First Hosta Shipment has Arrived!

The first shipment of Hostas came late last week, some Mini's from a Mid-Atlantic region grower. Tiny little eyes emerging from the potting mix, but are continuing to elongate very rapidly. Some sunshine, water and liquid fertilizer and they should be fully developed within a couple of weeks.

Had sticker shock when I saw the UPS charges for ground shipping. Could have been half that much via USPS.

Have a shipment coming from Naylor Creek and they do use USPS, thankfully.

I canceled 2 orders of trees from the West coast, because the shipping charges were exorbitant.

Much lower fuel prices did not affect shipping charges, which went the opposite direction!

Yes, I know what you mean. I'm on the West coast and have the same $$ problem with shipments from the East coast. Good ole' Post Office gets hostas to me from Naylor in two days, and from Hallson's in 3 days. Probably the other way around for you? The shortest UPS time was 4 days, and they don't deliver on Saturdays.

Hi Linda Again, great advice. progress report: I've started a bunch of rooted leaves in tiny 1.5" pots with perlite in the bottom, a bit of soil mix on top of that. I forgot to get wicks. I still have not figured out what to use for wicks. Once the leaves send up babies and I move them to 2" pots, I will get wicks. They are all under domes. My hardware store had domed trays. I potted up the "leggy" plants from 2" to 3", but again, forgot the wicks, and put in a layer of perlite. So I guess I will be top watering. With all that legginess, there is plenty of room. i moved all the new plants that were not leggy but not in regular soil that came from a different grower that I had put into 4" pots down to 3" pots and they are in the warm, humid bathroom under fluourescent lights. I had ordered 3" pots from a grower. Also, a fertilizer to add to water for rooting. I read the ingredients on the orchid food, it contains urea, so I went back to violet food for the AVs in bloom. I gave away another batch of plantlets that had grown into decent size plants, all potted up into the right size pots. (I had to move some down from 4" to 3") There is a batch of plantlets coming up in 1/5" pots What's next are the plants that have suckers on them or a second crown to divide. Thanks guys! No, really...the truck had left the building already...the flats had already been placed, just not a single plant was missing from them. Really! Serendipity Acres is the name of my farm/acreage. It is named after my awesome rescued Aussie....this is her famous half-smile or sneer (not easy to photograph...lol!) She pretty much "owns" the place: I do have aspirations of turning a portion of the land into a botanical/species garden...am well on my way, too. Also, I want it to be a registered butterfly way station....getting there! I am fairly new to C&S, but have been an outdoor gardener for most of my life... In about 3 years, my gardens should definitely be "something to see"...but I focus on a more naturalized appearance than geometric and forced. This can actually be more difficult, but I am hoping it will be worth it! Anyway....the little Aloe is, in fact, A. zanzibar...probably a more compact version of A. juvenna (have that, too). I've always meant to purchase from him. However, these are not grafted plants that I can see and I had at one time messaged him and he did not answer me. Therefore, if they are seedlings, it will be just like when we all plant our seeds, you may get a color similar to the mother plant he calls 'Fadia' but then again you might get a regular pink flower from them also. A friend bought 10 plants from him and all turned out to have pink flowers. Just an FYI...

Plum Perfect is divine! I have more than one, you will love it. I am just now growing Wedding Bells and Quicksilver - blooms on Quicksilver are really pretty. Chamblees is for sale, but no buyers yet. That property is really expensive, right on main highway. Heirloom Roses looked at it but property too expensive. That would have been super to have them here! I asked again this week about closing, no plans as of now. But I am sure it is coming - just wish another rose establishment would buy it. I buy every time I go - figured better to have them growing in pots, just to have them. Their sale yard is great - but that was really picked over this week. Their roses grow so well, you will love what you are getting. Plum Perfect next to Soul Sister would be gorgeous.... Judith

Last of the snow melted today, so not quite ready for Hosta shipments. Snow still in forecast for this and next week - what do they know - throw a dart and you can forecast too.

I envy you, but I think it all evens out as we seem to get to enjoy longer into the fall. I definitely have the bug to do something, but it'll be a bit yet. Started some hosta seed 2 wks ago. First time. Seeing green, so I'm getting my fix.

Rb, definitely throw some brag pictures out there for us northerners.

Sorry, Ken & Paul, I'm still living in the dark ages. No DC!
Both kids have them, 2 different brands and each believe theirs is superior.
One day, I suppose that I will have to convert, as it's already difficult to find 35 mm slide film.

There's a downside to living in a warmer Zone, many Hostas and other frost tender perennials are already up and sporting new foliage, but we could have freezing temps at night, well into April. Our last frost date is about April 15, most years.

Another disadvantage, recent warm temperatures have produced mosquito larvae and a few adults are already taking aim!

Ken...Hope to see your new garden in about 90 days. So, better get busy!
Airline connections into LAN are turning out to be a nightmare. Where are you, Republic Airlines, when I need you?

I agree that we are lucky to have warm weather early but those of you who are colder than us grow your hostas larger so it evens out in that aspect as well.
I've had 2 shipments so far. I ordered WAY more than I had planned. Feed the addiction! LOL One of the hosta from Naylors (I can't remember which plant) had 10 (Yes TEN) eyes!!! Possibly Christmas Tree?? My Liberty from them had 2 huge eyes and is already about 5 inches tall.
The rain we're getting now will really be good for them.

Good thought!
I can fly to either DTW or FNT, rent a car for 5 days and drive to LAN, in less time and at less expense, than flying the "Hedge Hopper" commuters that go there!
Strangely (or maybe not!), if I lived in the DC area, I could get a non-stop flight from Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) to LAN.

glas.. i dont want to hijack this post.. care to start another about... post 'some pix with your cheap camera' .. or something like that ...

i upgraded ... nothing fancy .. but FILaw bought us a 300$ camera ... but i have to tell you.. i dont utilize many of the bells and whistles... its really just about how many pixels .. or how much clarity ... you can capture ...

the cheapo was never intended to capture pix .. that i would print in hardcopy .... so its low resolution was just fine for the puter ...
