New Daylily Bed

I have been given some wonderful new daylilies, they are now in pots growing away, already multiplying and getting big I am so excited.

So I figure they deserve a new bed, a fancy new bed. I am making it L shaped to begin with and will probably go down the other side as well, maybe a little later on, depends on how far my soil goes. The L will have a fence made out of metal headboards and footboards painted white, it will all be very Victorian. I will put a 4x4 inch post at the corner and each end to attach the fence to. Here is a link with some headboards used as a fence. I will not have the wooden bench or the tipsy pots. You may have to copy and paste the link, that's the only way I can get it to work. I already have 3 headboards, gonna need at least 7 more, I want it big, but I can add those as I get them. It will be a great place to sit and watch the butterflies and hummers going after my new daylilies. I will also add other bulbs and small perennials. I love the Profusion Zinnias too, I will probably edge the bed with them. They bloom till frost.

Sounds like you have a plan. Headboards and footboards, huh? Never thought of doing something like that but it sounds interesting. I will definitely be planting zinnias next year because of their late bloom season. My daughter has some and they are sooo pretty.

Didn't know you couldn't link to more than one forum. That is weird.

Sounds like a really neat idea for a garden, especially the headboard/footboard fencing. Will look forward to seeing a picture of your end result!

I'm not sure how far this particular seller is from you but you may want to try: "Maurice Farms". He posted on the My Daylilies website and is on the LA (Lily Auction) under the seller name of Cajunkid. I've not purchased from him previously but do have an order coming this spring. Another resource is the AHS but I noticed they don't have any resources listed for Region 13 Louisiana(????). Hopefully some others on this forum may have some suggestions. Julia

Jean- My 4 o'clocks never come up the following year, they always get frozen by winter. They do not even self seed here. I mean they do alll summer but then again nothing comes up over winter. So I have to start them again, which is a real pain. I had them running all along the front wall last summer until I yanked them to make that big planter box in the front yard were lots of new daylilies are going to be planted. Now morning glories are another story, those always (and easily) self seed. I find that if I leave any or miss any they bloom the wrong colors with smaller flowers, so I pull out self seeded vines and plant new ones from bought seeds. Last year I had some on a tower but they got so overgrown I pulled them out. This spring I think I will plant them on a much bigger, stronger tower were my trumpet vine died. Julie- I love the flowers on the bearded iris but for me the bloom period is too short to go nuts and plant them all over. Also, I do not like the looks of the bearded iris folliage. That skinny bed section in the front will be it for now. The Siberian Iris are different and I think they will be a lovely no fuss addition to my garden. Last night I also ordered one Japanese Iris because the picture was so lovely, I could not resist. I had some Japanese Iris many, many years ago at another house but not since then. I have this empty spot that I tried daylilies in but moved them because I did not like the look there. Its got roses and crosima on the sides and daylilies in front and then empty spot will now be iris. I also bought my first ever Spuria Iris and still don't know where I will plant it.

You mean thats not the only new daylily bed from 2010? You had another bed? There are a lot of daylilies in there. It should be truely stunning in bloom when they clump up.

Well that certainly is good news. I knew they ate bugs and are beneficial to most flowerbeds but I was extremely worried about them and my daylilies. I would just die if I went out there to discover they were eatting the roots of my precious daylily babies. (grin) I just got those little jewels and I guess you could say I'm a little over protective. Thank you all for responding and making me feel more at ease. Happy Gardening Marian

I am going to plant the bed right along the fence and have a big quarter circle where the L meets.

I am glad you found a link that would copy as I just couldn't immagine what it would look like just from your description. Pictures always help for me!

It really is a very novel idea and not going to look like everyone elses fence. Your idea is very creative. I think it will look great.

Now where does one gets lots of metal beds?

My big headboard ia from the bed I slept in growing up. I found two from a day bed at a garage sale, really cheap, plus there were 3 other side pieces which I am going to use to do the third side. I am going Friday, hopefully, to a few junk shops and some garage sales, you never know when you will get lucky. I told my daughter if she doesn't clean her room up I am going to take her headboard and footboard to use in my fence too. lol.

Ha, gotta get the room cleaned somehow LOL.

Did you get your soil for the new gardenbed yet? I figgure its about the right time to plant down there.

No soil yet, I have a few more places to check on. It is still a little too hot to put them in the ground yet. They are all doing really good in their pots under the tree. I have till the end of October to get them in the ground. We don't usually get a freeze till mid December, if then.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments, I am sure it will look good too. I was walking my yard one evening trying to figure out a new bed and I turned around and looked at this spot and just saw everything so clear, so I am gonna dive right in and do it.
