Dried yellow ooze on my Compacta...anyone know?

This plant has lots of new growth and leaves coming in. This morning I noticed this dried yellow stuff on one of the stems. It's like it oozed out overnight and then dried quickly, it wasn't there last night when I went to bed. There are beads on the tip of the stalk where leaves are just forming, and more dried at the tips of the small leaves below that. It's a clearish bright yellow color, and it falls off easily if I brush it. I don't see this anywhere else on the plant right now, but a few weeks ago I remember seeing a little bit of bright yellow powdery stuff on a young leaf. The plant itself doesn't look damaged, the leaves don't look like they've been chewed on or anything. Anyone know what this is and if I should be concerned? Or is it normal for new growth to seep a little something?

Just wanted to update this. After the yellow stuff appeared, this new growth stalled out. A few days later the tip above the node and the smaller leaf on the right shriveled and fell off. Once those were gone, the remaining new leaf started growing again and looks quite healthy. I haven't heard from anyone who knows what this is or why it happened, so if you've seen it before and/or know how to prevent it happening again, let me know. Thanks!

Shell, I'm heading out to help my good friend work on her greenhouse. Once we take a break I'll have her look at your picture, if anyone would know, she would! It shows up cloudy on my screen, but most pictures do.

I think it's peach canker. I hope more experienced peach growers will chime in. I was told that with canker, nothing much you can do but keep the tree healthy and vigorous so it can recover from this fungal disease. It depends on where the canker is. When possible, you could remove the affected branch. I've heard that some trim off the affected area and spray with fungicide.Never try it. I usually let my trees heal their canker wounds. So far, canker has not killed my peach trees yet. Also, look out for peach borers, too. It's an insect that attacks the base of your tree. Look around the base for oozing jelly-like stuff. In our area, growing peach is a lot more challenging than apple or pear.

Hello everyone ! Please help me about my pachira plant. I have a 6.5 foot tall plant that grew beautifully. noticed many Honeydews on the top and I took it as a sign of over watering so I cut the water. Things got worst, Honey dews rapidly progressed and covered the whole length of the tree and the leaves started to get yellow. I noticed some tiny brown dots under the leaves that could be scratched off. I sprayed my plant thoroughly with insecticide after. The dews are gone but now the leaves are showing patches of brown ( Embedded withing the structure of the leave like decolourations ) can you please let me know what to do ? Needless to say that I noticed some webbing and found that they are caused by spider mites. So what do I do now ? How often should I keep spraying it ? thanks !

lemecdutex (Ron) has brought up what I was thinking all through my reading of this thread: For me, this is another nail in my coffin. My nose is extremely sensitive, and not in a good way. I love the scents of the Teas, but there are times (when I'm working in the Sacramento Cemetery Garden) when my nose actually hurts, and I get a headache - this is when things are at the height of bloom, and it comes mainly from the really strongly scented roses. I love being there and working with the roses, so I try to think of it as a price willingly paid, like sunburn, etc. But catalogs that have been scented can just pole-ax me, and the world lately has become so fragrance-happy that those of us that can't handle it (and there a LOT of us) are in a bad way, because it's EVERYWHERE. I think, though I'm not sure, that most perfumes are now made in laboratories out of chemicals, rather than in France, from flowers. And I also think that the scents on paper are made up, at least in part, of chemicals that have been formulated to approximate a particular real fragrance - and the chemicals are a big part of why some people have such an extreme reaction. I've also noticed, in reading on this forum, that people seem to actually "read" rose fragrances differently, according to their individual nose, or olfactory nerve perhaps. Some people smell a tea fragrance, others smell it but don't think it "tea-like". Some consider Teas to be virtually scentless. I read the Tea thing more often than references to the fragrances of other classes, but I think there is probably an individual reaction to those, also. Sherry, I hope your DH doesn't feel insulted by my negative input. I'm sure it seems like a wonderful idea to everyone who loves all those smells, and they are, after all, in the majority. And, anyway, this is all probably just a delightful and jolly discussion, just to run with. Because, actually, I think the cost of such a book/catalog would be prohibitive - that is, if they had to get a good match of all those different roses. Of course, THEN we could have one of those wonderful long threads with people disagreeing like mad about whether a page REALLY smelled like Duchesse de Brabant... Laura

I'm not sure, but the sticky black stuff sounds like the sooty mold that grows on the "honeydew" excreted by aphids and mealybugs. That white stuff on the main stem, did it look a bit cottony, or pinkish white when you rubbed it? If so, could be mealybugs, and the alcohol swabbing you employed is a good remedy. Light horticultural oil also works -- Sun Oil is a commonly available brand. You use it diluted as a spray. If the white stuff was crusty, it sounds like dried something. Maybe sugar in the sap. The clear oozing stuff sounds like sap, too. The plant should seal off a wound fairly quickly, but with the sap running at full tilt right now it may take a little while. The thing is you shouldn't be having sap ooze out of the main stem of the shrub. Look for little holes with sawdust poking out (Ambrosia beetle borer evidence). The holes will be quite small, maybe the diameter of angelhair pasta, if that helps. Ambrosia beetle is yet another Asian invader brought in by sloppy shipping controls. It first showed up in 1999 in SC, but has spread like crazy, largely through the nursery trade shipping infested plants around. Control is difficult, especially now that Dursban is off the market. Hope this helps. Look your plant over *really* carefully and post back about any additional oddities you see, and particularly if you see borer evidence. Your county ag agent will probably want to know about that, too, if that's what you've got. Marty

Shell, We are at a loss as to what was on your compacta....
While posting before, it crossed my mind that the vine may been damaged and oozing sap, since this is one of the Hoyas that doesn't have white sap. I didn't go there because I recall the sap being more clear. (can you tell it's been eons since I've taken cuttings from this one???)

When telling my friend of this her theory was that mealy bugs sometimes leave behind a yellowish secretion. Later we looked at your picture and she doesn't think that is the problem.
I told her my theory on damaged foliage and sap oozing out,
which made sense. I just plucked a leaf from compacta though and the sap isn't yellowish at all on my plant.

Sorry to be no help! I have known of people taking samples to the county AG extension office for testing and/or identifying of odd fungii ect.... The cost used to be minimal.

I've noticed several times that my compactas have this yellow ooz. But not always. At this moment I can't remember what had happened to such and such cuttings years ago, but I know it wasn't bugs for sure. In my case, it could be only two things : it's either a seasonal/environmental/cultivation difference or it had to do with a fungal infection of some sort.Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks to both of you for the input. I haven't seen any more of this on the plant, so still don't have any ideas either. It's funny how the surviving leaf has grown so quickly after that tip and the other leaf died. It's hard to even pick out the new leaf now. It's grown as big as the others around it in the last week's time.
