Transferred Again... 100s of Hosta Moving Again!

Here we go again... After three years in beautiful southeast Missouri and having my hosta all happy again, it's time to move again. Luckily this is the last time since my husband will be retiring in a few years. We will have an acre lot and I'm bringing along 300+ hosta and perennial plants. That wS the first addendum to our sales contract lol.

My question is how do hosta fare under pine trees? The new yard has several of them along with many ancient pinoaks. If they don't tolerate pines, any ideas on whAT would do well with pines? Thanks so much!

Sheila first off good that you can bring your plants with you and have land for planting them.
I have pine trees and hostas. The hostas in that area are doing okay under the pines but I did add compost to this area. What I have are eastern white pines, which I don't recommend. They are weak limbed and drop a lot of pine cones and needles. Every winter large limbs break off from snow or ice, hopefully you don't have any of these!

pines are fine ... a bit acidic which is OK ..

natural needle mulch ..

as with any big trees... dig hole.... insert hosta... return native soil ... broadcast water and fert ...

the biggest warning ... UNDER PINES IT IS A DESERT ... you will need to water a lot ... BUT THAT WOULD BE NO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER TREE WHICH NEVER HAD A GARDEN UNDER IT ...

just learn to water deeply and properly ...

Hi Teresa, Wow I envy your greenhouses. I won't just one and you have five. I would love to trade for some of your daylilies. Yes daylily addiction is bad, and so is irises, hostas, and so on and so on. Once you get started you can't quit. Moving Those Daylilies Around Again Today

Well, I know I have at least 5 more daylilies to move but I didn't move any today as it is sprinkleing. Not really raining much, just enough to be annoying. Andrea, I guess last year I was done for last year but then this year you know I just have to move some more LOL! Lots of it was due to the ones I moved outta here forever. Then I wanted to move some ones around because that really would be better than just trying to stick something new in each empty spot. Besides sounds as if you did lots and lots of moving around yourself. But don't you just love it after it is all done and you have things arrainged the way you want them? Your projects are going to be stunning when you are done. Maybe while you are planning that hosta and fern bed you might want to add some spring bulbs this fall or next. I bet they would look fabulous along the edge of the woods. CTC- I just go collect bags of leaves left at the curb and I do it in the middle of the day. No sneaking required! As for being busy in the garden, it seems that I am ALWAYS busy doing one project or another. Never ends. But I like to be out there.

Three weeks ago we had a "Gust Front" blow through here with winds up to 55+ miles an hour. I lost two trees in the back which was only a big deal because of cleaning up the mess.Over a week later we discovered that a large Hickory in front of the house had about a 4 foot long crack starting where a large branch joined 10 feet above the ground and extending down into the heart of the tree. We had to have it taken down. In doing so we lost the shade that it provided for my hosta bed and they were exposed daily to 7 hours of afternoon son. They were fading before my eyes. I don't have a bed ready for them as it is just too hot and humid to do anything outside right now. So I managed to dig them up and potted all of them. About 25 plants. They are now sitting under our east facing, second story screened porch. They get dappled sunlight in the morning and are in shade for the rest of the day. Not a single one of them has complained. I was afraid that I would have trouble with some but even the Fire and Ice which had a small branch fall and crush one side of it is toddling right along. Right now the Guacomole is the only variety blooming but they hadn't even put up scapes when I dug them 2 weeks ago. I discovered when I dug up the bed that it was seething with a thick mass of fine tree roots so it seems it was only a matter of time before I would have started having problems anyway. I will probably put in a planting bed when it cools off a little in the fall. In the meantime I am considering keeping mine in pots. Southeast Tennessee isn't like the gulf coast or Texas but the summers have been pretty ugly the past few years.

The fairie is now tied to the patio post so it can't fall on anymore of my hosta... It made me sick to take the destroyed leaves off the PUD. And it was kind of "flat" for about a week... Now he's perking back up though! YAY!! Algebra test, not so good but better than I thought I would. I still have one more test and then the final and of course homework to bring the grade back up to a B (it's a C now).

Just keep in mind that all pines are not created equal. If I had it to do over again I would have cut down all of my eastern white pines and planted different trees. I have five of them, all over 60-70 feet tall and they are dangerous to be under in any kind of storm. Not to mention the damage they cause when they drop a limb on whatever unlucky plant is below.
Sheila try to see if you can figure out what kind of pines you have. Also look up at them and see if you can see any signs of snapped off broken limbs from previous damage. Weak limbed trees are a pain and make clean up a never ending problem.

I agree w/ the others , mine do great w/compost & water under pines. After a soaking rain sometimes the hosta are still bone dry, so make sure you check often . Good luck with your move! I laugh at myself now , I moved here 12 years ago w/ 1 hubby, 3 sons ,1 dog, & 4 unduluta :D

Good luck on the move. In a prior post someone mentioned that all pines are not equal. Hear, Hear! Almost all of them here are Red Pine, and are almost as root invasive as some Maples. Before we realized that we had a lot of hosta that shrunk from year to year, even to death. Now we dig as big a hole as possible, amend the dirt, line the hole with (important part) COMMERCIAL GRADE weed barrier cloth and throw it all back together.

So, Red Pines, very much a problem with fine surface roots. Jack Pine - absolutely no problem. Go figure!

With all your moving about are you changing zones? How does your stock adapt? I know hosta are hardy in many zones..but I just am wondering how a specific plant reacts to going from one zone to another.
I have hosta under and around several different pines. Mine all do fine. Some started very small due to the root competition, and my inability to dig a bigger hole but they have adapted and thrived.
