Hoya Krimson Queen-how much light?

Hi there,

I have a new Hoya carnosa Krimson Queen/Krimson Princess combo in the same pot (I think.) There's a pic on the houseplants forum. My questions are in regards to care: light requirements, watering & any other special care. I want to put it in a South window with all day bright sunlight, but dont know if it will scorch the leaves. I have never grown a Hoya before, but I can see why they are so addicting! : ) Thank you in advance!

Hi there jen! From my old neck of the woods up there in OH...where are you located? I'm from below the Canton/Akron area. My strategy for growing hoyas has changed a bit since I moved down here to the scorching sun of TX. However, when I was in Ohio this is how they were treated: In a south window in winter to maximize light, lighter on the watering in winter but not too dry (can depend on where your thermostat is this winter, cooler = less watering for me), and keep a close eye for mealies. From the other forum I see you already know how to treat those. You'll see soon that everyone grows them a bit differently, and therefore you'll get varying responses. I had a problem in OH one winter where I set the thermostat cooler and watered well before leaving for a week, and when I came back I had rot problems all over. The next winter watered well but kept the thermostat higher and everything was fine. Also I ran a humidifier to help with the dry winter air. In the summer, my hoyas would go out on my north facing front porch, they got a little direct sun early in the morning and late in the afternoon. And I kept them watered regularly out there. I also feed them from spring to fall with a blooming fertilizer plus a drop of superthrive. Hope this helps. I'm sure others will chime in here with their thoughts.

Hi Jen,

I saw yr. pic at the Gallery, looks like a nice spot for it. I'd just watch out abt direct sun in a south window. Probably winter is OK, but Spring/Summer you may want to back it away a bit if it's in very direct light.

I grow mine AROUND west facing windows, that is to say off to the side where they'll get SOME direct afternoon sun.

I've never given mine too much sun, but have seen the effects & they get looking a bit bleached out, more pale looking & less green n color.

I hear, read these are canopy plants growing up into the canopy reaching for the light. Also hear they like dappled light. I'd suggest just experimenting, see how it goes, maybe if it the light gets too direct later in the season you can consider a sheer curtain or blinds.

The dark pink is sooo beautiful!! I love the fact that you can get different colors on the "same" type of plant, it makes it interesting to have more than just one...I have three of the solid green carnosa, all three with different colors, my favorite being my oldest and first hoya, whose flowers are a lavender color. I have 3 of the variegated - not KQ, the other one - and on two the color is pale pink, the third has not bloomed yet but I think it will be a much darker pink according to the person who sent me the cutting. I have heard it depends on the plant's environment, but when all mine are grown under the same exact conditions, they still have the different colors.

Hi and welcome North Dakota, sorry that you contacted our hoya disease and you should also know there is no known cure. Now to your question, the Krimpson Queen and the Krimson Princess are both carnosas and clones of the original carnosa. The queen is the standard varigated version meaning the center of the leaf is green and the edges are cream colored. The princess is the reversed varigated or "rubra" version that has the cream in the center and green edges. You will find that many hoyas and in fact other plants as well have these two variations Original carnosa carnosa "Krimson Queen" Â carmosa "Krimson Princess" The red or pink you find on the leaves will almost always fade to cream as the leaf matures. -LeonÂ Â

Actually, I don't think it's a matter of light. I think 'KP' is an unstable sport of carnosa. I'm sure a botanist could explain why some plants are like this. Have you ever grown a crested Euphorbia trigona or ingens? Sometimes, you'll get a shoot that is perfectly normal growth, which most people promptly chop off. I've had this happen with other crested or monstrose succulents. The variegated forms of carnosa (and other variegates, for that matter) are a sport of the original green form. (Google "sport in botany" for a better explanation that's more technical than my non-science mind can give!) You whack off the "sport" or mutated growth and start a new plant in hopes that it will continue to grow that way. 'KQ' is a very stable sport - I've never seen it have reverted vines. 'KP' on the other hand is not stable and every one I have ever had eventually reverts back to all green. Well, actually, I'm growing one right now and so far, so good. However I will add that it's the first time I've ever grown one in a north window where it gets NO direct sun at all... Another reason I don't think it has much to do with the amount of light... Oh, and GG, I have a massive pot full of green shoots from the 'KPs' I've grown over the years and not one has ever produced variegated growth, so apparently once you sever it from the variegated plant, it will no longer produce variegation! A few pieces look salvageable, but you have to take out everything that's dehydrated and dying. How big is the pot? I would soak the pot for about 2 hours in a sink of tepid water, let it drain, then create a humidity dome. If you have a nursery nearby, you can go buy one. They look like this: They cost about $7 or so for both pieces. Put a little water in the bottom - just enough to cover the bottom, not so much that it comes up over the ridges. Then set this in a bright room, not close enough to a window to get any direct light. Then it's just a matter of waiting to see if it will work. I've seen dehydrated leaves come back and plump up. It can take anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months. All plants have a point of no return, but it never hurts to try as sometimes it isn't as bleak as you think! Once it's revived, grow it in a pot a little bigger than the rootball. Let it dry SLIGHTLY between waterings. This means water it as it approaches dryness, never letting it get bone dry. Water until it comes out of the drainage holes, but don't let it stand in the drainoff. Don't worry about moving them around - a lot of mine are taken down every week to water over the sink, and I'm never concerned about moving one to a new location and exposure. They're tough plants. And they should be grown close to a window, some direct sun is great as long as it's not a south exposure, which is a little intense for them. Denise in Omaha

Thank you both!

I'm in Warren, Ohio, not too far from Akron. I have a strategy about the light: I have blinds on both windows, & I also have a small half sheer curtain I am going to put up in the summer so they dont get fried. I want the best light possible in winter. I have a spot out front in the tree I can put it where it will get morning sun in summer also. I just have to watch carefully about watering.
