Tis a most exciting thing! I really enjoy it when I find a hosta comning up that I had forgotten or didn't have much hope for. Those little pips can take away winters depression very quickly! I love looking for sports when they first leaf out too.

I remember 20 years ago when I moved here. I would see people in their yards down in Canoe, bent over, looking at the newly bare ground with a big smile on their faces. That's a gardener!

It is not only the hostas, they will be preceded by crocuses and other spring flowers. Then there is nice sunshine and warmth when working outside to straighten up the whole outdoor place, putting fresh mulch on all the beds.

There will be a lot of satisfaction in a few weeks. Yes, and then there are new projects to implement, i.e getting rid of some 30 year old large junipers, replacing them with conifers which will not grow as big in same number of years!

And later my grandson and I will start up 'his' vegetable garden!

My husband and I always try to be the first to see the crocus come up, the first robin to appear, and also the first hummer. . the ole boy is getting down right good at it, too. He was a city slicker and me a country bumpkin. . lol
Paul, my very favorite time of the year is spring. . I love the smell, the layers of clothes I have to peal off from morning to afternoon while working, watching the birds claim their territory while I mulch and clean up. . I love everything about spring. . .oohhh, now you got me anxious. . .lol

Oh, I can't wait!

I was so excited a couple of days ago when I got up around 5:30 a.m. and heard the first cardinal boy singing romance songs! It's a long slog until Spring here, but at least I can hear it long before I see it and smell it.

It's snowing lightly here today, but I saw our first sign of spring last night. A skunk! He was munching on sunflower seeds that fall from the birdfeeder.

Yeah,its coming! I finally got out yesterday and cleared out a ton of Oak leaves from my garden path,and in front of the house. The birds know,too. They are out singing in the morning! Phil

Hi Phil!! Thank you for checking up on me! I'm fine, just incredibly stretched in so many directions,
as usual--all good but just too little of *me* for all I'm inclined to try and do and try to be!

I came home, around 2:30 today and sat in my car in the driveway just thinking and I heard a Robin and a Cardinal singing their hearts out!
My heart lept--I love the sounds of Spring though it is most likely a good 8 wks out here! I can do 8 weeks! We have lots of snow, which I love,
too but I will be so happy to see my hosta pushing up, especially in the new beds and plantings from last Fall!!

It does make my heart skip, to think about it!!

I just hope most of mine come up. With the fall being so weird and now spring being just as weird I am worried a lot of them won't come up.

Alycia - how can you say it's a weird spring in zone 3/4?

That is what I am afraid of. This year it seems to be very weird, it has been 35-40 for the last week and it looks like we are going to get another week of 40's. We had plenty of snow but it has already melted mostly away usually we still have 10' drifts and it is supposed to be -15 to maybe 10 degrees F max not 40! our drifts are down to maybe 3-5' I just hope it doesn't get too cold because a few of my heucheras, my Jack frost and some thyme that was just planted last year are now uncovered, half in mud half frozen.

Perennials have the will to live. They will be fine. We have 12"+ on the ground right now and a blizzard on the way.
If I took a shovel to it right now, I would see the spring bulbs are up an inch or two and the bee balm is green and spreading, and the sedums are sprouting.

I splurged and bought 24 new hostas last year, so I am very much anticipating their first spring in my garden.
Of course the snow forecast for Ohio for the rest of the week is 3 to 6+ inches, lol.

Don't feel bad Nutmeg,we are still getting snow down here in western NC! This may go down as the winter that will never end. Phil

thank you both that does make me feel a little better. I think where I planted sooo many plants last year and it is the first spring with hostas coming in that I just hope I don't lose a lot.

It's still a long way to go until anything start coming up here but I can't wait. This winter was way to hectic here in the office (Welfare) so I can't relax like when walking out in the Garden. There is a 4 verse poem that I read in a magazine that was written by some lady in Texas and the first two lines are "My garden is a peaceful place, where I can go and slow my pace".
