Top 10 Best Performers of 2008

Here are my top 10 best performers from this season. My criterion for picking them was that they have grown here for at least two seasons, have decent bud count, have flowers that open well with little or no splotchiness, and that bloom for a long time. These are the cultivars that bounced back well after surviving an extreme drought and put on a spectacular show this summer.

1. ADA MAY MUSICK had one of the better branched scapes in the garden and bloomed for a long time.

2. LAST SNOWFLAKE - Lots of large 7-inch blooms with heavy substance withstood rain, scorching heat and humidity. It was probably my #1 favorite this year.

3. MOZAMBIQUE NIGHTS had a decent bud count and immediate rebloom. Flowers held their color well in full sun.

4. GREEN MYSTIQUE also had terrific rebloom this year.

5. HILLBILLY HEART was the nicest clump in the garden.

6. JULIE NEWMAR had multiple flowers for many weeks.

Gorgeous photos, Debra. Have you ever submitted photos for the Eureka guide? You should!

I'll tag my top 10 along with yours.

1. ODDS AND ENDS: A sleeper the first two years with sparse blooms; this year it exploded.

2. VULCAN LOGIC: I'm cheating here because I haven't had it a full two years, but the bud count was amazing.

3. PLEASE SAY YES: Great color combo, hardly any blotchy flowers, and good bud count.

4. LAKE LURE: Non-stop bloomer.

5. PHOTON TORPEDO: Great bud count, and a late bloomer.

6. ALVATINE TAYLOR YATES: Great bud count, beautiful flower.

7. CLOWN'S CABARET: Perfect blooms every time.

8. SHALLOW WATER: Early bloomer, great color.

9. CHERRY CHAPEAU: Perfect blooms, good bud count.
1. NAVAJO PRINCESS: Earlier bloomer, makes a beautiful clump.
My Honorable Mentions would go to MARMALADE SKIES (longest blooming daylily here), VICTORIAN LACE, GYPSY ROSE LEE, PRIMAL SCREAM, KING'S COTILLION and CARIBBEAN MISTY MARTIN.

Lovely photos! I love your pic of Hillbilly Heart--mine was new to me last fall and only had a couple of blooms, but your photo makes me very anxious to see it next year.

I also love Mozambique Nights.. the coloring is very unique, and reminds me of my Painting the Roses Red which although new to me this year, had to make my top ten because it was so different.

I barged my top ten in on Rita's post earlier.

We had such a crappy spring here with our late snows and way below average temps, I didn't have as many blooms as normal. Coral Sunset still performed perfectly, though. First year for Itoh blooms in my garden. I thought Singing in the Rain would be a favorite but I think I like Strawberry Blonde better--it's a fuller flower and the yellow is very pretty. Raspberry Rumba is a new favorite and the blooms of Louise Marx were truly beautiful and HUGE! Last one is (I think!) Mrs F D Roosevelt. This one didn't have a tag but I'm at least 80% sure is Mrs FDR! I normally don't like floppy doubles that much but that one is worth the effort of staking....

I know appliances today aren't made like they used to be. But it makes me wonder why? I mean, there was competition even back then! All those name brands even then were competing with each other. Why would the appliance manufacturer NOT want an early fail back then so the consumer would have to go out and purchase a new appliance? Surely they realized that by making a product to last 20 plus years that they would lose all those customers for the many years their appliance continued to work. I have a four year old Whirlpool DW and I was reading the manual because the rinse aid dispenser was leaking from the cap.......I started looking at the warranty and was surprised to see a couple of things. It has a ONE YEAR full warranty Second year limited warranty on "wash module" "In the 2nd year from the date of purchase, when this dishwasher is operated and maintained according to instructions attached to or furnished with the product. Whirlpool Corporation will pay for FSP replacement parts for any part of the wash module if defective in materials or workmanship" 2nd through 5th year limited warrant on electronic control system and nylon-coated dishracks "In the 2nd through the 5th years from the date of purchase, when this dishwasher is operated and maintained according to instructions attached to or furnished with this product, Whirlpool will pay for the FSP replacement parts for the following components if defective in materials or workmanship: the electronic control system, the upper and lower dishracks (for models with nylon-coated dish racks)" Twenty year warranty on tub and inner door should it fail to contain water, if defective in materials or workmanship. Best hood (1000 cfm int. blower) - noise and performance?

Your concern with noise level should also focus as much on duct size as you are on sones. What size duct will you have from your hood to the outside? You could buy the quietest hood in the universe, and it will still be noisy if your duct diameter is too small for it. The hoods you are considering say in their specs what size duct they need. Typically for a hood with 600 cfms or more, you need an 8" or 10" duct. For example, the Best by Broan you mentioned specifies an 8" duct. If your duct diameter is smaller than what is specified, you will get a lot of noise through no fault of the hood, as too much air is being pushed through too small of a space. If your kitchen's duct diameter is say, 6", and you cannot switch it out (you said your kitchen is 90% finished), then you will have to lower your expectations for cfms. There are some hoods available that are spec'd for 6" ducts, but not with the 1000 cfms you've mentioned. If you already have an 8" or 10" duct, then your options for a quiet powerful hood are excellent. That Best by Broan hood you cited goes for about $2800. At that price, it should have baffle filters, but instead it has the less expensive mesh filters. I like the Kobe RA02 hood you mentioned which has baffle filters, and costs much less than the Broan. Whether you like Ventahood/VAH or not seems less dependent on its exhaust abilities, and more dependent on whether you like the method for cleaning it versus cleaning a baffle-filter hood. There are people who are strongly pro or con the VAH-cleaning method, so you should go to a store where they have them on display to see for yourself. I keep a reading journal and it has a place to rate your reads on a scale of 1-10. So, I'll list the books I read this year according to how I rated them. (I know this message is way too long, but hey--I hardly ever get a chance to post, horrible lurker that I am, so a once-a-year overly long posting isn't too horrible, right?) 10-Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey Sentimental 10 rating--remember reading it as a child and it held up. Good fun. 10-Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell What a mind-blowing book with so many layers and connections. LOVED IT! 10-Gilead by Marilynne Robinson Such a beautiful and contemplative book that examines aging, new life, regrets, families, grudges, grace and God. Particularly loved how the main character finds beauty in sunlight catching a sprinkler's spray or birds roosting on a phone wire (two things that would have been impossible to see in the 1800s). 10-Gonzalez and Daughter Trucking Company: A Road Novel with Literary License by Maria Amparo Escandon This is the "One City, One Book" pick for 2009 in our town. It is such a page-turner! The main character is in a women's prison in Mexico for a crime that remains a mystery for most of the book. She starts a reading group for the inmates, only she doesn't actually read the text, rather tells her story. 10-I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith This book has been mentioned time and again on this forum and I finally got around to reading it this year--THANK YOU to whoever recommended it. I loved it so much! 10-There is Room for You by Charlotte Bacon Such beautiful descriptions of India, both in the 40s and the 90s. Loved the two intertwining narratives of mother and daughter, both outsiders in India but at two different times. A very lush book. 10-The Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys I'm sure everyone in the world had read this but me. Written in the 1960s, it imagines the story of Mrs. Rochester (Mr. Rochester's crazy wife that he kept locked in the attic in Jane Eyre.) It was hard to read and I gave it a 10 not because I loved it, but because it did perfectly what it meant to do. It said so much about patriarchy, post-colonialism, feminism, and madness in ways I'd never thought of. I need to re-read. 10-The Woman I Kept to Myself by Julia Alvarez This book of poems was so great that I am going to buy the book. There's one poem in the particular about how she can tell who her husband is talking to on the phone by the tone of his voice. Another one talks about how she can't bear to throw out her headbands, even though she has short hair now, because they are such a symbol of her girlhood. You have to read these poems out loud so that you can hear the sound of them. 9-Five Skies by Ron Carlson Loved this book! Three men out on the plains building stuff and eating really good food. Your Top 10 are really gorgeous. I only have two of those -ODDS AND ENDS, which bloomed very well here this year, and CLOWNS CABARET, which seemed to be set back by last year's drought. I've never submitted photos for the EUREKA guide. I don't save my pics in high enough resolution for print. Also, you have to pay a fee for them to consider putting the photos in EUREKA. As a former journalist, that rubs me the wrong way. It seems they should pay the photographers for using the photos, and not the other way around. I have a good friend who has had several of hers published in EUREKA.

Julie - I hope HILLBILLY HEART does well for you. It's been on my TOP 10 list for two years now.

We're almost even, Debra. The only one you have pictured that I grow is Hillbilly Heart, but I have Last Snowflake on my list, and Eye on a String might just make the cut, too. Your photo of Ada May Musick is beautiful, but I just don't have very good luck with some of the Lambertson cultivars.

I understand what you mean about the Eureka submission guidelines. I guess the only time it might make sense to pay the fee is if you're a daylily seller who might get some business out of the photo publication.

I was so glad to see Please Say Yes on the list. I fell in love with the one Rick posted, and ordered it. It's in my Marietta order.

You had so many I loved...I guess the list keeps growing. thank you for posting these lovely flowers.

Chris - About 100 best performers, I really only had about 30-40 best performers this year. The others were knocked back very badly by the drought and had pitiful bud counts.

Anybody else want to share their top 10 best performers?

Tom - Thanks for sharing your top performers! Prickled Petals and Time Lord did well here too. El Desperado was suffering after effects from the drought. Indian Ripple is one I would like to add.

Everyones top ten are stunners plus of course the fact that they do well in the garden. I see that most people are using do well in the garden for picks. Me, I just went with stunning for this year as my newer daylilies, which is 90 percent at least of them, have not been around to get judged by garden performance.

Most of the flowers on peoples lists I don't even have. I do have JULIE NEWMAR from Debra's list but there was nothing totally outstandsing about it this year. I also have EL DESPERADO, on Tom's list. That one I loved and did very well for me. I think once it settles in it will always be a top ten on garden preformance. I don't have anything from Chris's list. My should have been NAVAJO PRINCESS turned out to be something else and ugly so it was dug out and tossed. I do always love the pictures I see of the real thing.

This is a great thread, there must be many more of us here that can add their personal top ten. I always love to see the pictures also!!

Not just money but lots of work making new beds and planting. Sure is all worth it when you see them bloom.

I see lots of people talk about downsizing (although they don't seem to quite manage to do so) and here I am expanding until I have no more room. And its not as if I am getting any younger. I do notice that it takes me longer and gets harder to accomplish the same amount of work than it did only 5 years ago.

Hi Rita,
Well I've been outside and I have a new bed well under way. It should be ready to plant tomorrow. It is totally necessary because I might possibly have placed another order today, and I need somewhere to start tucking these babies.

I will turn in soon, because I worked last night and have not been to bed yet. I am quite tired, but a few extra hours sleep tonight, and I'll be ready to finish up that bed tomorrow.

maximus, why do think the Lambertsons don't do well for you? Is it your zone or are the Lambertsons just unpredictable overall?

Last Snowflake vs. Green Mystique...I love them both & see you favored LS over GM. I read your favored reviews on LS & you didn't favor GM because it did't stand up to weather well?

I've been shopping around for Julie Newmar & she is still kind of expensive considering she is an older cultivar. She has got to be fantastic if she is still carrying a high $ tag.

I really like Navajo Princess too. It's that crazy eyezone that you don't see often. I just found out Malachite Prism doesn't work in my zone otherwise I'd be getting that 1 too. Rita, why do you think she didn't work out for you?

Is Prickled Petals really that purple? I've looked that 1 up on Tinkers several times & in those pics it looks more pink.

Sanford Intermezzo is absolutely stunning! When that bugger comes down in price a bit, I'm all over it!

Ok, I butted in on Rita's post with my top ten list, but didn't include photos, so figured it would be ok to post it again with pics. Best performers for me this year:

YAZOO ELSIE HINTSON--Awesome in height, flower size, and beautiful blooms!

GIFT FROM HEAVEN was stunning in all of it's faces.

MASK OF ETERNITY was consistantly full of blooms.

CHERRY EYED PUMPKIN--A long bloomer and full of blossoms.

BLACK PLUSH -- An oldie, but the picture says it all!

FORBIDDEN DREAMS -- A hard one to get a true picture of, and it was my chameleon this year as it had and ever changing face, but was full of beautiful flowers.

PRICKLED PETALS -- Mine doesn't have as much color as the warmer areas do, but it is and absolutely lovely flower and agressive bloomer.

OUTRAGEOUS -- Very true to it's name. I liked it so much that I bought a second plant as I didn't want to wait until the first one was large enough to divide.

SWIRLING SPIDER -- Until this year, this was the only DL that had ever rebloomed for me. It is one of my first to start, and doesn't take a break before it starts rebloom. Huge flower, and full of blooms.

TUSCAWILLA TIGRESS -- She is everything that a perfect daylily should be... Big, bold, and full of blooms. I would never be without this one!

It is great to see people's lists with plants that do well rather than just a pretty flower. I love my pretty singles, but would rather have a non-stop clump any time!

I didn't notice Mountain Shadows Nursery on your pics before, most likely due to staring at the flowers instead of the words! I just googled you, how fun! I would love to do what you are doing! Maybe 1 day...

Lalaland, I'm not sure why the Lambertson cultivars don't fare well here. I have a few that do fine, but the majority of them don't. Most of the ones I want are too expensive for me to take the chance on adding them here.

Navajo Princess is one of those Hansen cultivars that's not supposed to do very well in the North. It took a while to increase, but it's holding its own now.

Lalaland - Last Snowflake and Green Mystique are both excellent cultivars. In fact, Green Mystique is one of Last Snowflake's parents. I like Last Snowflake better because it is larger, whiter, and is a late season rebloomer. Last Snowflake's blooms are 6.5-7 inches, while Green Mystique's are 5.5-6 inches. The substance of Last Snowflake's blooms are thicker and do withstand rain, heat and humidity a tad better. Here are a couple more photos of the two.

Not your fault by any means maximus, but I should have asked this ? sooner & now it's too late. I've been on the LA all weekend & pretty much ruined my labor day weekend...inside! I ended up winning 2 of the '08 intros. I know, I know, but I couldn't help myself! Someone needs to take this computer away from me. I don't know if you remember my post asking all my newbie ?'s or not, but you all gave me EXCELLENT advice on what I should be buying for my zone & so I knew better, but something inside goes maybe it could work here! I'll test it! It's a bummer to hear they don't do great this far north. I blame most of this on Tragar's seedlings that I've seen on this site. He's the 1 I actually bought them from. Thank you for bringing me back to rationality!

If Navajo Princess works for you, it should work for me too. I can wait for it to increase as long as it lives! I'm listed as z5b & live in the city surrounded by a lot of buildings. I feel I live in a pretty good microclimate to push me into z6 with all this concrete to heat things up. I'm also .5 miles from the lake which is suppose to moderate our winters. See how I keep convincing myself?

So now I'm starting to wonder about GM & LS! I just bought a Stamile (Spiny Sea Urchin - if you saw that post), & so far reports say it's hardy here. After Debra's post, I would definitely get LS. I much prefer heavier substance flowers. I did get Lime Frost from a local nursery this year & had a chance to see 1 bloom & I didn't like it because it looked so papery thin. I really am in the market for several heavy substance lime green/white flowered dls, any suggestions? Or do you think LS would work for me?

I really like PP too...once again not sure if that 1 would work either.

I think I need to delete everyone of my dl listings in my favorites except for the Korths!

Lalaland - Some of the Lambertsons do well in the north. I me Ludlow last year, and he told me Ada May Musick and Awesome Artist are two that really flourish in the north. Tragar is in Oregon. You might ask him how those you are buying have overwintered for him. Edward on this forum is in Canada and is growing Last Snowflake. Most of the Stamiles are pretty hardy because they have some dormant parents in the background.

Tom- I always love your pictures but especially love the one of Prickled Petals.

lalalandwi - My NAVAJO PRINCESS was not really NAVAJO PRINCESS in spite of the fact that it was sold that way. As my imposter started flowering, I kept wondering why it didn't look right. Posted many pictures on the forum and everyone told me that was NOT NAVAJO PRINCESS. As the flowers on mine were awefully ugly, I dug it out and trashed it.

Also, I can not tell you which would be hardy in your zone because I don't know but remember, you will not get the branching and budcounts up there listed on those Florida southern belles so take that into consideration. Your safe with northern hybridizers.

Also see my picture of GIFT FROM HEAVEN in the other top picks post. It looks quite different here than it does out west.

Debra, you are quite the enabler!!! I am VERY happy to hear about the Lambertsons! I haven't found Ada May Musick for sale yet. I'm keeping my eye open. I did have a bid on Awesome Artist that I lost on. It was for a single fan & it went up too high knowing I could get a double fan for just a few dollars more. I'll keep my eye out for that 1 again.

After hearing about how the weather is out in Tragar's neck of the woods, it gave me more confidence to try them out. I've emailed him several times last night to let him know about my intentions with the other bids & waiting to hear back from him on his choice of payment method. Assuming he is doing some Labor Day activities I might not hear from him until tomorrow. I am dying to talk to him. I really want to start seedlings on my own & would like some advice. Tobin, the other poster from WI, said he is starting to get into doing that as well. Since he is so close I emailed him to ask if he could show me what to do next summer.

I LOVE to hear that about the Stamiles as well! I really try very hard not to look at the pics of the 1's that are not hardy here. But when you see a pretty dl & keep getting drawn to them, it is usually Morss, Stamile or Lambertson that gets me every time. I really love Rita's mentality about all this & wish I could sway my vision in her direction. Her turning me on to the Korth's intros is really helping. They do have a lot of gorgeous dls that look like they have been bred from the south. Amazing! I wish I would have found out about them during peak blooming season. I would have driven right up there. Tears For Gus was just auctioned off on the LA with 17 bids!

Off to see if I can find Last Snowflake!

Lalaland, don't forget to look at the intros of Curt Hanson (Cleveland, Ohio hybridizer). His cultivars are the ones that show the most consistent performance for me -- and they're beautiful, to boot.

lalalandwi - Its getting late in the year and I know its hard to wait but if you have gotten or ordered a bunch of evergreens already then it might be a good idea to see how they overwinter for you and what happens next bloom season. I would never say do not get any of those lovely southern belles, just to be cautious and informed.

When I got the daylily crazies last year I bought lots and lots of evergreens and semi evergreens. After the fact I heard everything from they will all die over the winter to pay no attention to evergreen or not, just buy what you want and they will be fine. Well neither is totally true, thank goodness. Nothing died over the winter, but some struggled and couldn't make anything of themselves. Most did exceptionally well.

But that was only part of the story. Just because it came up didn't mean your out of the woods. Do you want rebloom? Those florida "rebloomers" are not going to rebloom up north. How much do you want that stunning flower? What if it has issues and can't open properly? What about budcounts? I have budcounts of 5-6 on some of my southern evergreens. Not enough flowers to justify garden space. Normal budcounts this first year on the southern evergreens in my garden was in the 9-19 bud range. So its a lot to consider.

I hope I have this right Crintonic Gardens? What's up with all the Hansons? That has confused me since day 1 & now will have that locked in my ol' brain forever now. Curt Hanson is the 1 I want. Holy toledo! I just got done looking at C. Hanson's intros & instantly found @ 10 I would buy instantly. Too bad I can't afford much more at this point. I did read a post here on a lady that was going to that nursery & it should have registered, but it didn't.

My taste seems to be just a bit different than most here, so I won't bore you with the 1's I like. But I do have to ask what the terminology is for the look of the '08 intro Catch A Wave. Reading the description on their PDF file is really blurry & can't make it out. I really like the look of the reversed pinch?

Rita, there is no offese taken on any advice you have ever given me & I really appreciate your help. Everything you say makes perfect sense to me. I personally would go for all dormants if I could. I'm not real wild on looking at ratty foliage come spring. It seems that it might be something I need to tolerate until the season gets going. I am definitely taking your advice & only buying 2 more for the year. I really am anxious to see how these all pan out next spring to see if I can deal with the evergreens.

As far as the bud count goes, I plan on potting them instead of growing them in the ground. Hopefully that will make some difference. This is the 1st situation EVER that I am willing to pamper something & overwinter it.

Oh, boy. I don't know about overwintering in pots in your zone. They just might all die on you. Someone closer needs to speak up here.

Once up in the spring the budcount is not going to be helped (nor hurt) by growing in a pot.

I would be a little leary about overwintering in pots. People in more southern climates have experienced some trouble with that, and it would make me more nervous the further north you go. I'd say if you have room to plant them directly in the ground, that would be safest.

Yes, Curt Hanson (with an "O") is the hybridizer who breeds northern-hardy daylilies. Dan Hansen is a southern hybridizer. That's not to say none of the Hansen intros would fare well up north. I think he's supposed to be very forthright about how his cultivars fare in different climates.

I have over 100 of Hanson's intros, with plans to add about another 50. I can certainly understand why they appeal to you! I love the unusual forms of many of his intros.

Oh, I wasn't planning on leaving the pots outside over winter. I was planning on putting them in my unheated basement. The temps usually drop to about mid 40's at the VERY least. Would that be OK? I know trees & shrubs can tolerate root temps to 34F without issue. Not sure about dls. I believe it will be cold enough for them to go dormant. If it will be better to put them in the ground, I will definitely do that instead.

Maximus, you just made it easier for me to remember with the O. I am going to plan a trip to his gardens next summer. There is an arboretum out that way I've been dying to see as well. Will save up lots of $ before I go. You like the crazy forms too, huh? They are just something different & I'm all about different.

Lalaland - Are you talking about potting them and growing inside a garage or basement? They most likely will not survive outside in a pot in your climate.

For me, its very difficult to do a top ten best performers list. Half my daylilies were put in this spring, the others mostly all last year. That leaves about 10 percent of my daylilies that have been here for muliple years. Not much to choose from based on long range performance.
