Can I trim down a Hoya

Hi everyone! I'm new to here and indoor gardening. I was given a gift of a good sized hoya plant. I can't tell what type either because I am not familiar with them. My questions is that the long vines have not been trimmed, the previous owner had simply intertwined them back thru the hanging plant. Can they be trimmed? The previous owner told me not to? It seems to me the excess vine is crowding it. I'd appreciate any help with this! I've been surfing the web, but can find the answer!

Hi Chris & Welcome to the Wonderful World of Hoyas,

I'm posting on the fly here, just a few quick comments to get you started & I'm sure others will add on more.

Hoyas don't mind being crowded (either in pots that seem too small for them) or all wrapped around themselves as it sounds yours is. If the person who gave it to you got it to a good size, he/she probably knows what they're doing & you could probably benefit from listening to their advice 'til you have some experience of your own in growing this, esp. if you're new to indoor gardening.

First rule of thumb is not to cut plants back in Winter, it's (generally) best done after Spring has started & certainly when the plant is in active growth (showing fresh new leaves that have just sprouted).

If you'd give some descriptions as to shape of leaves, their size & color, whether speckled or not, etc., we can probably guess which one it is & give you better advice on its care. Also is in in plastic pot or clay, how often are you watering & what/how much light is it getting?

If you trim those bare vines now, you won't be able to do anthing else with them (bare vines once cut, won't make new leaves). If you wait 'til they have leaves & by then maybe have an idea what kind it is, you may be able to then take cuttings of the vines & put them in water to make more plants (for yourself or to share w/ others) or even add them back in the Moma plant's pot to make it even more full & lush.

Hi there!

You could just untangle the vines and let them hang down. Trimming them will not hurt the mom plant but you may have to wait A LONG time to see blooms.(and that would be sad IMHO)

If you decide to trim... Wait till spring, like Pirate Girl said, and share them... share them with us:-) You'll recieve different kinds of Hoya's in return and make new friends at the same time!

Hi nova12, Well I did the same thing about 2 months ago and I was worried too but once the roots got going it only took about 2-3 weeks and it started to grow leaves the right way up and now after 3 months it is a very beautiful Hoya and the leaves are now growing the right way up.So don't worry too much as your not the only one to make this mistake lol..Hope your Hoya grows as well as mine did..Karen...

I would stick with one for a 6 inch pot...It will fill out quickly.There are a good size for the price.I have one in a 6 inch pot for 2 summers now and doubles in size each year.You can always cut off the longer ends and stick back in the pot to root,or overlap the longer vines back on top of the soil and hold in place with a rock or pin down with bobby pins or clothes hanger cut up and bent in u bends.The vine will form roots and eventually make a new plant...that's what i did. They also sell the regular bella as well.Here is mine.

I don't have enough info to decide whether it needs to be removed: space available, distance from buildings, utilities, sidewalks, etc, etc, but I typically don't have trees removed until they seem likely to soon cause an issue. However, I live in a rural area, and considerations of cost of removal, other issues such as location of hazards such as overhead wires, buildings, other trees, etc. may influence your decision and are probably different in your more populated area.

Is that a privet hedge (Missouri Botanical Gardens, click)? You can do a Google search for more photos to help with ID. I've only had to deal with a privet for a short time at another residence, Beth. The boxwood that you might prefer isn't as hardy as privet (so don't go thinking that you can gain that "manicured" look :o).
