2009 Bloom season - playing catch-up!

Just trying to catch up on some photos from this season - good news is, the backlog of pictures is now reduced from over 1200 to only around 550. Here are a few 2009 blooms:

Dan Trimmer's FOX HUNTER. To be honest, this one has never appealed to me ( it was a gift plant) but his year the color was better than it had been in the past 4 years.

GET JIGGY was new this year, and it never was very "jiggy" here. But it is putting up a rebloom scape, so maybe the pattern will be more vivid upon rebloom.

LARRY ALLEN MILLER:

LAUGHING SKIES is a favorite here.Here it is exhibiting a polymerous bloom. This year's rain gave us lots of poly blooms here.

Melanie Mason's MABOU is a great performer here in the Mid- Atlantic too.

As is her MANGO CHUTNEY:

Jane Timmer's little MICRO DOTS has been nothing short of amazing this year. I took the first shot of it June 9th. It is still blooming and has two rebloom scapes that haven't even opened yet.

Only 3 or 4 Munsons remain here, where once there were about 30. MORTICIA remains, as it is a favorite!

This was a gift from Tim Bell last fall. I'm not sure if this is the regular "form" of this plant, or if it just looked like this because it was a new plant. Although I generally avoid anything with cream base and a plum/ purple eye and edge, this one has a different look about it.

A real oldie that has been here for years, and is still a great performer. ORNAMENTAL FOCUS:

SPECIAL CANDY:

SPACECOAST TINY PERFECTION is on this year's Stout Medal list. It is a great performer here:

This is the only Josie Bomar cultivar growing here, but I like the look of it. A bit short, so it is front of the border. This is SWEET AS HONEY.

And finally, WIND MASTER, a bit tailored for my taste, but nice:

Thanks for looking! Season is winding down here - about 20 blooming but some rebloom scapes coming.

Wow, they are looking good. I like Tim Bells gift plant. It has a kind of navy blue look to it. It's different for sure. I have to agree about Fox Hunter. Your pic looks good but I am not crazy about the cv myself. I've had it about 3 years and it hasn't showed me much. Nice pix...thanks for showing them...Ellie

Ellie, Glad to know someone feels the same about FOX HUNTER. The color just seems rather harsh and jarring(IMHO)even though the plant seems to have good habits. And I agree about the Tim Bell plant - the color in the band is just different enough to catch your attention. FOX HUNTER may just be on the way out, although I wonder if it will appeal to anyone. A garden visitor commented this summer that they didn't much like it either!

Just to let you know, the photos above in thumbnails are from Rian's collection. He's some years ahead of me in this effort. Most of my babies (Mesembs, Aloes, Agave, Anacampseros, Avonia, Haworthia, Gasteria are not ready for sale yet, maybe next summer. I've also been propagating from leaves for a few years and have narrowed that down to the more select, less available plants. I've been preparing lots of those for local sale, just to get the ball rolling. Much of what I'm doing is practice and education, preparation for my future plans which I probably shouldn't discuss in this venue. The "Sea of Haworthia" is actually a shipment I received, planted very close together in a shallow tray. I did this only because I hadn't received my plastic pots yet. They plumped up a bit after planting but have only been that way for about 4 months. I'm sure they'll let me know when they want out! The M. crystallinum is one of my favorites.Those droplets are actually water cells that will break if touched. The flower buds have fat cells while the leaves have tiny ones. I got the seeds on Santa Cruz Island last Summer. They grew faster than any other Mesemb I planted. I'll post a link below to my thread from last summer about our island adventure. Thanks! Ngraham - with rain, colors have been deeper and more vivid this year, especially after rain. We had nearly 2" of rain yesterday. So I grabbed the camera - you know bloom season is down and out when you grow 800 + daylilies and you only can find 16 to take pictures of (and some of those were duplicates.) At any rate, here were a few blooms this AM after heavy rain. First, the lovely LOLA BRANHAM, one of my favorites and a perfect example of the twisted cascade form. I have never seen the blooms look so "fat" or such a deep color before. Rain can sometimes have the effect of "fattening up" spiders and UFs. Anyone who can grow dormants and wants a LONG bloomer should look at STELLA'S RUFFLED FINGERS by my friend BJ Crichton. It starts EE and here has put up three sets of rebloom scapes. ( unheard of in this climate!) It is still blooming today and has lots of blooms left. This is a cute little one - great for front of border. Jane Trimmer's MICRO DOTS is another which has put up rebloom scapes. Great little one! HEARTBEAT OF HEAVEN is near the end of bloom, but the color today was darker ( and bloom was huge) after the rain. And a couple I just forgot to post last night. Here's one I can never seem to get a good picture of - Jack Carpenter's ESSENCE OF ROYALTY. And one by Reg.14 hybridizer Jesse George which has been a very reliable performer here. Beautiful flowers all of them. Zeuss sure looks comfy. I've been really behind in my posting on the forum shame on me. It's been a hard weekend for me as I had to put Little Boy to sleep today he had a medical condition called mega colon and after fighting it for eight months the medication stopped working and the only medical options was surgery to remove his colon which would have left him with very little control of his bowels, I just couldn't put him through all of the pain and possible complications. His passing leaves a big empty hole in my heart. He was such a sweet loving little guy who came into my life as a stray I like to think that it was God's way of taking care of such a sweet little soul because he would have died a very slow painful death without treatment, instead he finished out his life being well loved and taken care. I really love the look of English Lavender and it's doing fine now, but last year it didn't bloom and it was late to emerge this year and I thought it was a goner. Every fan has a scape now and the bud count is in the 20s. Michael Miller always seems to look good and hasn't had any hardiness issues, but it also hasn't increased at all in 2 years. Take Me Along is a terrific performer and has tripled the number of fans in 2 years. I love it. Rita, Asiatic Pheasant is fairly new here, but I really like it. It seems to get a bit of a white edge later in the day. It's registered as a midseason bloomer, but so far it's starting late here which I like. Debra, Sundays with Vernon was new last year and it has really impressed me this year. It's a big flower--8 inches-- and the bud count is 18. Cindy, I think you'll really like Guided by Voices once it gets going. I know I do. Val

Gee, Julie only 550 to go :-)) Sorry but that makes me laugh as its a heck of a lot of pictures left.

MABOU and MANGO CHUTNEY both look great. I was especially impressed with both of them this year as well as BORDELLO QUEEN. My favorite of this batch is SWEET AS HONEY, very pretty.

I love that Bell. The contrast in colors is very much to my liking. I also like Fox Hunter. Special Candy and Mabou are looking good, and Sweet as Honey is beautifully detailed. Your phots are lovely as usual. Thanks for posting.

So many pretties I can't decide which I like best. Larry Allen Miller appeals to me, but so does the Bell intro None Like You, and Mabou.

Special Candy is something special alright:) Very nice.

One by Bob Carr that I fell in love with at the 2003 National Convention because of its wonderful substance. Came home, ordered it and still like PRESUMED INNOCENT.
