I am finding more prolifs. Isn't it too late for them?

I supose it is so late because the prolifs I am finding now are on those late and extra late bloomers up in Olalliland. They don't bloom sooner so can't make prolifs sooner. But the prolifs are small, just starting. By the time they are big enough to plant, isn't it going to be too late in the year for them to overwinter?

Please don't tell me to plant them and put them on a windowsill inside. There are no plants inside the house here ever! I hate plants inside.

Rita, mine are also still growing them. In fact the one I posted with two now has three and two more right under those! I've never had so many before. Marg

Well, your in a colder zone than I am. Do you cut and plant the prolifs when they are very small? If I leave them to grow big it will be so late in the year. Too close to winter I think. Cut them now they are too small. Don't know what to do.

So here's how they look from further back... which is why I mistakenly said they looked fine. It's been chilly here (to me... not to anyone else) for the past couple days, so I've stayed in the house and done "house things." Today, I went out there and took these pics: And here we have close-ups of some examples of what I'm seeing happening. Also, I've noticed the new leaves seem stunted. They don't grow very big before they either stop growing or fall off. Misshapen leaves, 'browning out'... Hard to really tell in this picture, but the leaf in the center is sorta 'browning out.' If this was a fancy goldfish, I'd say this one has 'dropsy.' Some weird new-growth habit, among other things. More brown spots, plus white spots. At the edge of the pot, you can see the leaves are dying here and there. This is an attempt at a close-up of one of the worst ones. Small leaves that fall off if you even touch them. Another particularly affected plant. The first sign of a problem on a previously robust plant. I don't know what the problem is, but it's obviously contagious. I'm going to have to pull all of this out, dump the brand new potting media into the trash, wash and sterilize the pots, wait for some undetermined length of time, then replace it all. Super bummer. I only hope that whatever it is doesn't spread to things that AREN'T Coleus.

I am also zone 5 (wisconsin). The 1" peppers should produce (very late in the season) as long as you protect them well now. Make sure they don't dry out, and treat them like the fragile plant they are. They are very succeptible now. I started my seeds too late last year and transplanted some that small, I lost most of them. Carrots, Beans, Zucc, Cukes & Onions should be fine. The lettuce is a little late, it may bolt and get bitter FAST in the heat. The potatoes should have been planted mid-April, but you should still get some production. Tomatoes & peppers from SEED???? Sorry but DH is very right on this one. I started my tomatoes inside in March, transplanted them (about 6" tall)in Mid May, and hope to have tomatoes from them in July/Aug. about 5-6 mo from initial planting. You may get a tomato at the end of the season if you are lucky, but if you want tomatoes for sure go to a garden center and buy a couple of plants. If you get them in by this weekend you will still be ok. Before next year do a little research for your specific area and find a good planting guide. That will tell you when to start seeds inside/outside and when to get plants in the ground for best production. That way armed with good info DH won't be able to make fun of you.

OK, I too am suffering under the assault--this is a new pest for me; never had them before yet this year, they're here in droves. Here's what I do. I shake them out of the blossoms early in the morning and into my hand and then just roll them between my fingers to squash them. (Let me add that killing ANYTHING is a highly uncharacteristic thing for me to do, but these guys are decimating my plans--not just flowers, but the leaves.) I have found them on zinnia leaves, my cukes, pumpkin, squashes and cataloupes. I have found them on my sunflowers as well. However, they clearly prefer the pumpkin, cukes, squash, melons. My observations are as follows: (1) They congregate inside blossoms, as well as under leaves (look for the ones will a zillion toothmarks!!), inside the new leaves before they have unfurled, and at the base of the plant, at the soil-line; (2) when disturbed, they generally FIRST drop to the ground, THEN fly off; (3) when they drop to the ground, they often head to the base of the plant. They are not that fast. It is like a game to catch and roll them bet. my fingers. I count while I play this game. I have found that a few fly off, but I manage to get most or many on any given "murder spree." I catch the majority of them when the fall to the ground during my attacks. Some I get on the blossoms and on leaves. A quick squish, a heartfelt apology to the bug, and on to the next victim. They do seem more lethergic in the morning. I manage to get 50-100 per day, with 3-4 outings at various points in the day. I have been doing this for over 1 week. I think I MAY be making a dent in their population. I do seem to be seeing fewer than a week ago...but perhaps this has something more to do w/ their lifecycle than my murderous efforts.

Go ahead and go for it. Our weather is so variable here that more times than not you'll still get a good crop even from crops put in the ground somewhat late. I don't use potting soil in the trench, but you can if you want. However, be sure it is good and moist when you use it, because most soil-less potting mixes are high in peat and when peat gets really dry, it is almost impossible to get it to hold water again. So, keep it evenly moist all along until your seeds are up. I use compost instead of potting soil. I've not planted much for fall because the cool-down has not been very kind to us This week isn't over yet, and we've had highs of 109 and 106, in each case with the high temp going 8 or 9 degrees higher than forecast. I do hope that the cool weather gets here and stays here. I'd like to think we've seen the last of temperatures in the 100s at least. Fall weather is highly variable. We've been here 14 years and have had the first hard freeze of fall as early as the last week of September a couple of times and as late as mid-December once or twice. More normally it arrives in my area between mid-November and Thanksgiving. So, I never worry too much about planting the fall garden late since there's always a good chance the really cold weather will arrive late as well. If I'd planted fall crops on time, the poor things would have had to deal with high temps in the 106-112 range, so I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for the cool down. Well, just my opinion, but I would leave them on & then plant them later either in a protected place, or covered with mulch. You might lose them, but I've never had too much luck with very small prolifs. They might grow roots, but they don't seem to prosper.

This is my first time trying. I was going to cut it when it was 2-3" but when I went out and touched it, the darn thing snapped off in my hand. I put it in water to root and in a few days the roots were forming. I was advised to plant it up, making sure to keep the soil moist. I did pot it in a 1L pot and will probably sink the pot into the ground later. I chose the larger pots so that the roots would have a better chance to form. Nights here are starting to get cool so it won't be long before frost hits. Last year I dug a trench and put some pots in there for the winter. I watered the pots well first and then covered the pot with soil. Didn't lose anything. Marg

Gee Rita, Lucky you to be getting so many prolifs.I have not gotten any this year OR last year either.

Altogether I got 10 prolifs this year! I planted 3, the rest are growing roots still. I just saw the weather and in a few days it's going to be 34 at night :( I was thinking about potting them up and keep at home, but first, I don't have window-sills, and second, just like Rita, I don't like house plants, though I have two amarillises which I saved from the store :) So, I had good luck with growing a prolif in a pot outside like Marg did, but I think I'll plant them this year in the ground and see what happens.

I am finding more prolifs. Isn't it too late for them?
