Rare Hoya Compacta??

This is a neat looking Compacta, I ran across on eBay. Has anyone else ever saw variety?

I have one! Well....I lost all but one strand I have managed to bring back from near death! This is a nice one I call mine tri color. I may be wrong on that, I like all of the Ropes, they are so neat in shape.

Wildcat-- your plant looks wonderful! I'm real pleased that mine's up to about a dozen inflorescences or bud clusters, but yours is amazing! As to the compacta vs. 'Kinkle 8' issue, I suspect that cultural conditions may affect how tightly contorted compacta's leaves grow. I'll link a shot of a portion of one vine on my plant. At the top, there are leaves that twist and fold over on themselves, typical of compacta. Further down, the leaves straighten out and look very much like Krinkle 8, but down a little further yet they become more contorted again (getting out of the shot, but you can see the one cut off at the bottom is more in-folded.) Looking at Wildcat's plant's leaves I see the same sort of thing-- vines with leaves more contorted at certain levels (the base and the tips of her plant) and flatter but dimpled at other levels (toward the center of each vine.) I think it might be a reaction to periods of faster (more light, heat, moisture) and slower (winter) growth. Here is a link that might be useful: H. compacta vine

I live in Northern Illinois and it’s cold and grey. My compacta sends out new shoots from the base. I fertilize my plants pretty much whenever I water them with half strength fertilizer. (Though I don’t fertilize stressed plants)I also flush out my plants once in a while to avoid the collection of salts. I do let it dry out pretty well, especially coming into winter. Good luck!

This is happening to my hoya compacta lately as well, I keep most of my house plants outside for the summer and I think mine got a little too much water and a little too much sun. Try watering less, or make a well-draining soil mix with perlite, leca, orchid bark, and potting mix! Hoyas can be very dramatic and picky with their placement, try moving it a little more of a shaded spot, where it gets more indirect light than direct. Hope this helps! Good luck!

ALH, ask where you acquired yours? I would love to get one like this, but I'm really debating on whether to order this time of year! I'm afraid this eBay person may not have many of them! So I want to get an more places to get one when it's warm enough to ship! Thanks!

I believe this is a reputable vendor on eBay. I've never ordered from him, but have seen positive comments here on the forum. He should be well experienced to pack that baby up nicely so it should arrive in good shape. Tough time of year to be accepting plant material, but he offers heat packs for $3. Those I have had good experience with.

If the price stays within your budget, I say, go for it. It really is a nice plant, though I don't think it's super rare.

I really would LOVE to have this Hoya. I was just always afraid to order during winter as I've never used the heat packs. I really appreciate your input, it has helped me make my decision to bid. This is a very reputable dealer, he says in listing "seldom- if ever listed". Don't know if I'll win, but I sure hope!!! It will make a nice Valentines present (;
