Neewbie awaiting spring

I plant about 15 hosta's last year (first year in my house). Now I'm awaiting spring to see how they come back. Is there anything special I should do? When I purchased home, there was already some hostas planted in front yard but they did not grow much (they were tiny). I dug these up at end of season and planted in backyard since I read on this site that a lot of people move plant and they do better in another area. My Hostas were pretty when I first planted them but by end of season they looked horrible. I'm looking at the pictures that are posted and these hostas look great. Are there any secrets you can share? How can I keep them looking great and not looking ragged?

Water. H2O. Moisture. Ensure surface feeding tree (or other plants) roots are not stealing the water. Now between flowering and end of season, water more.

Remember the 3 year rule. First year they sleep, second creep, third leap.

What do you mean by the 3 year rule? Will my Hosta's not come back this spring?

I sow most of my seeds in the basement in trays under lights. Lettuce, broccoli, spinach and kale are already up and at 'em. Carrots, onions, garlic and shallots are already growing from a fall planting. Any day now I will sow peas (Snow and Garden peas) and nasturtiums - in the ground outside, they hate to be transplanted. I have a whole new area behind my blueberry row that I have been working on all winter. I will fill it with pumpkins and melons this summer. After that I am officially out of room...well, except for that stretch along the driveway leading out to the mailbox...

Rose diseases are specific to roses for the most part; they won't catch them from other plants. Herbicides and insecticides can be very dangerous to dogs but fungicides not so much. I have two dogs myself, I shut them in the house while I spray but they can come out as soon as it's dry. If they chewed on the roses I'd be more cautious but they don't. Copper sulfate is a dormant spray so you couldn't use it now anyway. This time of year people use other things on blackspot. For the caterpillars, something called Bt is recommended, totally safe for anything other than caterpillars or flies/mosquitoes. It's a bacteria that causes disease in these insects when eaten. I don't recommend people use it a lot as it doesn't distinguish between pest moth caterpillars and caterpillars that will grow up to be butterflies. On roses you're pretty safe though as few butterfly caterpillars feed on roses.

They do look quite eager :) We had a frost in middle TN last night...ugh! Luckily, I brought the seedlings I was hardening off inside around dusk (along with my garlic chives, which are usually pretty weather resistant). I'm running out of space inside (only best half of seedlings in sunny window spots), so I need Spring to come too!

They will come back-no worries. Also, hosta often (always-sooner or later) look a little ragged by the end of the season-no worries there either. Just read everyone's posts here and you'll learn everything you need to know. Caution is required, though. This could be the beginning of a serious addiction.

The 3 year rule applies to just about all perennials.
Just a little rhyme about growth rate.
The first year, they sleep. You plant them and they just seem to sit there and do nothing.
The second year, they creep. They come back, but it seems like they increase their growth very little.
The third year, they leap. They come back and will have spread, double or tripled their size.
