squirrels in Xmas cactus

Today, I found out why my Christmas cactus were "shedding" so severely - @#$%*! squirrels! I have the plants on a shelf between two posts of my back fence. Until a few days ago, I had a sunshade made of old sheer curtains tacked above them to keep them from intense sun all day long. But, the season's changing, the fence now provide p.m. sun so I took the curtains down. I never noticed squirels digging in the pots while the curtains were up. My poor little staghorn fern was under there, too.

Will mothballs hold up long enough to make them worth purchasing? Do mothballs really work at keeping the squirrels away? I'm really looking forward to a display of blooms this winter. cora
