I don't know if a trellis or something technically makes the leaves grow bigger, but my MacG was reaching out and the leaves on that vine weren't growing until I let it latch onto the Burro's Tail. The leaves between the main plant and the BT are tiny, hardly formed, but the ones on and above the BT are large. Maybe someone can explain this phenomonon. I also have an australis that I was trying to keep "tidy" by snipping the top growth so it would get fatter rather than taller. I gave up - it was growing up faster than I could snip. So I put a trellis behind it and it's gone bonkers and will probably have the trellis covered by fall. I'm not a big fan of trellises - I love the way they look, but they're hard to clean behind and you can't turn the plant for even growth. But sometimes, you just have to give in to what the plant wants! Denise in Omaha
