never use digital zoom ... useless for quality pix ...
and i rarely use the other zoom ...
you are better off.. taking the picture at the biggest size possible.. and then learning to edit it in your editing program.. to fill the whole frame ... by capturing enough pixels ... you will get much better quality pix ... and the after effect will be to zoom in ....
however.. capturing the most pixels.. makes REALLY BIG pix files.. which can cause problems on an older computer ...
if absolutely none of that makes any sense.. lol ... try the DCamera for dummies book ... thats where i started ..
and.... watch out for the camera geeks.. they tend to not have any ability to discuss cameras in a manner that 99.9% of us can understand.. lol ... but they sure do try hard .... and the harder they try.. the less i understand ... lol ..
you should start.. by defining EXACTLY what you want to do with it ....
do you want to print out pix...??? then you need a certain level of pixels for crisp printed pix ...
if you just want to play with them online ... you need much less ...
personally ... i wouldnt pay more than $100 for your first camera.. and i wouldnt be surprised if you couldnt get a basic one for 25 to 50 bucks ... i would rather you spend a little.. to learn what you need.. before you invest in a rolls royce that you will never understand ...
my first camera .. was a 67$ aldi special ... and did just fine for 3 years.. until i learned enough to understand that i needed more ...
Well Ken what do you think I want to do with the camera! Help to enable all of us on the forum! Don't ya think? oh, and take some pics of my beautiful grandaughter! That is the first reason. I was told by hubby that I can start pricing! Yeah! I want to mostly post, and then print some pictures. Good Ideas about camera's for dummies. I sure cannot take a good picture. ;) Mary
I have a digital SLR,namely Nikon D70. The main reason I have this one is,I had many 35mm cameras before digital, and this one takes all my old lenses, which interchange perfectly with the digital one. Phil
I have a Fuji s8000, it's a digital point and shoot with 18x zoom. I don't use the digital zoom because the photos are real grainy with it. The regular zoom however is very good for not being SLR. For plant taking purposes the s700 would be fine, my friend just got it at Wal-Mart for $135. She's never had a real camera before and has been shooting super macro of the hostas I gave her as well as I do. Her bird watching shots are fairly good too, (she needs a better photography eye to frame them better, lol). I take mostly birdwatching photos and my hostas for the forums, the 8000 has done fine for me but I'm wishing I had spent the money on the DSLR for better luck with the wildlife shots - I miss turning the focus myself.
Mary, I'd recommend asking to borrow a digital camera from a family member, neighbor or friend and see how you like theirs. Hey it's digital so cost is time and recharging the battery. Then you have a starting point. Make sure you borrow their USB cord also, so you can download pics and evaluate on your computer -- and post some pics here.
$100-200 for nice point and shoot. Like Ken said ignore digital zoom, but you will want some optical zoom.
oh.. and if you dont have one... invest in twice as many rechargeable batteries as the camera holds... plus a charger ...
so if the camera takes 4 batteries.. buy eight ... ALWAYS good to have a spare set ready to go ... they never loose juice when you are playing in the yard ... its always at that special event .. and you are not at home..
also a nice camera bag .. big enough to hold the camera.. and the extra batteries .... and an extra memory card ...
and an extra memory card ... 2 gig for about $15 or so ... that is a lot of pix ... same as above ... you never run out of memory until there is some precious event ...
correct on the difference with lens zoom and digital zoom ... i do use the regular zoom ..
just dont get all wrapped up in all the mumbo jumbo.. it can easily overwhelm you ... just make a decent decision ... and you will figure it all out.. once you have the camera in hand ...
bottom line.. its nearly all idiot proof ... my pix being proof of that ... dont let all the fancy terms .. and mysterious technology interfere with its idiot-proofness [new word.. lol] ....
