Cool Jan. . . it looks like there's going to be a bunch of flowers. .
I have a small pach. and it's just sitting there doing nothing. I've had it since last year and so far I'm not impressed with it. I read they like to be kept on the dry side, which I do. Is that true with yours as well? Any tips on growing this type?
Maid, thanks! I love my pachycladas, I water well and then let it dry out completely before I water again. The leaves are very succulant, flowers are very fragrant. I'll up date in photos when it get ready to bloom.
Jan, that's beautiful...guess what? The cutting I got from you last summer has a bud! Will update "if" it doesn't blast. I think its the regular color w/out the red.
Hi My all time fav hoya is pachyclada. Its easy to grow and flower and it smells great.Congrats on the blooms, one of mine just finished but I should see more come Aug.
I hope that my plant develops a peduncle this summer. Seeing photos on the forum of this Hoya in bloom convinced me I should have one for myself. My plant has three sets of leaves so it's still small but I hear they bloom early.
Pug, I am so happy yours are budding. Congrats! Cindy, I have to say pachy is one of my favorite hoyas. Mike, yes the do flower very young age. It may surprise you one day soon.
Beautiful Jan!!! I absolutely love my Pachyclada (I have the regular one)! I got it in the fall and it did nothing. Just as Spring was approaching, it started to get new leaves in sets of three. Every time I get three and they harden, I cut off one of the original leaves because just about every one of them had major flaws. I think the flowers on this hoya are really pretty; have no idea what they smell like. Cannot wait to see the flowers!!!
Hey Maid, when I was whining about my Pachyclada not doing anything, wasn't it yours that had sent out a long vine? Maybe someone else?
Tish, No unfortunatley it wasn't me. I wish it was. . . I was hoping come spring I would see something, but so far nada. . zip. . as a matter of fact one of the two is looking very dehydrated, I mat try putting it in a baggie with some moss.
You have both then Maid? I don't know what is wrong with them. I do mine just like Jan--wait until it is completely dry or just about "dusty", as you would say, teheehee, and then water thoroughly. It gets full sun in front of the window, no sheer, no nothing. The glass does have some tinting, but that is pretty much standard in today's windows. Gosh, I hope they take off for you!!!
That would be me that has one that sent out this long stem. Someone on another forum suggested that it might not be getting enough light so I moved it and now it is getting these little nubbies all over so I guess he was right. This is a little dark. I moved it to a couple different places but they all came out kinda dark. Anyhow this is how it is looking now.
Nice, Jan! I just noticed mine has it's first buds as well! Oddly I didn't even recognize it as being a peduncle - thought it was the end of vine because there is a leaf right at the end of it! Will post a picture with my other buds.
Mike, mine has done nothing as well for almost freakin' year - until now putting on buds. I was feeling the same as you!
Hoya plachyclada needs bright light to grow compact. I grow mine in an unshaded southern window and it is fine there, could probably take full sun outside as well if acclimated properly. I am pretty sure that this species will still flower in less light but it will not look like the nice compact plant you see in photos, then again with age the plants tend to sprawl anyways. You could always take cuttings from the leggy part if there are leaves or try air layering that part of the stem. I sometimes loop the stems of Hoyas around and pin them to the potting mix so that they root if I find they make the plant look messy.
Half way down the linked page there is a great photo of this species.
Hi I wanted to show my pachyclada. The buds on my plant are red.But I see jans buds are green and most of the photos that I have looked at are also green.
Wow Cindy, that is a handsome looking pach. It looks as tho you will be enjoying flowers for quite some time, by the looks of all those buds forming. Nice photo.
Thanks for sharing. . .
Mike, I think I will put mine in my only south facing window as well. I was thinking about that earlier and thought maybe it was too much. But very few of my plants can take that much light, if it likes it there it can have that window all to itself. . .
Something's gotta give on this little (still) guy.
Cindy, that is a really good looking Pachyclada. I wish I would have been able to find the one with the red center. Just beautiful! Thanks for the picture.
Holy smokes Cindy!!! How long have you had it and how big was it when you got it? That is magnificent!!! I wonder if anyone else with a Pachyclada with a red center has had flowers yet and if their buds were red. They look like purple berries to me--just beautiful...
Cindy, I don't believe that your plant is H. pachyclada. I believe that H. pachyclada has white flowers. Your plant has H. pachy in it, but it's not the straight species. Christine Burton wrote an article on the confusion in identifying H. pachyclada and the very similar, Hoya subquintuplinervis, in one of her PS - The Hoyan articles.
Here is a quote from the article:
"Question 2: But, doesnÂt Hoya subquintuplinervis have flowers that are red in the center, or is it Hoya pachyclada that has the red in the center? --- The same people who asked Question #1.
Answer: Neither of them have red in the center. To the naked eye, the flowers of both look almost identical, but under the lens of a microscope, they are very different. The only similar hoya with red in the center of the flower with which I am familiar is a Michael Miyoshira hybrid, which he said was a cross of Hoya pachyclada X Hoya sp. Bangkok #4. I believe that it was actually a cross of Hoya subquintuplinervis X Hoya sp. Bangkok #4. I say that because of the shape of the leaves and the fact that everyone, at the time Michael made that cross, thought that Hoya subquintuplinervis was Hoya pachyclada."
I have been waiting for my H. pachyclada to bloom so I will know if I have the plant labeled correctly or not.
I have the entire article linked below, for anyone that's interested.
Stunning photo, BTW! I kind of hope my plant has the red in the flowers because it's beautiful. Mike
Jan, that's wonderful...that's a lot of buds in one plant. Enjoy them when they bloom! Still waiting for my buds to open from the Pachyclada cutting I got from you...I will post when it opens.
