Groundcover around Viburnum

I have a planter along my back fence that is roughly 60 ft wide by 10 ft deep. I have planted Viburnum odoratissimum along the entire fence, along with two magnolias planted towards the front of the planter. I currently have pine bark in the planter. I was thinking it might look neat to replace the pine bark with a groundcover that would quickly fill in the area. Is this a wise move? Would this potentially kill the other plants? Am I crazy to try and fill an area that large with a groundcover?

What groundcover plants would you suggest? I'm in Jacksonville, FL and this area does get a good amount of sun each day. I would love something that flowers and adds a lot of color.
