mushrooms in beds. be concerned??
Comments (5)Wood ends up as a mulch here because it takes an extra year or so to break down after I add it in a layer of compost. Like digdirt said, fungus and wood go together. I got the fruiting heads after a few weeks of laying out a new bed for flowers, and the thin white stuff came in the same bed after about two more months. There's been fungi in there all this time, growing and spreading and doing other general fungus-y things. Oh, also had a slimy one that glowed an intense yellow when hit with a LED flashlight after dark, but no pic. It's always with the top shredded wood layer. Go figure. The big box boys need to come up with a Morel inoculant, or Destroying Angel, depending on how one treated their customer service reps on the latest call......See Moremushrooms in the lawn
Comments (8)The infestation of mushrooms indicates an imbalance of soil microorganisms allowing the fungus to dominate. I would top dress the lawn with compost and apply aerated compost tea regularly. This will protect your lawn since it isn't yet infested with the fungal overgrowth next door. The spores are in your area though so you will want to deal with this as soon as possible. I personally would not recommend fungicide but if it is used, it should be followed by compost and compost tea to inoculate the soil with beneficial microbes. You can't overdose with compost tea so if you are inclined, make some and apply it every week after mowing. Also make sure you leave the clippings on the lawn so they can feed the soil microbes. This will help with the lawn health. Here is a link that might be useful: How To Make Aerated Compost Tea...See MoreHelp! My puppy loves eating mushrooms!
Comments (1)Hard to TRAIN him from a habit that may cost him his life? I wouldn't think so. Perhaps it's time for an obedience class so that you can learn some simple training techniques. Training need not be harsh. In the meantime, of course you must leash him everytime he is outside. Only those times when you can do a thorough mushroom search before he goes outside to play, should he be allowed to run around off leash and then he should be watched carefully. You can't really kill off the mushrooms. They are merely temperary fruiting bodies of an extensive underground system that is busy decomposing organic matter. Is this a new construction site? Have you put down a bunch of new mulch? Is the site heavily wooded?...See MoreAlberta Mushrooms
Comments (16)The first one is Amanita muscaria -- hallucinogenic but also quite poisonous, even fatal. Rumoured to be the mushroom from Alice in Wonderland "one side will make you grow taller, the other side will make you grow shorter" because of its effect of making the user feel either very large or very small. The second two shots are I think a mature version of another Amanita muscaria. Last is shaggy mane, edible as others have pointed out, never tried it myself since I'm grossed out how they turn into black slime when over-mature. Only wild mushroom I've tried is morels -- collected a few on a mushroom-hunting course at the Devonian botanic garden some years ago. They ripen early, around mid-May or so. There is another kind that grows in the woods and is quite edible... can't remember the name... red cap, I think. A guy I worked with used to collect them at field sites in the forested areas of Alberta in summer. I was too spooked to ever try them but he loved them....See Morejimster
