If a hosta is in the trash, I would leave it in the trash. There might be a very good reason it was there.

That Krossa Regal I found was in it's original pot from the garden center, obviously rootbound bigtime, so I brushed out the roots to untangle them. I then planted it in the ground in my front yard, well away from my other hostas... I have it quarantined.. I spoke to the neighbor who threw it away, and she said it was a gift and she didn't care for most Hostas(See, a WEIRDO) But she was nice enough to let me take it, even though she was tossing it. I found it, and planted it November 29th, 2012....I await it's awakening. I have an HVX kit I bought for it, and I'll test it when it comes up. I personally thought the best thing to do was put it right in the ground, since the soil was still workable here in late fall. I could be wrong, but we'll see. If it's a clean plant, it'll be worth the salvage, since buying a KR with SIXTEEN eyes would probably be pretty darn expensive. If it's infected I've invested only a Test Kit. Wish me luck, I'm keeping my fingers Krossa!

Sounds like you've got every eventuality covered, Don. I'll be counting the eyes on my five-year old KR this spring... haven't done that yet...to compare size. Good luck with your big one.

Though in case that plant in the nursery pot in the trash was sick with a virus, that's why the neighbor did not care for it, then handling it could have spread that virus to tools and other hostas via the tools last November, etc....

And in July when the brown streaks appear in the leaves you will know that you have saved a large number of Foliar Nematodes from the trash. But you can look at the KR in May and June. So there's that.

Teri, put it in a pot if the ground is unworkable. You need to get some dirt on those roots. I would not bring it in or try to force it. Just keep it from getting too wet and staying that way.

You guys know nematodes are unlikely in a plant still in the nursery pot. Give Don a break. I would try it, but of course, I'd put it in a pot.

Nematodes, well we will see, always a possibility of course....Ha ha Bernd thinks I'm a dummy and didn't use bleach solution on my tools after using them on a Hosta I put in HVX quarantine....Nope, not THIS dummy! :)

Last August I went Hosta shopping to pretty much every nursery in my area to see how many peeps were selling nematode loaded plants. Every nursery in Massachusetts that I visited (save one) had nems in their plants. All of these were in pots. I just wanted to see how widespread nems were. They were pretty much everywhere. The only way to be sure you have a healthy plant is to buy a TC from a reputable seller.

I might have introduced leaf nematodes to my hostas with plants in nursery pots bought at a very nice nursery. Plants I bought at big box seemed to be healthy. One wrongly labeled hosta I had to buy at Walmart years ago possibly introduced HVX. You can easily transmit leaf nematodes via pruning shears, and possibly rain drops. Good luck!

Let me just put this concern over the 'Krossa Regal' to rest. I know it's OK, because just before I planted it, I kicked it across my driveway for several minutes.

So, it's fine. I got that tip right here in the forum. From Steve. Or maybe Paul...Was it Don Rawson? No...no; I can't think of who it was just now....Anyway, it worked.

Oh well. I treated two hosta last year with the "bleach soak" 20% not 10%. Prettiest white root ball you ever saw. Tossed the potting medium too. Tossed the cheap pot. Both lived. We'll see what happens this year, they are already up and growing, but have been isolated until I see if the streaking returns.

Those were of course part of my container collection of hosta. I would venture to say that there are nematodes in my garden, if other species of plants have nematodes, because I've purchased from many sources far and wide, local and nationally. If nems can be "shed" from watering a plant and gain access to the soil and travel to other pots, they'll all have it sooner or later. Hopefully not, but I'm a bit of a pessimist about growing a perfect garden.

I always figure, "If it can go wrong, it will," and I plan accordingly. Sure hope all those chemicals I have in my beloved Teahouse are not combustible. :)

Steve, I see you explored the nurseries of the area and discovered a lot more than one had the nem problem. Good for your inquiring mind.

I'm certainly going to be checking out local Hosta sellers for nematodes now, as well as HVX signs. Good thinking, Steve.
