Dead tips on tree branches?

My Laural oaks, (quite large) have a lot of dead foilage on the tips of twigs. I know that can be normal on maples but I don't recall it on my oaks before. Any ideas.

I would guess at lack of rain. Most of my trees and shrubs look very stressed due to lack of rain. There is a lot of die back on them all.

I have lost several mature Laurel oaks and I understand your nervousness.You should go out and observe the tree.Look at it like you never looked before. Bark,roots color.Laurels are picky and short lived.They hate droughts,they hate wet feet and they hate any root disturbance. Digging or leaving heavy equipment beneath them can send them into distress as well as age can . Once in distress a signal goes out and insect attact can occur. This distress is often a slow process so it could be something that happened 6 months to a year ago.Please look up Laurel Wilt and Hypoxylon Oak Canker just to be on the safe side.
I think we all need to be checking our plants daily and looking for early signs of disease and insects. Remember that they do not live forever!Good Luck.

Hello albertkao, in general I would say make a proper pruning cut about an inch off the trunk. Since nothing needs done immediately I may as well ask a few questions. It seems a stretch to imagine why we would not want to trim that dead branch off though unless you see buds forming or opening on it. I tried to zoom in on the first picture and it looks like the branch has been dead for some time. Is that correct? When was it planted? What type of tree is it and what is the white stuff around the bottom? Any reason you can think of for why the branch is dead? Drought?

We are in the same position. Our fig tree was about 20 feet high and just as wide until this past winter killed most of it. The main trunk started generation shoots so we cut the trunk back to where the shoots are and cut all of the other bare dead trunks down to the ground. We left a few of the larger shoots coming out of the base and cut off the rest of the suckers. We figure we will see what starts to take off while trimming out the new suckers over the summer. Hopefully we will get figs next year.

Thanks for your help/comments. I did have the lawn treated with weedkilling herbicide and fed with a granular fertilizer earlier in the year by Greenthumb, a well know lawn maintenance company here in the UK. I was wondering myself whether they sprayed too near the tree as the grassed area probably goes over the top of the tree's roots. However, the same treatment was done last year and the tree looked a whole lot healthier, so it could be the dry Spring and Summer. That said, the tree now looks almost like it is wilting all the time. I have fed it recently with some plant food and that doesn't seem to have improved the situation. I took off the bad branch (sawed it off) and the wood looks in good clean condition. All light beige/brown colour, no signs of disease.
