year.

After about 6 years mine finally bloomed last year. I'm hoping to see more blooms this year.

Pug you should try copper strips around your pots to prevent snail damage. I have also heard that snail bait works pretty well.

Mike, what are copper strips? I don't think I've ever heard of them. I have to be careful about using bait, I have a dog and heard that they "love" the taste of them.

You can get thin copper strips or copper tape and slugs and snails can not cross it because it generates an electrical charge when they touch it. There are different products out there but this is to give you an idea. Look for copper tape and put it around the top rim of pots. The mesh would work well but looks less attractive.
