Could Yoy Do It With Hosta Seeds?

I just read an article in a gradening magazine saying to cut open an milk jug, put potting soil in, add seeds, close up cut with clear tape, top left open I think, then put jug out in a sunny area ,leave it, and you have your own little green house.

I've left out most of the article but the jest of it was to do this in the winter and let nature do the rest. Come spring the seeds will sprout and you have plants to transplant into your garden.

The hosta seeds wouldn't be blown away or eating by birds and critters like self sowing.

What do you think oh mighty hosta minds? ;0)

why not.. they are hosta....

put the seeds in the crack of the driveway ...

they don't care ...

too hot would be counterproductive, as summer rolls along...

Hi Ken, Thanks for your input. One of the problems with my mat is it doesn't have a thermostat. The instructions said it would warm the soil area 10-20 degrees fahrenheit over the ambient temperature. Apparently that was too much for my seeds since they were already in a warm room. We have a discussion going on over at the hosta seedling forum and it sounds like my problem is not uncommon. A few people lost seed using the mats. It seems that the people who have success with the mats regulate the temps with a thermostatic controller. Frankly I wish I wouldn't have used the mat in the first place or researched the pros and cons first. I grew seeds successfully for two years without a mat and decided to use one this year to speed up the growing process. It does sound like they can be used successfully in a controlled environment. I am too chicken to try again :) I just started round 2 today! No mat this time. haha!

I once grew hostas from seeds bought from Thompsons, collected some from my own blue ones and did not label them. I grew the seeds under light in the basement over winter, and planted them out after acclimatizing. That went well, I gave away some 3 year old plants. Some blue ones are self-seeding, some seedlings growing in a gravel path. Now I think the lower leaved ones are Elegans, the tall upright ones are Blue Umbrellas. Then there are large puckered blue-green ones, might be Elegans. I would suggest that you label all seed-grown hostas to avoid future noids. Bernd

Got a newsletter today from Made In The Shade hostas. I'm going to quote, because I don't want to mess it up. [quote] This year we also have the perfect setup for Southern Blight - lots of rain that is followed immediately by hot temperatures. If you see hosta petioles that flop over at the base, it is likely the result of a fungus called Southern Blight. The fungus eats away the tissue at the base of the petiole so the petiole pulls away easily from the clump. You may also notice beige colored "mustard seeds" at the base of the clump and a white thread like mycelium. Quick action can save the clump. Apply a fungicide product that contains tebuconazole as a soil drench. The product is contained in a number of Bayer fungicide products that are commonly available at box stores, hardware stores and garden centers. [end quote] Thought this might be helpful. Don't think I have southern blight just yet, but it is bound to come sooner or later.

Connie, I second the wintersowing forum. I'm trying this for the first time this year, I'm hoping it works as good as they say. The heck of it is, I didn't get roped into that forum until February, and I didn't bother to harvest any of my hosta seeds last year...

I like using the clear hinged trays from the salad bar at my local grocery. They make wonderful little green houses and you can prop them open a little when the seeds have sprouted.

And you do get used to the odd looks when checking ot with a stack of 10 empty trays LOLOLOL!

I had a thread about this back in January I think.

I am currently trying it with some Hosta seeds, but I have them in my garage. I wanted them to sprout earlier than if they were outside. I got anxious after reading all the other posts about everyone else's sprouting seeds, lol.

I like the idea about the clear deli trays, Alexa. It would be easier to see if anything is sprouting that way too.

I planted mine on Feb. 15. So far there is only one very tiny thread-like sprout in one of the jugs. Maybe it still isn't quite warm enough in the garage.

My computer had a meltdown and I had to get a new one so I'm just now getting back to post. I don't have any seeds to plant so will have to wait till next winter to try it.

Since we are gone part of the winter I can't start seeds in the house so I was hoping some of you had tried this method before and could tell me it worked fine.

This is my first year wintersowing, and I already have 23 things germinating, but not my hosta container. One of the things I want the most are the hostas, so I thought I would pop on here and ask two questions....when do they normally germinate? and I still have more seeds, do they need cold strat?
