Here's the definition as per the "hosta definitions" at "the" Hosta Library:

glaucous:
having a waxy coating (or bloom) producing a white to blue coloring over the plant parts.

That's what makes "Blue Angel" blue! :O)

simply put ... ITS WHITE UNDERNEATH ....

IMHO ... one of the most useless characteristics in a hosta... unless you happen to get so drunk .. that you view your hosta from underneath ... just prior to passing out..... rather than from the top or side as the rest of us do .....

a decade back .... all the breeders were excited about putting white backs onto hosta ... big deal ...

the only place it might be interesting... is if you had a true vase shaped clump .... and the backs actually showed .... without the alcohol ... lol

Actually, the term for the leaves being white underneath seems to be "white-backed
having a glaucous underside; i.e., H. hypoleuca." according to "the Library's" dictionary!

I'm a little confused by the description of the plant you have linked, "lykaon":

"blue green leaves with a glaucous bloom on the underside of the leaf."

Okay--I think I've sorted it out, finally, by looking at the "glaucous" definition and then the "bloom" definition, as well:

bloom
1. flower. 2. waxy coating on a leaf, stem, or pod surface producing a dusty appearance.

I couldn't figure out how you'd have a "bloom/blossom" on the underside of a leaf! Now, I understand the terminolgy better,
having explored further!

I thought I'd show you,first, my lack of knowledge on the subject, and then my effort to understand it better. BLUSH!

uhhh, it has ocurred to me, that perhaps my comment about my father's proverb may have been thought
to be aimed at others!!! It was not!! It was all about me opening my mouth and admitting my confusion
about the definition! Gulp!
