Strange happenings with lemon eucalyptus

I have owned a lemon eucalyptus plant for about 8 years. Over the years it has grown tall and scraggly and has leaves and branches that are hairy. this past summer I transplanted it to a larger pot and when I brought it in for the winter I noticed that one branch of its new growth has a different type of branch and leaf. Although the shape of the leaf and the branch is the same, this particular branch sprouts smooth and waxy leaves as opposed to hairy leaves and branches. I am baffled as to why this happened. Any ideas?
