have alot in the yard for five or more years. keeps coming back! done hundreds of cutings, all take and keep coming back. "jewels of opar.".....oh yea, you guys all hiding in the ac, gw getting a bit boring....:)

Hester, you've done a wonderful job of making a tropical paradise in such a short time. I love your garden. I get out and work in the heat too. No one here does but me.

Wallisadi, for some reason Jewels of Opar won't grow for me. I've tried them several times. What's your secret? :o)

I have a Campsis x tagliabuana 'Madame Galen' (a cross)trumpet vine that is vigorous but not invasive in my zone 5 garden. Mine was planted in 2004. I have mine growing in quite a bit of shade and use it to hide some ugly brick. It gives a nice solid green backdrop that I like. I stretch mine out sideways in two directions and it grows about 20-25 feet at most. Mine does not bloom, perhaps originally because of the part shade. However, I read on Dave's that it does not bloom (or is very slow to bloom) for many people, supposedly because it may have been started from immature stock. As my trumpet vine grew older I began cutting it back each year in early spring to 3-5 feet and letting it regrow, which it does quickly. This keeps it exactly where I want it - on what I want and since it climbs by itself there is almost no work for me at all after its yearly haircut. It does not send up runners across the way or anything like that, and can't spread its seed or anything because it has no flowers! I tried a Campsis radicans Flamenco and it died out in a couple of years. I think it may have been too wet, or so slow to show itself that I planted something else into it. Some other vines I use that you might be interested in are honeysuckles, the very nice Lonicera sempervirens 'Blanche Sandman' has lots of scarlet blooms and is very well-behaved. Mine was planted in 2005. I did have another one with flame in the name, Goldflame, Pink Lemonade ?? something like that, anyway that one mildewed badly for me, something I hardly ever get in this garden, but this one probably got shaded out too much by some enlarging shrubbery making it weak. I eventually removed it. It had the typical narrow tubular blooms that were a pretty pink color. However, neither of these two vines get really long like a trumpet vine or a sweet autumn clematis do. My two sweet autumns both get well over 20 feet, but unlike in the south, I have never had a single seedingl off of mine. The SACs gets cut back to 3-5 feet from the woody base and regrow covering most of a 60 foot stretch of fence. In addition, I also have a Halls (japonica) honeysuckle which is considered by most everyone to be invasive. I love the thing and planted it long before I knew it was supposed to be a problem, well over 10 years ago. It is some work for me, but not outlandish by any means. It blooms very well and has a wonderful scent. It may be a true invasive getting into wild places and such, but I have not been able to bring myself to remove it, especially since it is available for sale everywhere around here. With the Hall's honeysuckle I limit (cut out) the number of main stalks coming out of the ground each spring, make sure everything goes up the structure including later emerging growth, as it does try to root if pieces or stems are left on the ground, then let it waterfall down, being careful again not to let it touch the ground. I also cut out some of the undergrowth if it gets too bushy in midseason after its main growth period is over. It blooms for over a month in mid-spring through early summer. It mostly blooms on old wood, which is why I restrict the number of stems rather that cutting it all back in spring, I do get some repeat bloom later in the season. Every three years or so I cut it back hard and let it regrow - maybe 15 foot max with cutbacks, somewhat longer without them. I can't really recommend this one, if it is invasive to the environment, but it is very manageable in my climate in my conditions with reasonable pruning.

Well, I have been very busy w/ all this "homework" you all gave me! There is so much color variation in pics that it makes deciding difficult. Looking at the pics on HMF, I really like Madame Charles, but I wonder how big it gets and how resistant it is? Spice, unfortunately, appears to be a pinky-white. As for Devoniensis, would you describe it as pinky-white, apricot-white or creamy-white? The Vintage catalog shows D. as about 4 ft tall (the illustrations are great for shape but I don't like relying on them for size), which would be too short to plant between 6 ft tall roses. Many of the OGRs seem to get very large- that is going to limit how many I can get :( Nickel.- It wasn't Vintage that listed that hgt- it was Heirloom. And HMF says 4-10 ft. So many to choose from! I like contrast, so I want a good contrasting color between the 2 reds, and I would also like a rose w/ many petals. 6 ft tall will work fine, taller would be okay IF I can tie it to my deck railings- will that be okay? I need all the help I can get and appreciate all of you taking the time to share your experience w/ me. Brandy

Marilu, thanks for sharing photos of your lovely Marmori and Silmakivi they are absolutely beautiful. I have a few, all but the Blue Bells stressed out during the 2 weeks of heat-wave we had (even with protective plants to keep their feet cool. Bellarosa - I was searching for an enthusiastic grower of a vine for my newly erectedÂ arbor when I ran into your Sweet Autumn photos andÂ she won my heart! I chance to find one late in the season and in a very sad state - they gave her to me for next to nothing - to add insult to her sad state,Â I even accidentally broke the only stem that showed some life - I set her in, at the foot of the arborÂ anyway and true to her nature, as read from the SA thread, climb she did, & branched out too!!! A few days after, another local nursery just got a new shipment of very young ones - not knowing if my first one would bounce from the accident, I brought home one of them and after a week in the ground buds started showing and very soon, the most delightful blossoms opened with beautiful & gentle, jasmine like scent!!! Again thanks for sharing your photos and thoughts. She is my favorite!

My favorite long-bloomer is a shrub, actually. It's pink cestrum, and a hummer favorite. This was planted in 2002 and has NEVER once been out of bloom since. Even for coastal Northern CA, that's an amazing feat. Sadly, they don't make good cut flowers, though. Outside of this, the oleander (flowers stay for 7 months) comes in second, and after that the roses, which bloom successively in flushes starting in March and going until December (but they slow down a lot starting in November). Roses never really go dormant, in fact, which makes it hard to figure out when to prune them here. Cestrum before I pruned back that weird overhanging branch, LOL: Close-up of flowers:

Jewels of Opar look great.

I usually work in the heat, too. From 9 to 10 am and again about 6 pm until dark. But, I usually hit a wall in August and I have again this year. Just the bare minimum here.

I try not to work in the middle of the day but I am out there all summer. With 2 1/2 acres you don't get to sit around much.

Hester, you continue to amaze and inspire!

The trouble with sweat is that it drips on your glasses and runs the bug repellent.

I pick my projects on where the sun is in the sky - so I'm in the shade!

This summer has seemed miserably hot.

The nice thing about all this heat, and rain now that is has finally started, is that my new South Garden on a Dime is taking off and looking very nice.

hester, keep it up......:) i have a list a mile long for my day off tomorrow and it is all outside. i work outside for a job, so i'm kinda use to it, but it's been rough this summer. job well done,.....don't blame anybody for going inside, just miss alot of the pics from spring! your garden looks incredible.....! katkin...semi sun i think, freeze back every year and right back up....must have fifty around the yard all from the original mother plants, got a lime green one from that winter park garden we went to. damn, i'm never this wordy....?

Wallisadi, I'll have to give jewels a try again. I love the colorful leaves, it's a good filler plant.

I just got a pure white spathoglottis and a pure white curcuma at HD yesterday. You don't see them pure white often. I have both in many colors but not the pure white. So I am a happy camper. :o)

Yup, sweat gets on your glasses and in your eyes. dont' you hate it when glasses fog up when you leave a store?
Katkin - I'm hoping my HD has something different today - lucky you!
Today may have to be a slow gardening day - it's only just 8am and the heat index is 93 with no rain in sight. As I've mentioned, I don't usually mind the heat, but jeez, I might hit a wall today!

Jewels of Opar is something I've never tried. Has really pretty foliage, Wallisadi.

Hester, your transformation is definitely inspiring. Can't believe how fast it's gone!

have 250 pavers in my driveway....16x16...six pallets of sand coming tomorrow...not sure why we do it to ourselves this time of year....i really hate winter!.....:)

Maybe not as ambitious as some but here are mine:

This is a project that I loved. I am working on pegging this rose. I've somehow really messed up my soil so for a while have to grow roses in pots. But it turned out OK.

I'm also repotting about a hundred roses, well that my be a touch of an exaggeration.

What a wonderful garden. I am trying to make our yard all sod free-but I find the plants are now invading my weed garden. Did you have professional advice or could I copy your method and what plants do you have? I find lantana grows well for me and have a beautiful mandevilla and firebush both die in winter but return.

try some jatropha....lowes or depot....comes back every year, nice red bloom........by june at least two foot tall!

I love that plant! If I had any sun here, I'd buy one. I had one in North Port that was in a pot, and absolutely needed no care other than a shot of timed-release pellets in the spring and fall. It bloomed continuously. BTW, I have that same bromeliad. Mine is not growing at all, and doesn't get enough sun.
