Hosta website for i.d., and To divide or not to divide?

I've read that hostas need to be divided, or is this a fallacy? What is the concept behind this?

My neighbor had large beautiful mature hostas (from the previous owner who cared for his garden religiously), and new neighbors definitely not avid gardeners to put it nicely, and they decided to divide them because they are "too large".

Isn't the goal to have large mature hostas??????

On top of that, after dividing them, they planted four in the place of one large one, and in two years they will be hideously too close.

Just wondering if it's necessary to divide. My mature hostas have grown successfully and vigorously year after year without being divided.

Also, is there a hosta site you can recommend to help identify a hosta? I want a hosta plantaginea (sp?), but I have something that is either the same or similar, so I don't want to make the mistake of purchasing something I have (MIL gave it to me). My home computer is in repair, so I don't have the means to upload the pic right now from my laptop.
