What is your favorite place to buy seeds?

And, is there any specific reason it's your favorite?

I'm ready to order my very first seeds (or seedlings) and I'm interesting in going with what the pro's know.

For tomato hybrid seeds I like tomatogrowers.com in Ft. Myers.
For tomato heirloom types I like Garden Web traders.
Your trade page didn't list any seeds you are looking for.
I have found it useful to list things there unless you want to start out with store-bought and there's nothing wrong with that.

Burpee, Swallowtail, T&M and Seeds Trust. Also American Meadows, but the last mix I planted either had too much grass seed or it was in the soil. I like their regular forget-me-not (very tidy), got a ton of the chinese ones in a 1/4# bag. They do self seed and could become a problem. I saved some alyssum and marigolds I especially liked, marigold were spectacular the first year of saving, but subsequent years they have gone downhill, alyssum doesn't seem as robust, collected those from one plant that self-seeded and was great. I also got some on ebay but don't think I will any more unlees I can't find them anywhere else and willing to gamble. Also some exotic ones from somewhere that once I got them and saw how you have to baby them, didn't want to bother. I've never traded yet partly because I'm afraid they won't bloom true and partly because I'm not sure they are what I want and probably don't have any people would want to trade for.

How about posting a WANTED on the Exchange pages or populating your Trade Page? I have been very pleased with the responses for trading what I have extra for something another GW member has that I would like. However, I buy most of the common veggie seeds in bulk at the Southern States Ag Supply or the small farmer's seed store in Louisburg. Special veggie seeds and some flower seeds I buy from Territorial Seed, Pinetree Seeds, Johnny's Seeds, Totally Tomatoes, and Vermont Bean Seed (Seymour's). I do compare quantity to price for the same type (amazing when you do that - some places charge 3 times more for one thing and half as much for others comparatively). I mostly like trading seeds with GW members - a LOT - because for the really special ones, a half-dozen seeds fills the bill instead of a whole huge bed of one thing, or worse yet, unused seed! I'll bet you'd get a lot of responses if you offered a cutting of one of your roses for some seeds - for what it would cost you for a padded envelope and one or two stamps you might get a whole lot of traders with a whole lot of seeds. Wynne's Dahlias-- they're great!! Wonderful people who introduce dahlias. They grow about 7,000 plants & bring out new ones every year. You can get to their albums by clicking on View our Picture Gallery - or get the price list or order form by clicking on either of them. Sue: Rather than looking for one place, I took a different tack and looked for specific roses wherever I went. Example: Most Rugosas will do well in Z5, as will most any own-root roses. How can you tell if you don't know? Look for a graft at the base of the plant -- own roots won't have a graft "ball" and will probably do well. Secondly, know that there Are things you can do to help not-so-hardy roses stay hardy in your area. Look for microclimates in your yard that could handle an iffy plant or two. Climbers, particularly. Plant deep -- no sign of the graft should appear above ground. And finally, "local" has become such a misnomer of late. There are very few retail nurseries that actually grow or graft their own roses, or anything else for that matter. Chances are that they got their roses from the very places one can order through on-line. Don't sacrifice quality for keeping the dollars in town. There's plenty of ways to do that, and roses aren't one of them. That said, there's nothing wrong with hitting the $5 table at Ocean State Job Lot for some Hybrid Teas that you know won't make it :-) If you feel like traveling at all, in East Windsor, CT on Route 140 just off Route 91, Revay's still does a lot of their own roses and sells only things that will be hardy to Zone 5. Thanks for your replies.

I don't have anything on my trade page because I have nothing to trade, and I didn't mean for my post to turn into a way of asking for seeds. I feel bad/weird about asking for seeds.

I'll just have to check out those sites! I'm getting excited!

listing seeds you are looking for isn't the same as asking for seeds, it's just what you are looking for. I have been the recipient of many generous people who sent them for self-addressed stamped envelope (sase) or sasbe (bubble-envelope).
If I saw seeds on your "want" list that I had extra of I would gladly offer them because like a lot of people I end up with more seeds than I can use before they expire in age(small garden).
Of course once you buy just a few seed packets then you will have seeds to list for trade. I would say that 1/2 my seeds go out sase and 1/2 in trades.
I am rich in tomato seeds (if that's something you are looking for).Let me know.

for veg: southern exposure seed exchange & pinetree.

for flowers: swallowtail garden seeds & thompson and morgan.

and naplesgardener is right -- the BEST place to get 'em is where they're free & proven -- here on GW.

Gardenweb is the best place to get seeds. Next to nothing. : )

ECHO is great for seeds for tropical areas. I have extra yard long beans and okra if anyone is interested.

So how, besides buying seeds, would one get seeds to trade with others? For example, if I can get some heirloom tomato seeds, then grow heirloom tomatoes, can I dry out & re-use the seeds from these tomatoes? Or does it not work like that? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question; science was never my strong suit.

Also, for those of you trading, do you trade here on the Florida board, or do you use a general Garden Web trading board?

Hi Heather here's my 2 cents...

A: Yes. That's how you do it. Very simple.

Q: do you trade here on the Florida board, or do you use a general Garden Web trading board?
A: I've done both. Trades as well as gifts from generous GW'ers from several areas (Florida forum, Seed Exchange and Tomato Exchange/Tomato Forum).
A couple times a year the Seed Exchange has a "newbie" offer that give free seeds to newbies from other GW'ers.

Another way to get started is to buy one kind of seed that is uncommon and desirable so you have something to offer and ask for trades. You'll get lots of different stuff to grow or trade for more stuff. It's a little addictive and fun to get stuff in the mail. (I've had to explain to my mailman what's in my mail).

I don't see anything on your "want" list. Surely you want some seeds....

I have so many, but stokes is way up there, also hps and parks , also pinetree. there all good really chiltern in England to .
