Hosta Growing Problem

Last fall ( Late August ) I divided 3 very large Hosta plants.

I replanted all of them and everyone of them regenerated, completely leafed out and flourished.

Now it is Spring and none of them are coming out of the ground

yet. Other Hosta plants that I did not divide are all now coming up. Any advice appreciated. I'm thinking I might have dug them out and divided them to early in the fall. Help please! I'm wondering if there is anything I should do to help them along?

how deep did you replant them

and did you do it soon enough for them readjust before winter..

and i hope you did not throw fertilizer in the hole in fall ...

and what hosta?? .. anything foo foo.. or just one of the old standards ...

my best bet is that you planted then too deep.. and but for the freak warm weather.. they just havent worked their way to the surface in what is still MARCH!!!

in a normal year.. you wouldnt be seeing any of them.. for another few weeks ...

If you gently rub your fingers around where they are supposed to be, you might be able to feel little points of developing shoots. OR, as Ken says, just wait. You said, "I replanted all of them and everyone of them regenerated, completely leafed out and flourished." So unless critters came and gobbled up the roots, they are probably just fine. Soon...soon.

Wow, this board is really buzzing! So many comments in such a short time period from such helpful gardeners! Thanks, all, for responding and for the warm welcome. I'm in NJ. I actually have that in my profile, and I'm unsure as to why it's not showing up on my posts. (I don't see preferences to show/hide it.) jadie88, I was searching for variegated Solomon's Seal last summer but had no luck finding it. And this year I decided I want to try red astilbe with some lighter-colored hostas to brighten up some areas between bushes. I don't have a lot of money to spend because I'm starting my raised-bed vegetable garden this year. But I do still need to add to my gardens out front. I planted them last spring after buying my house in the fall. The front does get sun, but it's rather uneven; the right side gets more than the left due to the sizes of the trees in front. I didn't realize how much of a difference there was until I saw how the plants/flowers were growing. The impatients on the right side seemed to triple in size, while the left side did not get much larger at all! So now I must forget about having a symmetrical look out front and get to replanting. ken_adrian, I'm not sure what I was thinking! Of course, more hostas! I can't wait to read through this forum to get more ideas and become more educated on hostas! (My mom had hostas when I was growing up, but she was amazed as well when I showed her photos of some of the varieties!)

They could be planted too deeply. They could be in direct competition with tree roots. They could be getting peed on by dogs. They could be getting too little water. They could be surrounded by landscape fabric/plastic. They could be planted at the base of a black walnut tree. Hard to say.

welcome.. great to see some new names .... just guessing here.. if you already have the remay .. why not put that on the fence .... if you have an old screen from the house... you can use that .... i would use 50% shade cloth if available ... but.. hosta are only shade tolerant.. they will do just fine in more sun ... especially spring sun which isnt as hot as summer ... the bigger concern is that the seller had them in shade.. and now you are blasting them into the sun .... why not just pot them ... keep them protected.. and plant them out when the perennials get high enough.. hardening them off to the sun prior ... SG is a plantaginea.. and can probably take a lot of sun ... with enough water .... but TB has a waxy coating that wont like summer heat & sun ... all hosta grow more vigorously in sun .. but they get pretty ugly later in summer.. but next year the plant will be bigger than if it were in total shade ... good luck ken

Sorry I haven't been on the Internet for awhile - busy as a bee. HVX continues to be a problem. I only bought one new one this year, and so far it doesn't appear to be afflicted. The most vulnerable hosta appears to be Striptease, along with Sum and Substance. My S&S was purchased about 6 years ago, so I don't think I will have a problem with it. Some of my hostas are showing signs of leaf burn this year that they have never succombed to before. I can't figure out why, since they have been in place for quite a few years now. This crazy weather we've been having could be the culprit. Cold then hot, then cold, then hot. Hostas are just the most carefree perennials, that it stuns me to be having problems with them. If you suspect HVX, don't take a chance. I would yank them out, put them in a pot and take them to your nursery where you purchased them. I would then point the nursery manager to the hostas still in stock and tell them what the problem is and ask for substitute perennials. If they don't listen to you, call the County Extension office and inform them of the problem. We certainly don't want this to get out of control. Susan

Not everything here in the middle of Illinois is up yet. It is mainly most of the old standards that are still sleeping except for lancifolia. Out of 200 varieties in the ground, about 50 are still not poking up. Some just like to sleep in late.

you should wait until you see them.. before you go digging .. but a little archeology work might give you some facts.. rather than speculation ...

I get impatient and feel around where they should be, sometimes, and NO hostas! Then I get worried. Only to see them come up in a week 6 inches from where I KNEW they were......and I marked them, and everything! And I can just hear them snickering......
